What happens if they don't get a vaccine

Will this be the new life forever? Is it ever going to end Sad

OP posts:
Missandra · 15/10/2020 16:18

I honestly don’t know. We can’t carry on like this forever.

Funkypolar · 15/10/2020 16:22

People aren’t going to comply with never seeing family again.

fuckrightoff · 15/10/2020 16:26

It's so depressing with no end in sight especially with Christmas coming, I just want to know even a rough timescale but can't find anything

OP posts:
musicalfrog · 15/10/2020 16:28

More worrying, how long will they wait before deciding there won't actually be one?

YellowishZebra · 15/10/2020 16:31

I honestly think vaccine or no vaccine,
Social distancing with those outside you household will be here forever.
Mandatory masks indoors in public will be here forever.
But within 6-9 months we will be able to gather in unlimited numbers as long as social distancing is adhered to - meaning things like nightclubs theatres arena concerts sports crowds etc will be significantly reduced capacity so might not return due to cost.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 15/10/2020 16:32

Yellowish people won't social distance forever. It just won't happen. People are fed up of it already and not complying.

VillageGreenTree · 15/10/2020 16:33

Russia and China already have and are using vaccines. The United Arab Emirates is inoculating medical workers, teachers and airport staff with the Chinese vaccine and Indonesia is currently debating whether or not to go ahead with the same.
It won't be long until we can start to use our own vaccines.

FourTeaFallOut · 15/10/2020 16:34

There are 11 vaccines at stage three of vaccine trials and a further 19 at stage 2- less than a year after the virus was discovered. But don't let that get in the way of the pity party.

Char2015 · 15/10/2020 16:35

Why be so negative. Everything is pointing towards a safe and effective vaccine.

Surely they can't expect people never to see family indoors again?! So that's it then, we all get to meet as a family at funerals they'll never be a wedding because how is anyone ever meant to meet someone to marry without breaking the rules. Absolutely no point it's not living it's existing

There is a really good chance (scientists say over 99%) there will be a vaccine of some form. The main issue is that is may not be fully effective i.e it might help reduce the severity but not prevent people catching it. The roll out is also likely to be slow - maybe late 2021/2022 for younger people.

So I think the probabilty of getting back to normal in a couple of years in terms of social distancing is very high. The economic impacts on the other hand will last for years.

fuckrightoff · 15/10/2020 16:38

@Char2015 yes but WHEN how long is it like this for again? Will it be another 4 months? A year?

OP posts:
Qasd · 15/10/2020 16:39

People will not social distance from people outside their household for ever!!

Seriously if they did the human race could form new sexual relationships unless they formed a “household” first...no sex outside of marriage hasn’t worked throughout human history it isn’t going to suddenly become a thing now!

And I have no idea what will happen without a vaccine but no it will not be social distancing forever! I am always quite bemused when people suggest this did they really have no sexual contact at all with their partners before moving in with each other?!

tortoiseshell1985 · 15/10/2020 16:44

I think there will be one. So many in phase 3 trials

Char2015 · 15/10/2020 16:45

The introduction of a vaccine isn't going to end social distancing, mask wearing, not being able to see family and friends etc. It will be the start of things improving, but we need a significant number of people vaccinated before these restrictions can be phased out. I had read, and by no means is this official guidance, but some scientists have estimated it will take around 6 months to vaccinate the population. The head of the oxford vaccine, said this week that he predicts things like social distancing and mask wearing will be in place until at least July 2021. I think the answer is no one really knows how this will all play out, but we have had very positive feedback coming from the oxford vaccine and other vaccines too.

midgebabe · 15/10/2020 16:45

If they don't get vaccine they will learn how to treat it

Already you have much less chance of dying than you did at the start.

The politicians may be crap the scientists will get there

Ilovemyhairbeingstroked · 15/10/2020 17:24

Treatment and understanding of the virus will continue as well as some sort of vaccine i the future . We’ve already come very far in a short space of time . It seems overwhelming now because of the amount of cases around and an incompetent government.

Remmy123 · 15/10/2020 17:42

Of course there will be a vaccine!! These things do not last forever

Flyonawalk · 15/10/2020 17:55

OP, scientists seem reasonably confident that a vaccine will be at least partially effective. Once that is available to the most vulnerable, I think life will be pretty much back to normal. Most of the population are not at serious risk and restrictions are to protect a relatively small proportion of people.

Flyonawalk · 15/10/2020 17:56

...as a side point, I don’t expect take-up of the vaccine to be very high, but assuming it is available to those who choose to have it, life can continue without restrictions.

TheFormattingIsWrong · 15/10/2020 17:57

Social distancing with those outside you household will be here forever.

Please, as if people would stick to that.

EmMac7 · 15/10/2020 17:59

There will be a vaccine. But the bar for success has been set so low I’m not convinced it’ll be highly effective. They’re looking to reduce symptoms in a certain percentage. Those immunised may still get sick and be able to infect others.

JuiceBogTrotter · 15/10/2020 18:00

Assuming no vaccine (which I believe will happen anyway), then medicine will find effective treatments like it has for pretty much everything, given time.
HIV used to be a death sentence until science caught up and found treatments, if not cures. So did lung cancer and TB, and a host of other common and treatable diseases and illnesses.
I'm assuming that, if noting else, someone will find a treatment that lessens the severity.

Of course social distancing won’t be here forever! How do you think people will meet anyone, have sex, have babies? Lots of people already aren’t complying. We aren’t social distancing with our families. People will go back to normal soon.
1dayatatime · 15/10/2020 18:51

I seem to remember back in April / May many MN posters confidently predicting that a vaccine would be rolled out by September/ October this year.Hmm

Based on what happened in the 1968 Hong King Flu pandemic a vaccine was eventually produced after 2 years but by then there was sufficient herd immunity that it wasn't needed. However it is incorporated into the current flu jab.

So based on advances in medicine since 1968 I would guess a viable vaccine created before winter 2021 and made widely available by winter 2022. However depending on the level of herd immunity by then it may or may not be needed.
