Children coughing ...

I went to a Garden Centre this morning. All worked well - people miles apart, all wearing masks, etc. I got to the till and there was a woman in front of me with a small child. I waited behind the line until they had cleared the till when the * child turned back to face me and coughed and coughed with his mouth open. Great! Why don't parents make their kids put a hand in front of their face when coughing? Now I am going to be worried that I've caught it from him for the next 10 days.

Kids cough there's a million reasons why

onedayinthefuture · 12/10/2020 12:39

You said small child, little kids don't always understand. Kids cough for a variety of things. You should look to online delivery if you're that worried.

FourTeaFallOut · 12/10/2020 12:44

Kids cough. You teach them to cover their mouths but it takes them time to develop the instinct to do so quickly enough in time for an involuntary reflex.

Sitt · 12/10/2020 12:46

How old? Teaching them to do it is an process, you don’t just tell them once and they get it. I will put my hand in front of my 2yo’s mouth as i remind him if I get there in time, but I won’t always make it

Notselfish · 12/10/2020 12:51

Parents do, but children won't always remember, It's your elbow by the way not your hand, if you cough into your hand then touch things you'll just spread the germs.

There are many reasons why people cough and I doubt you've caught Covid.

Char2015 · 12/10/2020 12:53

Small child. Enough said.

Lipz · 12/10/2020 12:54

How small are you that a child is in direct line with your face?

You had a mask.

You were behind the line, they cleared the till, so you should have been more than 2 metres apart. This is why they ask that you wait till the customer in front is at a good distance.

triceratops12 · 12/10/2020 12:55

Small children don't understand and even if a parent tells them they don't understand why. Also kids cough all the time.

Belle0705 · 12/10/2020 12:59

I could understand being upset at a grown adult coughing allover but not a small child. They can't help it and they cough for all sorts of reasons.

TheKeatingFive · 12/10/2020 13:34

Small children cough. I'm not quite sure what you want done about that. I'm sure the parents have been trying their best to instill

* child

TheKeatingFive · 12/10/2020 13:35

Whoops.

Instill hygiene measures. It'll go in for the small child eventually.

As for this 'xxx child'. What choice word were you thinking of there to describe a small kid who doesn't have a clue what's going on?

ChaChaCha2012 · 12/10/2020 13:42

Now I am going to be worried that I've caught it from him for the next 10 days.

I suggest you self isolate to ensure you don't pass on your possible virus to anybody else.

Or you could get a grip.

I thought that. What is the xxx for?
MrTumblesSpottyHag · 12/10/2020 13:53

How exactly would you "make" a small child cover their mouth?
You can remind and remind until you're blue in the face and eventually it will sink.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 12/10/2020 13:55

You're overreacting. It's more likely to just be a cough than it is covid19.

My just 3yo and is pretty good but doesn't always cough in to his elbow, he just forgets or doesn't get it there in time, if I can I'll stick my arm in front of his mouth but it's not always possible. He's not doing it to be naughty, he just forgets.

passmethewineplease · 12/10/2020 13:56

The dramatics.

Kids are taught to cough in to their elbow - sometimes they forget. I doubt he was doing it deliberately to piss you off.

Calm down.

WankPuffins · 12/10/2020 14:02

Not everyone who coughs has Covid.

I’m sure you’ll be fine.

Scaraffito · 12/10/2020 14:07

It depends how old they are amongst other things as to whether 'teaching them' works. DS has an enduring respiratory illness which results in a dry cough, he has tests regularly because he is in hospital for appointments semi regularly and all negative. My choices are to go out when we need to and expect it could be distressing for others to worry about catching covid from him when they hear him cough, or I can keep him locked up for an indefinite amount of time. Sorry, I do the former.

FourPlasticRings · 12/10/2020 14:21

Have you thought about seeking help for your anxiety?

Okaro · 12/10/2020 16:53

Oh yes cause every coughing child has Covid! Hmm

BigBadVoodooHat · 12/10/2020 17:06

Why don't parents make their kids put a hand in front of their face when coughing?

Well, quite! As everyone in the world knows, ‘making’ a small child do anything is the easiest thing in the world.

Hmm
Badgerstmary · 12/10/2020 17:10

Try working in a preschool at the moment. We have no social distancing with little ones & yes sometimes they cough. We are also sitting at their level.

Were you not two metres away? If not that's on you as they were at the till so you must have been the one getting too close. If so, and a child coughed at what must have been the height of your knees from 2m away then I think you can probably stop worrying.
3littlewords · 12/10/2020 17:51

A small child coughed ,I'm going to assume you was standing at least 2m away and wearing a mask if you weren't you should have been and you get all hysterical the "xxx" child has infected you with Covid!
Threads like this just highlight how much the world has gone nuts Confused
