Chris Whitty saying even tier 3 probably wont be enough to reduce the R

What do you think this means for areas in tier 3, total lockdown? How soon do you think this would happen and how likely is it for tier 2 areas to be upgraded to the same level? Do you think the much rumoured circuit breaker over half term is likely at least in these areas?

Juniperandrage · 12/10/2020 22:40

Reading between the lines, I got the impression that Chris Whittey feels the measures are too little, implemented way too late (again) to avoid a national lockdown

That's the impression i got too. His not so subtle subtext was that it's been a monumental fuck up and the only way to get it back on track was pretty draconian measures

Hazelnutlatteplease · 12/10/2020 22:40

Of course it isn't enough. Test and trace is not good enough. Schools will have to close, we can't have schools and an economy. Unfortunately the government has stupidly promised schools, so they will try and persevere with both until the death toll is raging. We actually needed proper online schooling to be put place.

Bollss · 12/10/2020 22:41

Right and even if it is who is staying home with all these kids when people need to work for a living? Online schooling is not a solution.

Devlesko · 12/10/2020 22:45

What does Chris whitty expect us to do then? Lock down harder, come out, cases rise, go back in, come back out, do the fucking lockdown hokey cokey?

That really made me chuckle Thanks
I'm still laughing.

InTheVelvetDarkness · 12/10/2020 22:45

Online schooling is not an option for so many .

Not enough private space to quietly learn
Chaotic homes
Inadequate resources
Parents that cannot WFH that need to go out to work in supermarkets / takeaways / hospitals - what do they do with 6 year old children ?

ColonSemiColon · 12/10/2020 22:48

Fuck me, do you really think the CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER doesn’t care about cancer deaths? When we first went into lockdown he warned us there would have to be rolling lockdowns until a vaccine or a cure. So yes, that’s exactly what he thinks should happen and has all along. It’s his job to offer advice on the medical issues, not to give a shit about Tim Martin’s profits.

QueenOllie · 12/10/2020 22:50

In putting preston in tier 2 they've actually loosened restrictions Confused
We've been in local restrictions for weeks which have done nothing and they've loosened them!

Why the hell does anyone think they know better.

I think he cares about covid at this moment in time and that's it, and I think he'll probably resign just before it becomes apparent how many deaths were caused by lockdowns. I know he's thought it all along, that doesn't mean I have to agree.

It's not about individuals profits but you do realise that the tax payer pays for the NHS don't you?

A bad economy = bad health outcomes = lower life expectancy.

Willyoujustbequiet · 12/10/2020 22:53

Tier 3 wont work without closing/changing the schools and unis.

Its like moving the deckchairs on the titanic when you could avoid the iceberg in the first place.

Bollss · 12/10/2020 22:53

I don't think I know better. I just don't agree with him, and I don't think decisions should be based on what he says alone, which at the moment, it seems like they are.

Yes, cue the garden parties!
PrimalLass · 12/10/2020 22:55

Without a functioning economy there’s no money for essential services such as the nhs.

No money for Boris and chums to spaff up a wall.

MadameBlobby · 12/10/2020 23:01

I don’t think CW cares just about Covid. I do worry that too much heed is being paid to what he says when the government really need to consider things other than health and the NHS.

ColonSemiColon · 12/10/2020 23:01

It’s Covid that’s screwing the economy, not Chris Whitty or even Boris Johnson, loathsome though he is. Same with the other health impacts.

ColonSemiColon · 12/10/2020 23:02

Hahaha at too much heed being paid to Chris Whitty when the government keep ignoring his recommendations.

saraclara · 12/10/2020 23:02

I don't know how things are further south. There's probably better testing facilities and preventative measures at Oxbridge or Eton for example. Cases are rising further south but they're behind the north.

The South means Oxbridge or Eton to you @annabel85 ?!

As a northerner transplanted to the south east, I'm usually laughing myself silly at southerners' ideas of the North. But your post outdoes them all!!!!

Well we need to have schools and an economy, as neither of these are optional extras.
LastTrainEast · 12/10/2020 23:03

It's the government who make the decisions. The experts tell them what they know. They are only supposed to know about their area of expertise.

Having those experts on TV telling you what they think let's you know what data the decisions are based on.

Feelingconfused2020 · 12/10/2020 23:04

He doesn't have a plan other than argh high numbers we look bad lock down! He does have a plan. The SAGE document clearly states that he wants a 2/3 week circuit breaker lockdown and universities to teach online. He also thinks households shouldn't mix.

saraclara · 12/10/2020 23:05

@KetoPenguin

Yes it seems unfair on local councils to have to make the decision. Of course they should have some input but no-one is going to like it if their business gets told to close.
The local councils have been nagging the PM for weeks to be allowed to make the decisions, as they know their areas better than the London based govt, and can use their own resources more effectively.

So it's far from unfair, as it's what they asked for.

If you don't agree, what is your opinion about what should be done? That you think might be better.

But he never explains anything. I mean they showed us a graph that was wrong and other than that it's just been threats really...
swg1 · 12/10/2020 23:06

@TrustTheGeneGenie Report from on the ground in an area where covid hospitalised are rising - my kid's MRI (not, thank god, looking for cancer) has been moved up from Saturday to Wednesday.

The impression I got from the very nice lady on the phone was that they're trying to move all urgent cases in ASAP because they feel like covid might overwhelm all systems shortly.

Which is not what you appear to believe is happening.

This. He's non committal because he doesn't agree with the approach.

It is possible to manage this alongside a functional economy, look at Singapore or Hong Kong or Vietnam for guidance, not the rest of Europe or the dreams of people who think we can just keep living our lives and have our health service and our elderly and.vulnerable not steamrollered by covid.
