Will this be the new life forever? Is it ever going to end Sad

@Maryann1975

There was a scientist in radio 5 live yesterday morning (around 9.45) who said there has been been an effective vaccine for any human corona virus. They apparently tried with the SARS pandemic but the virus gave up and less people were being infected so the scientists gave up, a vaccine wasn’t needed anymore. Listening to the interview didn’t fill me with hope tbh.
All the scientists say different things there are 100's working on this
midgebabe · 15/10/2020 20:35

They gave up with sars because there was no need, not because it couldn't be done

Heyahun · 15/10/2020 20:36

Fucking hell - demanding answers - how long until a vaccine? How long til we can go back to normal?

Nobody knows. You just have to wait - it’s only been 9 months - vaccines takes a long time - they don’t just quickly produce one 😂

I haven’t seen anyone from my family since last Christmas - they live in a different country - it’s shit but I’d rather stay away and not risk making them sick!

Things will calm down eventually hopefully.

MummyPop00 · 15/10/2020 20:38

Spanish Flu lasted 18 months - 2 years, but wasn’t that because those who caught it died or developed immunity?

Wouldn’t a concern here would be deliberate suppression of the virus doesn’t allow the requisite % of people to (possibly) develop immunity?

Justwingingmotherhood · 15/10/2020 20:44

The Spanish flu ended didnt it..

Dumpypumpy · 15/10/2020 20:49

Once we get instant result testing then life will start to improve massively, though i do worry about the plastic pollution of millions of snap tests being performed every day for months !

fuckrightoff · 15/10/2020 20:51

Thank you @Torvean32 at least there is some end in sight, I hope the trial goes well for you and all the other volunteers

Social distancing with those outside you household will be here forever.
Mandatory masks indoors in public will be here forever.

There have been pandemics in the past and people went back to normal, if they didnt we'd still be SD from Spanish Flu...? SARS and Mers didnt affect here, but people in other countries went back to normal. Wearing a mask on public transport for example was far more common in Asian countries, before covid.....but I'm pretty sure they weren't in the habit of wearing masks for all indoor activities?
OP It's frustrating not having an end point or knowing what the stages are to get there, but literally noone can know how/when this will end. Hopefully there will be a vaccine, treatments will improve, maybe the virus will mutate.....but of course no one can give an exact timescale.

Yes of course I want some answers, a close family member is due to have a baby in a month, we would all like to meet baby at some point before s/he graduates from university!! I don't think it's unreasonable to question being told not to see my family with no timescale involved not even a "when we get a vaccine" or "when the numbers drop to this many"

“The swine flu one caused narcolepsy to loads of people.“

“The UK Health Protection Agency (now Public Health England) undertook a major study of 4- to 18-year-olds and found that around one in every 55,000 jabs led to narcolepsy.“
From narcolepsy.org.

They estimate about 120 people affected in UK. Awful for that 120 but hardly “loads”. I’d take a covid vaccine with those odds if it returned life to normal. I’d probably take one with a 1 in 55,000 chance of death.

Heyahun · 15/10/2020 21:08

But get answers from who!? Nobody knows. They can’t go around giving you time scales because then people will be angry if that changes and has to be longer

I’m due a baby myself soon and have no idea when my parents will get to meet the baby ! I’m upset about it but it’s out of my control.

JoeWicksSurvivor · 15/10/2020 21:12

Google New York Times vaccine tracker - it always makes me feel better.

I read something today about a 5 minute test having been developed.
doireallyneedaname · 15/10/2020 21:31

Without a vaccine we’ll likely reach herd immunity eventually I’m sure. Even without a vaccine there is potential for effective treatment

Oh I don't know...perhaps the government who imposed the lockdown in the first place?! Or is that too much to ask?!

Heyahun · 15/10/2020 21:54

It is too much to ask! They have no idea how long it will take - You just have to wait it out.

RonaLisa · 15/10/2020 21:55

@YellowishZebra

I honestly think vaccine or no vaccine, Social distancing with those outside you household will be here forever. Mandatory masks indoors in public will be here forever. But within 6-9 months we will be able to gather in unlimited numbers as long as social distancing is adhered to - meaning things like nightclubs theatres arena concerts sports crowds etc will be significantly reduced capacity so might not return due to cost.
This is codswallop.

Either the virus will run out of steam and go the way of other hard-hitting but short-lived viruses; or there will be an effective vaccination; or everyone will get so fed up that they will just learn to live with it.

It's sometimes a good idea to remember that we don't know whom we are talking to on MN, and that there are an awful lot of people out there with completely bonkers ideas, who are only given a chance to air them in public because of the internet.

acatcalledcatto · 15/10/2020 22:04

They will get one. China already has one.

Also better treatments will be developed. I hope for this.

The whole point of the restrictions is to try and stop the NHS from becoming overwhelmed, until these things are found.

People just need to stick with it until then.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 15/10/2020 22:05

Yes, I would be worried about the mental health of any RL friend of mine who came out with that. It’s fairly extreme catastrophising.

PinkPiranha11 · 15/10/2020 22:10

The aren’t even planning to give the vaccine to healthy 18-45 year olds anyway. Says it all really. It’ll all be fine by next summer.

MrsFezziwig · 15/10/2020 22:15

I honestly think that even if there is a 100% effective vaccine, they will impose an infinite military lockdown that will never end.

hahahahahahahahaha

So how does that square with keeping the economy going?

Tangledyarn · 15/10/2020 22:16

I'm sure there will be a vaccine and social distancing and mask wearing will become a thing of the past quickly, theres no reason to think any of these restrictions will go on indefinitely. It's only been 7 months, it feels like a long time but in reality isn't and progress with the vaccine is progressing. It wont be perfect but it will mitigate enough of the health consequences that we will return to normal. Even if something catastrophic went wrong with the multiple vaccines being developed measures would still end as treatment became more effective and the damage of restrictions outweighed the damage of covid. I'm pretty sure in a year things will be very different.

MrsFezziwig · 15/10/2020 22:16

Now I’m telling myself off for even bothering to respond to such idiocy.

Mumsnorthernmonkey · 15/10/2020 22:24

So around 40k people have died from this virus, or with the virus.
Spanish flu = our winter flu. Kills lots of people every year with a vaccine.

Youse all need to chill the f out:

ReeseWitherfork · 15/10/2020 22:34

Sorry haven’t RTRF so someone may have pointed it out but it’s not all about a vaccine; if the clever bods can work out a medical intervention that can be used early on to lessen the effect of the virus on a patient then it 1. stops hospitals becoming overwhelmed and 2. stops people dying. And I feel optimistic about the progress being made here.
