With profuse apologies for the daily fail link:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8819333/Heat-map-reveals-200-towns-cities-high-Covid-19-infection-rates.html

Does anyone know if this is at all accurate? According to this my area (and much of the country) is in the 'red' and soon to go into some kind of lockdown...

Id be surprised if tier 3 was as low as 50 per 100000.other news suggests its mainly the north. Bbc says they're still discussing the detail!

rosesandchips · 10/10/2020 13:00

Yes that does seem low!

But even in yellow areas (practically everywhere) it’s no social mixing... wasn’t expecting that, have various meet ups arranged next week.

50 seems low for tier 3, something else I read suggested over 100 for tier 2. I am also wondering how they will define areas, the rates there are reported at district level, but surely you would need to go by county to stop it being too confusing. And if you drop below again, would you then be moved to a different tier? What if you keeping bumping up and down over the threshold? In small population areas a few cases can make a big difference to the rate

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 10/10/2020 13:09

We're between 50 and 100 and I cant see we'll move from hardly any restrictions to closing pubs and bars. The news seems to think thats more for the northern towns?

I cant see they'd ban mixing altogether at under 100 either?

I imagine the papers have been sensationalising it.

But who knows! I hate the uncertainty of it all.

rosesandchips · 10/10/2020 13:09

Just heard on radio government still ‘engaging in discussions’ ie have no bloody idea what they’re doing...

Yep. Its so reassuring isnt it 🙄

SilverOtter · 10/10/2020 13:16

We definitely will be in Tier 3 (Solihull)Sad

cathyandclare · 10/10/2020 13:18

I'm in Leeds council area, although well out of Leeds with pretty low infection levels. We'll be tier 3 for sure.

girlicorne · 10/10/2020 13:18

I m assuming if anyone is tier 3 we will be, in Nottingham. They might just start it at tier 2 for the red areas though? Either way I m prepared for all half term adventures to be off 😀

Mothertocrazy91 · 10/10/2020 13:21

Every where is heading for 100 though right even my small borough in London is at 82 and increased by at least 10 a day in the last week so by Monday we will be at 100. Days average is already 74 or something like that !

rosesandchips · 10/10/2020 13:22

Tbh I think tier 2/3 everywhere seems to be sensible, as tier 1 doesn’t seem to be working at all...

OP posts:
cathyandclare · 10/10/2020 13:26

Are lockdown restrictions working anywhere? It seems like infections are being driven by work and educational environments. The genie is already out of the hat with uni students- closing hospitality will likely encourage more covert mixing.

CoffeeNights · 10/10/2020 13:37

our county is listed and would be tier 3 f over 50. But a major town in the county is also listed and would be tier 2! My town is next door to major town and even less again, so for us to be T3 and them T2 seems Bonkers.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 10/10/2020 13:44

It’s all a distraction from the woeful track and trace system.

We are over three hundred so know we will be tier 3. Already told children that activities may have to move back to zoom just incase its not just pubs/restaurants etc.

Frazzled2207 · 10/10/2020 13:50

I am fully expecting to be in tier 3 (greater Manchester) but I think no decision has been taken yet as to what the threshold is for tier 2/3 nor what that actual restrictions will be.

Flaxmeadow · 10/10/2020 13:51

The link is recent, from 2 days ago, but it's a changing situation day to day, so I expect the government won't know exactly what's happening until just before the announcement on Monday.

ChaChaCha2012 · 10/10/2020 13:52

They might as well give up on test and trace in its current state, it's useless.

I can't believe they've delayed measures until next week. I can only assume that they're thick enough to think they can pause the virus until they make up their minds.

Yes this seems right. Media are reporting as though it’s just increased restrictions for highest areas in north, but if cases are rising exponentially everywhere surely something else has to be done?
OP posts:
ChaChaCha2012 · 10/10/2020 13:56

The Liverpool mayor has said the city will go into tier 3 lockdown, but the government are still trying to work out what those measures will be. The government is refusing to give the scientific rationale behind their decisions.

ChaChaCha2012 · 10/10/2020 13:57

increased restrictions for highest areas in north

The highest area is Nottingham, in the Midlands, not the North!

BarefootHippieChick · 10/10/2020 14:01

I'm Staffordshire and in the red zone so not holding out much hope. Not really going out much anyway but still might have been nice to catch up with friends over half term ☹

rosesandchips · 10/10/2020 14:01

Sorry @ChaChaCha2012 of course you’re right. I just keep seeing headlines about ‘the north’ but it’s a lazy shorthand (and not accurate as you say).

OP posts:
Frazzled2207 · 10/10/2020 14:05

I imagine most of the country will go into the Tier 2 zone and then much/all of the north and some others places the top tier. Here in GM though we’ve had restrictions since the end of July- they flattened a bit but then rose rapidly and are now many many times what they were in July. So I am highly sceptical.

The energy that’s been put into agreeing restrictions should have been going into fixing test and trace itself. It’s been 7 months. Unforgivable that it’s not working properly IMO.

Frazzled2207 · 10/10/2020 14:15

According to the Manchester Evening news, Jamie Driscoll, Mayor of North of Tyne has said that his area (quick google suggests it is Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland) is NOT going into tier 3 - though Liverpool definitely is. I hope that tier 3 is kept for the absolute worst case scenarios. That would probably include us but hopefully give us hope of getting out of it fairly soon. If they put all of the north into tier 3 then frankly we'll be stuck in all winter.
