Coronavirus: 'This is what a second wave looks like' in an intensive care unit
The relentless rise of infections in the North West has led to a surge in hospital admissions. Warrington Hospital's intensive care unit is almost full. There are only two empty beds left. Soon extra capacity will be needed.
Warrington has 20 intensive care beds. Its being reported by the hospital that they have 12 beds occupied by covid patients. What they aren't reporting is the other 6 occupied for other reasons.
Halton Hospital (part of the same NHS trust and actually in T3) is supposed to be dealing with non covid patients, so its a little confusing and there is the ability to go into contingency measures. But its BAD. And nearly as bad as the situation in Liverpool which people have picked up on.
It is a really bizarre situation to have Warrington which isn't T3 but Halton which is T3, but the covid hospital from Halton and Warrington NHS Trust is the one in Warrington not the Halton one - so you have to leave a T3 area to go to hospital with covid if you live in Halton.
If the point of T3 is to protect the hospitals its even stranger.
Warrington does have lower numbers than Halton but not significantly.
Anyway I'm going to see friends in Warrington in their back garden tonight as they have been struggling for a few weeks with numerous family issues and my gran died this week (thankfully not covid and she was in her 90s so not altogether unexpected and I didn't know her well at all) so we all could REALLY do with the company before restricts do hit. Everyone is v strict on the social distancing stuff too so I'm glad there is a brief respite to do so before the shit hits the fan but I can see loads of other people being a lot less vigilant and this weekend being a complete car crash.
