Delivery man not wearing a mask

Dongdingdong · 15/10/2020 13:14

I just opened the door to a delivery driver not wearing a mask. He put the parcel on the doorstep but was about two feet away from me when I opened it, despite me taking a while to get to the door, thereby giving him ample time to walk two metres clear. He'll be visiting 100 households today at least - clearly not a very good idea.

No doubt the MN Covid police will be along in a minute to defend him to the hilt and say he doesn't need to wear a mask because he's exempt - whilst simultaneously arguing that people aren't taking restrictions seriously Hmm

I've had enough of this farce!

Has been a mixed bag with our deliveries. Some wear masks and some don't.

The groceries delivery driver always does and it made me wonder if I should wear one while I take the shopping in. I haven't so far but I probably get closer to them on the doorstep than I do to the cashier in the supermarket.

viccat · 15/10/2020 15:11

I get several deliveries a week (parcels/supermarket/take away etc.) and only two or three delivery people have worn a mask since the start of the first lockdown.

I'm generally quite risk-averse but I'm not too worried about it as they are outside and the contact is extremely short in duration. That said I've also noticed they don't leave as much space now as they did in the height of lockdown - my postie handed a parcel to me earlier this week when they've been putting it in front of my door and stepping back for months.

MaudesMum · 15/10/2020 15:22

My postman asked me the other day if I wanted a parcel handed to me or if he should put it down - which I thought was nice. Especially since we're entering a time of year where parcels might well be placed in a puddle if they're put down. And, no, never seen a delivery man wearing a mask round here, and I really don't see why they should - momentary contact, and outdoors.

AcornAutumn · 15/10/2020 15:39

the law doesn't say he needs to wear one outside?

I've had deliveries, no mask. In fact, he comes inside the block of flats. Which is still fine. Masks aren't mandated indoors!

Dawnlassie · 15/10/2020 15:44

Bit unfair to expect a person working outside to wear a mask all day.

Hatscats · 15/10/2020 15:46

Why would he need a mask? He’s outdoors and goes nowhere near you. What do you think the mask would even achieve 🙄

AcornAutumn · 15/10/2020 15:51

OP “ I've had enough of this farce!”

I’m curious what you mean by this. He’s not breaking a law.

Spam88 · 15/10/2020 19:35

@Yesterdayforgotten I'm not talking about standing halfway down the hall, I just stand at the end of the door. I imagine it would be a rare property that doesn't have space for the front door to open fully.

MereDintofPandiculation · 15/10/2020 19:40

I imagine it would be a rare property that doesn't have space for the front door to open fully. Yes, but when we had young kittens I used my body in the gap between door and frame to stop them getting out - the point about pets or young children possibly running out is valid.

MaxNormal · 15/10/2020 19:42

I don't think any of my delivery people wear masks?
Maybe be grateful they are out there doing what they do to enable others to stay in.

Spanielmadness · 15/10/2020 19:46

I’m doing deliveries for Amazon and we are supposed to wear masks. It’s stupid - you can’t catch COVID from across the garden/down the steps etc, which is where I stand after I’ve dropped the item off.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 15/10/2020 19:47

@thedevilinablackdress

I have not once seen a postie or delivery person wearing a mask when they've delivered here. Never thought anything of it as I'm never close and they're gone in seconds.
My experience too.
MiddleClassMother · 15/10/2020 19:54

I don't think masks are that effective tbh, I wear mine but only at the supermarket. I've not seen any delivery drivers etc wearing a mask.

Jrobhatch29 · 15/10/2020 19:57

My amazon man always wears a mask but I wouldn't care if he didn't. None of the other delivery drivers have had one on.

Dongdingdong · 15/10/2020 20:08

We get lots of deliveries and now I think about it I can't remember any of them wearing a mask. Hadn't even given it a second thought until now. How long were you talking to him at close quarters?

About 10 seconds whilst he fished out his phone and took a photo of me accepting the parcel as proof of delivery.

Why would he need a mask? He’s outdoors and goes nowhere near you. What do you think the mask would even achieve

He was two feet away, as stated in my OP. Hardly "nowhere near" Hmm

Bit unfair to expect a person working outside to wear a mask all day.

I wouldn't expect him to wear it in his van, or approaching/leaving the house. But it's not too much to ask for someone to wear a mask when they're two feet away from your doorstep handing you a parcel.

You have to consider that postmen and dibery driverst are handling parcels and mail all day and won't want to keep touching their face to put masks on and off. Yes they could anti bac but their hands would be red raw after every letter / parcel

Delivery drivers*

DominaShantotto · 15/10/2020 20:19

Your delivery guy stayed put long enough for you to be worried about him not wearing a mask?! Our Amazon guy's back in his van, turned around and off down the street by the time the doorbell's finished ringing! (I swear Usain Bolt has our patch at the moment)

guitarstringseadgbe · 15/10/2020 20:24

God what have we done to our society to be this terrified of each other Sad

doireallyneedaname · 15/10/2020 20:26

Yep, 9/10 of my deliveries are this way. I actually called Ocado to request that my delivery drivers wear masks and social distance and they asked if my recent delivery had been any other way as they are all supposed to be doing it. I didn’t complain at the time but now I just shout from the window that we are isolating and ask them to leave the bags outside. One way of doing it!

Our posties don’t give a shit either, straight up to the door and DPD are the worst, really close so they can get a “photo” of the delivered goods in my doorway.

BrightSunshineDay · 15/10/2020 20:32

None of the delivery drivers I've had wear masks, neither did the 2 gas engineers who've just been in my house. Doesn't bother me, they don't work anyway otherwise half my colleagues wouldn't have just had covid as we all wear masks all day and some became infected over a week into isolation. I assume the delivery driver wasn't in close proximity for over a minute as that is when you're supposed to wear them but really you're not likely to get covid unless in close proximity for 15 minutes or more unless someone coughs right in your face. Plus I find people who wear masks think it negates the need for social distancing which is actually effective.

Palavah · 15/10/2020 20:33

Is this a joke?

This is what I thought too. It's so sad that we are frightened and intolerant of eachother. Seeing a source of germs rather than a person with feelings
Topseyt · 15/10/2020 21:16

I've never seen any of the delivery drivers round here wearing masks. Why would they?

Even if I do briefly end up closer than 2 metres on the doorstep, it is literally for a couple of seconds. It is an absolute non-issue. Why would it not be?

emptyplinth · 15/10/2020 21:22

Wow.
Unless he's intubating you as he drops the fucking parcel off, I'd imagine this is like a 0% infection risk.
Next time just stand back and let him do his job and be thankful people are working this hard to bring you stuff.
Selfish and whiny.
