What happens if they don't get a vaccine

Will this be the new life forever? Is it ever going to end Sad

If there's no vaccine then herd immunity will build up, it's already a slow trickle and the treatments will vastly improve (which they already have since March). Even with the possibility of reinfection, the above will still happen.

waitforitwaitforit · 15/10/2020 19:25

It's highly unlikely they'll vaccinate the entire population anyway. They'll do the vulnerable (for whatever reason) and the vaccine will be available privately, but they're not going to pay to vaccinate those who are likely to make a full recovery if they do get it.

cardibach · 15/10/2020 19:26

@1dayatatime several vaccine producers still say they’ll have a vaccine ready for production before the end of the year, so not far out from Sept/Oct. I think medical science has come on a bit since 1968 too.

I think it’s really important to remember just how many scientists are working on this & how much money is being pumped in to it.
In normal times there is research going on for any number of vaccines for umpteen things, right now they are throwing everything plus the kitchen sink at research into covid treatments & vaccines.
In our grandparents lifetime things like TB were a killer, now it’s got to the point that we don’t even routinely give the BCG because the vaccine worked so well we don’t need it.
Life is tough at the moment & its easy to worry that it will never improve but just think of the advances science has made against so many other diseases - there’s no reason they won’t be a be to do this.

To the ‘they’ll be a vaccine’ posters how long would be acceptable to wait for one, all things considered? 1 year, 2 years, 5 years, 10 years?

If the intent is to trickle community infection at a level so as to not swamp the NHS in the meantime, that could take years, yes?

So how long do you realistically think the scientists have got?

This is my fear @MummyPop00 that it will be "just another 3 months" repeated for 3 years and in the meantime the elderly relatives we shouldn't see may not be here from other reasons, humans are social creatures we need interaction it just feels so miserable and hopeless at the moment having to constantly cancel plans and not being able to reschedule

There are a lot of vaccine candidates currently being tested. Even if the first few that finish that stage don't prevent you from getting infected, they may well stop from getting very ill. So there are good things that can happen short of a vaccine.

@YellowishZebra

I honestly think vaccine or no vaccine, Social distancing with those outside you household will be here forever. Mandatory masks indoors in public will be here forever. But within 6-9 months we will be able to gather in unlimited numbers as long as social distancing is adhered to - meaning things like nightclubs theatres arena concerts sports crowds etc will be significantly reduced capacity so might not return due to cost.
Stop scaremongering.
Torvean32 · 15/10/2020 19:49

In the next 2 weeks , 10 000 ppl across the UK are taking part in a Covid vaccination study.

I know as im one of them. I was there today. The consultant told me 3 vaccine studies are close to being licenced.

So dont worry masks and SD are not for ever.

There's not a chance that'll happen. They can't ask people to socially distance forever, if they did I would happily tell them where to shove it.

Forever? Are you insane??
Maryann1975 · 15/10/2020 19:58

There was a scientist in radio 5 live yesterday morning (around 9.45) who said there has been been an effective vaccine for any human corona virus. They apparently tried with the SARS pandemic but the virus gave up and less people were being infected so the scientists gave up, a vaccine wasn’t needed anymore.
Listening to the interview didn’t fill me with hope tbh.

Frazzled13 · 15/10/2020 20:07

So, no one will date? Hug their grandchildren? Ever?

bathorshower · 15/10/2020 20:19

In answer to your question OP, other pandemics have largely receded after two years - that's the rough time frame for Spanish flu and the 1968 pandemic; by that point the combination of herd immunity and the virus mutating to something less lethal mean that the death rate falls right off.

I'd be the first to say I don't fancy two years of restrictions, but that's the time frame that similar diseases in the past point towards.

I think the opposite as soon as masks can be burnt and hugging strangers allowed there will be a wicker Man/Woodstock 2.0 rave in Trafalgar Square! Never underestimate the UK's desire and capability to party on the streets

Which vaccine is this for? Is this something done after the end of a phase III trial?

You are talking shit !!

No business will survive
No relationships
Don't be so stupid jeez

AKissAndASmile · 15/10/2020 20:28

How long did the Spanish flu epidemic last and did they have a vaccine? Of course this isn't forever!

..as a side point, I don’t expect take-up of the vaccine to be very high, but assuming it is available to those who choose to have it, life can continue without restrictions

Agree with this. I'm not having a rushed vaccine. The swine flu one caused narcolepsy to loads of people.

TwistAndTout · 15/10/2020 20:33

I honestly think that even if there is a 100% effective vaccine, they will impose an infinite military lockdown that will never end.
