Ballet Dancer or Cyber Security

Buckwheat80 · 12/10/2020 22:36

I'm trying to work out whether to pursue a career as a ballet dancer or in cyber security. Can anyone help me decide?

Its obviously very easy to retrain in cyber security. I might do it myself.

nancy75 · 12/10/2020 22:38

I would help but I’ve been advised to become a computer programmer, given that posting on mumsnet is the height of my computer skills I think I’ve got a bit of studying to do

Sunbird24 · 12/10/2020 22:40

I work in cyber security, main benefit over being a ballerina is that nobody cares if you get fat.

Comefromaway · 12/10/2020 22:41

With feet like Fatima’s I’d go for the cyber security.

Seriously though (& I speak as the mum of a girl who has been in full time dance training since the age of 11 & is now in her final year) the ad that someone has resurrected was part of a group of ads featuring people in a variety of careers who may be thinking of changing direction.

Cyber first aims to get young people who are under represented in the industry to think about the possibility.

meow1989 · 12/10/2020 22:41

Well I've been suggested to go into the area I already work in so automatic success for me.

I imagine ballerinas to have beautiful hands with slender long fingers so assume that they would be very well placed for quick typing required for cyber security. Obviously.

Comefromaway · 12/10/2020 22:42

It’s an old ad campaign from about a year ago.

Plexie · 12/10/2020 22:42

Unless you've been training since childhood, taken exams, auditioned and been admitted to a specialist school, and are about to successfully audition for a professional company, I'd suggest you take the easy option and get a job in cyber security.

nancy75 · 12/10/2020 22:43

It may be an old campaign but the daft skills swap website thing is still making stupid suggestions. It told my friend to become a boxer

SheepandCow · 12/10/2020 22:44

More money and opportunities in cyber security.

I presume you're referring to the government careers advise thing? It's nothing new. People have been told to retrain or apply for different jobs for years. Jobcentres have long threatened to 'sanction' benefit claimants unless they apply for any and all jobs (regardless of how much it might piss off a prospective employer when they're inundated with unsuitable applications!).

I'm sorry if you're in the position of needing to find a new job. It's so tough. If you think you have the ability, experience, and or skills cyber security is actually a good one to go for.

Whatever you're looking for, I wish you luck in your job search.

Comefromaway · 12/10/2020 22:45

And even then Plexie one injury and it’s all kaput. Dd never wanted to be a ballet dancer which is funny considering she attends a big 4 school and is no longer able to do pointe due to feet/ankle injuries but hopes to find her way in musical theatre/voiceover/general dance.

But it’s a short lived career.

Janedownourlane · 12/10/2020 22:47

I can retrain to be a baggage handler apparently...lots of call for that atm!

titchy · 12/10/2020 22:49

Anyone got a link

Iheardarumour · 12/10/2020 22:51

If Mayor Khan ever shuts down the Tube I will be out of a job...but I never want to work in cyber security. At this rate I wouldn't even qualify to sweep the streets.

This is going to be my new job

I just need a few lessons in actually using a computer & I’ll be a natural! Grin

ShaunaTheSheep · 12/10/2020 23:05

I’m suited to being a royal marine apparently Hmm

I was hoping it would suggest early retirement.

nancy75 · 12/10/2020 23:06

@titchy, well students like booze so there is that link to your current role - sounds like it’s just the thing for you 😂

Sunbird24 · 12/10/2020 23:08

Apparently I could be a Royal Marines Officer - pretty sure you still have to be a man for that one...

DoTheNextRightThing · 12/10/2020 23:11

Question is will they offset the student debt from my first degree to pay for me to retrain in cyber security? 🤔 or am I just expected to pull money out my fanny?

nancy75 · 12/10/2020 23:12

This reminds me of a friend of mine, many years ago he’d just left uni with a really good degree (something like architecture) he was job hunting (in the days when there were jobs) but needed to sign on.
The woman at the job centre wasn’t happy with the type of jobs he said he was looking for because they didn’t come up in the job centre very often & made him choose something else he would accept.
My friend, in his infinite wisdom, put Trainer Lion Tamer - he then shit himself every time he went to sign on just in case they’d found him a suitable role 😂

DimidDavilby · 12/10/2020 23:14

If you can pull money out of your fanny @DotheNextRightThing I don't think you need a job

yawnsvillex · 12/10/2020 23:15

Fucking hell I used that link and got the job I do now!

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 12/10/2020 23:18

I got telephonist in a call centre when i did that test.

I can't think of a worse job I'd be suited to tbh
