Sounds like Boris wants Manchester in tier 3

He mentioned about hoping MPs would allow Manchester to go into tier 3 but isn't it up to him anyway even if Andy Burnham says no?

@amusedtodeath1

My DD has to leave Lancashire to go into Greater Manchester for college. Tier 3 states no leaving or entering other areas. But schools and universities are to stay open (no mention of colleges).

If we're going into tier 3, I'd say she can't go, but it's really not clear.

Education isn't effected.
CrappleUmble · 15/10/2020 13:54

I think they have probably all forgotten Warrington isn't in Merseyside, Lancashire or G Manchester tbh.

Apparently they left Lisa Nandy out of a briefing meeting for all Greater Manchester MPs the other day, so there hasn't been a brilliant grasp of north-west geography shown thus far.

www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/confusion-chaos-greater-manchester-reported-19108211
Confusion and chaos as Greater Manchester reported to be in ‘tier three’ local lockdown - but isn’t

Yet, even as the meeting had been going on, national news outlets were already reporting that leaders had been told the move was to be immediately imposed, seemingly as a result of government briefings.

Those actually in the meeting seemed baffled, as that was not what was being said, or ultimately was said.

and

Tory MPs in particular - of which Greater Manchester has nine, including the chair of the backbench 1922 committee, Sir Graham Brady - bombarded the minister with questions.

All the Conservative MPs indicated that they wanted to speak right from the start, according to one member present.

Sir Graham is said to have told the minister that they will ‘all oppose tier three’ and that the move cannot be imposed.

It sounds like there is a strange alliance of Conservative MPs and Andy Burnham threatening legal action...

PhilSwagielka · 15/10/2020 13:55

So what is it then?

CrappleUmble · 15/10/2020 13:56

If we were in Tier 3 now, the legislation would have to say so.

TokyoSushi · 15/10/2020 13:58

They're just replaying the report from Warrington hospital on Sky News now, I'd agree that from the information given, and the case numbers we need to move to T3.

I'd also agree that there were huge rumours around the town on Monday that we were going into T3, but it turns out that was because Westminster had assumed we were in the Liverpool City region. Now I'd guess they're assuming we're in GM or the wider, 'Lancashire' area, so will remain largely neglected until the last minute, when somebody points out their error, again.

Frazzled2207 · 15/10/2020 13:58

@PhilSwagielka

So what is it then?
The government has decided GM should go into tier 3 but the 10 councils and 27 MPs (some tory) have been unanimous in saying it should not. So it won’t (yet). If the government coughs up more money they might agree.
Devlesko · 15/10/2020 13:58

Yes Red was just musing really. Not much we can do until an announcement.
Do you think they are taking their time due to post codes and bordering counties.
We've family around the East lancs area, inc Wigan, Leigh, Lowton, Atherton and dd boarding at school in Manchester.
Then those in tier 3 in Saints.

They sent an invite to Warrington North MP for the Liverpool City Region lockdown on Monday. She had to inform them Warrington was not part of either Merseyside or the Liverpool City Region.

Then Kay Burley of SkyNews said on Tuesday that Warrington used to be part of Merseyside.

It has never been. The town was part of Lancashire until 1974. Then part of Cheshire. Then a Unitary Authority.

Parts of the Borough of Warrington have never been part of Lancashire.

There's talk of lawyering.

Devlesko · 15/10/2020 14:13

Lisa Nandy posted on twitter when she wasn't even invited to the briefing.
I like her she does us proud Grin

CrappleUmble · 15/10/2020 14:22

I think she was at the one today! Hopefully they learned their lesson about where Wigan actually is after the last fuck up.

news.sky.com/story/coronavirus-this-is-what-a-second-wave-looks-like-12102895
Coronavirus: 'This is what a second wave looks like' in an intensive care unit

The relentless rise of infections in the North West has led to a surge in hospital admissions. Warrington Hospital's intensive care unit is almost full. There are only two empty beds left. Soon extra capacity will be needed.

Warrington has 20 intensive care beds. Its being reported by the hospital that they have 12 beds occupied by covid patients. What they aren't reporting is the other 6 occupied for other reasons.

Halton Hospital (part of the same NHS trust and actually in T3) is supposed to be dealing with non covid patients, so its a little confusing and there is the ability to go into contingency measures. But its BAD. And nearly as bad as the situation in Liverpool which people have picked up on.

It is a really bizarre situation to have Warrington which isn't T3 but Halton which is T3, but the covid hospital from Halton and Warrington NHS Trust is the one in Warrington not the Halton one - so you have to leave a T3 area to go to hospital with covid if you live in Halton.

If the point of T3 is to protect the hospitals its even stranger.

Warrington does have lower numbers than Halton but not significantly.

Anyway I'm going to see friends in Warrington in their back garden tonight as they have been struggling for a few weeks with numerous family issues and my gran died this week (thankfully not covid and she was in her 90s so not altogether unexpected and I didn't know her well at all) so we all could REALLY do with the company before restricts do hit. Everyone is v strict on the social distancing stuff too so I'm glad there is a brief respite to do so before the shit hits the fan but I can see loads of other people being a lot less vigilant and this weekend being a complete car crash.

Devlesko · 15/10/2020 14:29

He's not going down without a fight, must be the Leyther in him.

Devlesko · 15/10/2020 14:36

Red

So sorry to hear about your gran, upsetting at any age Thanks
I'm going to start going over to see my gc, under the guise of informal childcare.
I'm sure ds/dil will have places they need to go to, or we'll take them out sometimes when the weather isn't too bad.

RedToothBrush · 15/10/2020 14:42

Develesko, thank you. I really can't say I'm devasted because my family dynamics are dysfunctional to say the least. But not being able to see people does compound feelings when you have news like that, and can't do anything else understand restrictions/guidance.

I do think the issue here is that we have the first weekend for months where many people ARE allowed to see people in backgardens in the NW and people are definitely going to exercise that, because they KNOW its likely to be just this weekend they can do that.

HeyMacarona · 15/10/2020 14:56

the council are planning patrols of the border areas and town centre this weekend (to keep the scousers out).

Keep scousers out of Warrington? The only reason scousers go to Warrington is for IKEA if we’re talking pubs they would head off to Manchester.

Look at the Graph below, the dark green areas with the highest concentration of cases are in the 2 areas with 3 unis and masses of student accommodation. Plenty of the students in Liverpool are from Warrington (I know this as I’ve been a Liverpool uni student). If you look at the 7 day rolling average for Liverpool it’s already decreasing now without restrictions.

Sounds like Boris wants Manchester in tier 3

Only repeating whats been said...

10pm curfew means you can get the train home fine too.

If you're referring to Andy Burnham, he's from Aintree.

TokyoSushi · 15/10/2020 15:32

Andy Burnham due to give a statement on Sky News in the next few minutes...

Devlesko · 15/10/2020 15:42

Lily

He lived in Leigh from when he was little, unless he travelled miles to go to school. He went to Bedford High, and iirc Leigh central primary before that.
I don't know him as not from this area but dh knows him well from old, not now.

ColdBlow · 15/10/2020 19:53

@fairynick @grumpycivilservant

Re. my comment on Sir Graham being a good constituency MP, that's my experience. I'm at the opposite end of the political spectrum to him so no interest in bigging him up. I've contacted him twice by email and once at his surgery and he's been helpful and responsive.

The only other MP I've ever contacted was appalling. Chuka Umuna never responded to anything, despite chasers and acknowledgements from his assistants.

StubbleTurnips · 15/10/2020 20:08

As someone living on the east lancs corridor I am enjoying the fuck ups in central governments knowledge of the NW if I’m honest.

The lack of clarity around the Warrington continuum means that the scousers on the edge and mancs can border hop and congregate at Bents For Brew Cake

RedToothBrush · 15/10/2020 20:21

No!!!!! I want to see the Christmas Decorations!

RedToothBrush · 15/10/2020 20:22

And the dinosaurs. Its all about the dinosaurs!
