Conclusion
"The inferred infection fatality rates
tended to be much lower than estimates made earlier in the pandemic."

Can we get a grip yet?

@hamstersarse I've lost my sense of smell from the virus. Five days in and holding onto hope it returns, but just to say it's one of the cruellest symptoms you could think of adding to a virus. I wouldn't wish this on anyone.

unchienandalusia · 14/10/2020 21:48

But do you want the economy and this country to go down for your sense of smell?

MarmiteCrumpet25 · 14/10/2020 21:50

Hospitals are already starting to be overwhelmed- what do you suggest we do about that?

Redolent · 14/10/2020 21:51

9% hospitalization rate for people in their 50s (Lancet study). You work out how that’ll impact the healthcare system.

whereisthejoy · 14/10/2020 21:52

I said I wouldn't wish it on anyone else.

Is that an ironic post?

Yes but over 70s are a pretty large section of the population. And what kind of society is willing to sacrifice its older generation for the sake of the economy?

isitorisntit · 14/10/2020 21:52

@whereisthejoy Sorry to say, I'm 7 months and 1 day in... I can't smell or taste. Good luck. I hope you're one of the lucky ones.

KnightsofColumbusThatHurt · 14/10/2020 21:53

😂

hamstersarse · 14/10/2020 21:53

The older generation are susceptible to pretty much any bug.

This is no different

I had a car crash in my early 20s, brain trauma, never regained my sense of smell. I'm alive. So are you. The world can't close down because you might lose your sense of smell. Get a grip

Confused

rosina38 · 14/10/2020 21:55

@whereisthejoy I had Covid mid March and totally lost my sense of smell and taste. I would say it's improving but the majority of things smell 'wrong' or different to what they used to. Fed up with it now

CrappleUmble · 14/10/2020 21:57

@Redolent

Is that stats from when barely anyone was getting tested? I cannot imagine 9% of infected over 50s now are being hospitalized.
Hardbackwriter · 14/10/2020 21:57

I don't really understand the point you're making unless you think people over 70 aren't really people?

starfro · 14/10/2020 21:58

Epidemiologists will tell you that IFRs tend to be over-estimates during a Pandemic by an order of magnitude.

Having said that, Covid was much more transmissible due to a lack of immunity in the population. Hopefully this situation is slowly improving as more people get infected.

Nellodee · 14/10/2020 21:58

We can, if we trust all the data to be equally accurate.

From the paper's own figures, for example, I would give a little more weight to England 1.16 than I would Iran's 0.08.

LadyWithLapdog · 14/10/2020 21:59

I can’t believe the callousness of some of the replies. The sense of smell contributes a lot to enjoying food and life.

notevenat20 · 14/10/2020 21:59

This is the risk with just taking whatever is on the web. Nature is a leading journal and there you get

The IFR was close to zero for people between the ages of 15 and 44, increasing to 3.1% for 65–74-year-olds and to 11.6% for anyone older

www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-02483-2

Notice that the reference the OP gave is outlandish in a number of ways. For example it claims that over 500 million had already been infected at the time of writing. I would just ignore it.

unchienandalusia · 14/10/2020 21:59

@whereisthejoy I don't however think it's the cruellest effect of this virus.

hamstersarse · 14/10/2020 22:00

Are people seriously saying that we close the economy because you might lose your sense of smell?!

And yes, I say The Economy deliberately because if you haven’t yet realised what the impact of these hugely disproportionate acts are having then you haven’t thought much past the BBC headline

I see people on here saying “I’ve a secure job”

There’ll be no such thing unless we get this thing in proportion

OP posts:
Nellodee · 14/10/2020 22:00

To be honest, I am extremely surprised that it has our IFR in England being so high, and am rather dubious of it from a "too high" perspective, as well as an overall "too low" perspective.

Nellodee · 14/10/2020 22:01

Sorry - it has us as 0.27 for under 70s, I was reading from the overall column. 1 in 400 dying for the working age group is high, though.

LadyWithLapdog · 14/10/2020 22:02

Oh, let’s ridicule people. Carry on. Enjoy your evening.

unchienandalusia · 14/10/2020 22:02

@LadyWithLapdog however not quite up there with losing your livelihood, home, public services, mental health or, you know, your actual life.
