Are people oblivious to what’s happening in the North?

I keep seeing posts where people are wondering why some people can’t see others, telling them that we’ve been able to meet family and friends for ages now. Do some people not realise that in large areas of the U.K. this isn’t allowed? And that next week it’s going to get worse? I don’t live in these areas but am horrified about what’s happening there and very aware that people are struggling with the isolation.

I really feel for those who are effectively locked down again. But to be honest I’m not dwelling on it as the reality of another lockdown coming is just far too depressing!

The North is demonstrating only too clearly why the restrictions cant be voluntary and need to be enforced - hospitals haveing to cancel other medical care (something people have been whining about on here a lot) because the same people who whine about it wont wear a mask.

Your choice deprives someone else of health care - and although you dont need it today you may need it next week. Xenia thinks she can escape by paying for private health care (and doesnt care about anyone with less money) but that doesnt operate without NHS critical care facilities being available and in the north they soon wont be.

loulouljh · 09/10/2020 11:39

Lockdown is not working. It is not going to work now. The public are not on side. I heard someone from the wHO speaking the other day and he was saying the most important part of any strategy was having the public buy in. The Government do not have it and won't have it.

Alot of press about herd immunity today and how that should have been let build during the Summer months.

loulouljh · 09/10/2020 11:42

Who says students are not safe? They will get the virus..they will be fine!!!!! The face far greater risks than this virus!!!!

loulouljh · 09/10/2020 11:44

and re enforcement, how are you going to do that? You simply cannot make a population do what it doesn't want to! There are not enough police to make people follow rules they don't agree in. Matt Hancock can jump u and down as much as he likes and threaten this, that and the other. But if people don't want to follow the rules they will not. It is that simple. We do not thank goodness live in a police state. Yet.

Bloomburger · 09/10/2020 11:55

I'm shocked at the amount of people flouting the rules in these high risk areas. I'm in one of the lowest risk areas in the country and most people are being compliant.

Why are t these people taking care and trying to stop the spread?

MagpieSong · 09/10/2020 12:30

@Devlesko

All this hospital stuff is bollocks too. No nurses that I know, and that's several working across the NW, plus some surgeons and doctors have reported any increase in admissions for anything, let alone covid. They report being at a loose end often as most of their work on hold/ cancelled because of covid. The propaganda is ridiculous.
That’s interesting, I’ve had the opposite experience talking to my nurse/doc friends. They’re not in the same area, mind you. The only people who I know who are at more a loose end are those in physio/OT/similar but not redeployed. The others who’ve been working and are working with Covid patients have seen a worrying increase and are really shattered and worn down, some of them worry they won’t cope emotionally this time round from the stress and exhaustion, the trauma of patients dying without relatives around them and the whole experience really. One nurse graduated her course early to have a baptism of fire, only to find her paid position was cut early. She’s a single parent too and quite financially stretched. I would have expected those in the NW to feel the same, so surprised to hear they aren’t worried and are at a loose end. I do know paramedics who said they aren’t getting the calls, which worries them, so they’ve felt at a loose end. Since the pubs opened they’ve had a few more call outs, but some still seem to be getting less related to non covid issues.

I suppose it makes sense to have some feeling at a loose end though, when you think of how much isn’t open or running to fill capacity. We don’t have a GP surgery open (have to go to next village - not great for the elderly and disabled, especially if have no car), many services aren’t running fully or are based miles away at a distant private hospital and if half a team is redeployed the rest can’t really do the norm without them. Something the government is pretty silent on is the nightingale hospitals that have no staff to make them able to function as a covid hospital.

Really? Is that why one of the largest hospitals in West Yorkshire (BRI) is now telling people to stay away unless it's urgent because they are receiving a high volume of new covid patients

The80sweregreat · 09/10/2020 13:09

I do keep reading how hospitals are not full up and the staff are bored. Where is this coming from? I saw a bbc report late last night and the hospital in Bournemouth was busy enough and more beds were being made available for covid.
They were not sitting about.
Its reports like this that fuel the conspiracy theories and make people wonder what is going on?..

ConfusedcomMum · 09/10/2020 13:48

There was a whole thread on here the other day by HCPs discussing how they're seeing in their hospitals what they saw in March all over again. Some of them even talked about quitting.

The80sweregreat · 09/10/2020 13:53

I just saw on the news that the R rate is coming down a bit so that is good news. It's not perfect , but that is a tiny bit of positivity amongst the gloom.

Plus they can pass it on to more vulnerable people

bibbitybobbitycats · 09/10/2020 16:02

Sadiq Khan said earlier today that more restrictions are likely to be brought in in London.

RedToothBrush · 09/10/2020 16:10

Merseyside now has the third worst infection rate in Europe behind only Madrid and the Estonian region of Ida-Viru.

Three hospitals in the NW have put out alerts this week to 'stay away' and 'only go to A&E if you absoluetely have to' checking with 111 first.

Looking at the numbers there are predictions there will be a bed problem that will hit Liverpool first. Shortly followed by Knowsley and probably Halton and Warrington. Anyone who is familiar with the geography of the area, knows that if all four hospitals hit capacity at the same time there's going to be some real issues given where else nearby is getting close to problems with capacity.

There are some real logistical issues here and risk of a major incident which didn't exist in the same with London at the April peak.

There is a lower number of beds per head of population for starters.

  • it needs to be 'from tomorrow you will need to wear a mask

Then they need to provide them. A local homeless woman had to pick up and use a discarded mask off the street so she could access food and medicine.

annabel85 · 09/10/2020 17:47

Madrid was one of the worst hit cities in the first wave as well.

I live in Bradford and have been offered bottles of hand sanitiser and masks by council employees on the street in town several times. Also seen them outside our local supermarkets.
HeIenaDove · 09/10/2020 18:27

AFAIK that hasnt happened here. Tory stronghold.

clareykb · 09/10/2020 18:29

I'm in the north east and from what I see where I live compliance with masks etc is pretty high. The worst people I know for that kind of thing are our family in the south west.

Umbridge34 · 09/10/2020 18:36

I'm not sure how often they're doing it. It may be entirely a coincidence that the handful of times I've been in town Ive seen them. It should certainly be widespread imo. I didn't take a mask or hand sanitizer since I already had some but for those that haven't its a useful service.
HeIenaDove · 09/10/2020 18:40

@Umbridge34 Totally agree.

Africa2go · 09/10/2020 18:58

@Devlesko Not sure which area of the NW you're talking about but significant increase in admissions in this part of NW. Last 2 weeks have seen big increases in Covid ICU admissions too.

Devlesko · 09/10/2020 19:11

Sorry I don't buy into it. There are lots more cases of course, every Tom, Dick and Harry is having a test if they can get one. Whether they have symptoms or not. God knows why.
I sort of stop believing the propaganda after this.
I have no bat shit theory, sorry to disappoint
