Are people oblivious to what’s happening in the North?

I keep seeing posts where people are wondering why some people can’t see others, telling them that we’ve been able to meet family and friends for ages now. Do some people not realise that in large areas of the U.K. this isn’t allowed? And that next week it’s going to get worse? I don’t live in these areas but am horrified about what’s happening there and very aware that people are struggling with the isolation.

@Helenj1977

I'm in the South West. I still don't know anyone who has had it. Everyone here wears masks and a few wear gloves while shopping.

I don't see how they can keep locking down areas. Surely it's all or nothing or people won't do it.

Same, I’m in the south west, there has been the odd case a couple local schools but I don’t know anyone personally who has tested positive. I have a relative who has been contacted through track and trace to isolate but she’s the first I know of here. I think cases are on the rise here but nothing like up north. I do feel for those in the restriction areas and I think until the pubs/bars/ restaurants are closed people will continue to mingle. Of course the economy is going to take a huge hit but things should be out in place to protect them.

People need to be more sensible, although everything is open here people are mostly being sensible and not going out when it’s busy.

There are many on my Facebook (in other areas) that keep moaning that the government are not doing enough then they are posting photos of their whole family sat in a restaurant or pub? People seem to lack common sense.

Flibbitygibbit · 09/10/2020 07:37

Am in Leicester. We have never been out of lockdown. Cases seem to be on the up again. I have totally stuck to the rules. Feels like it's never going to end ...however will do my bit so me and mine don't get it.

Pelleas · 09/10/2020 07:37

What's needed is clarity and consistency - not dozens of different local lockdowns with slight variations in the rules. And the government needs to act more quickly - not all this 'from a week on Friday you will need to wear a mask' - it needs to be 'from tomorrow you will need to wear a mask'.

I am not saying the entire country should be under a strict lockdown - but that there should be no more than two states - locked down or not locked down - with clear and enforced rules about what can be done in either.

Hippopotas · 09/10/2020 07:39

My family is in Leicester I haven’t seen them since March

RationalOne · 09/10/2020 07:39

Well reading the comments it sums up why there is a problem 'up North' and also in the largest populated areas in other parts of the country (Cardiff etc).

RationalOne · 09/10/2020 07:40

Exeter University has a spike of cases now - along with other universities. This will gradually spread out if people don't bother to comply

OhTheRoses · 09/10/2020 07:41

Where we live rates are now low. About two or three weeks ago they whizzed up from 8 to 137. Over the last few days they have reduced to 71. Zoe App which also has estimated lots more cases than the ONS for several weeks now. About 22k across the country.

MIL is in the north. From mid March to July when dh could form a bubble with her she didn't see a family member. She is 84. Pre lockdown she went to luncheon club on Mondays, Ramblers on Tuesdays, Drama Group Weds, Hairdressers Thurs, Book Club Friday - shopping Sauturday, church Sunday.

In the last few months dementia has really taken hold, she has been to the police station about a variety of things: spiders in the bath, dripping tap, etc., social services have been contacted because she is regarded as a vulnerable adult, carers are now going in twice a day.

Vicarious impact of covid.

Benjispruce2 · 09/10/2020 07:42

Yes I know. We’re south midlands but DD at uni in NE cooped up in a house with online lectures.

x2boys · 09/10/2020 07:43

I'm also in Bolton I still don't think people are taking it seriously enough ,from my experience anyway ,my son has already had to self isolate for two weeks due to a few kids in his bubble at his school in Bolton testing positive ,I feel for business owners pubs etc only opened last Saturday and now they are going to have to close again our rates of infection are the highest they have ever been apparently 😪

So true, there seems to be more cases in the towns here, I am rural and it’s pretty hard not to comply with the rules here, the local pubs have pretty strict rule, people are not going out drinking, if you eat out you have to book a time slot and be out of the pub after 2 hours. In the towns is much different. Case are going to be high where you have big groups of people together such as uni’s, pubs, bars etc..
Benjispruce2 · 09/10/2020 07:45

Among my DD friends that are positive there are zero symptoms so unless they happen to get a test they are walking infections. Universities need to test everyone now!

NichyNoo · 09/10/2020 07:46

It’s annoying as we’re in the Wirral so classed as part of Merseyside and in local lockdown. However rates are low in my town and surrounding area, people all wear masks and comply with the rules but because other parts of Merseyside have high rates, we’re included in the lockdown.

Tomatoesneedtoripen · 09/10/2020 07:46

so many mask wearers here in the southeast,
getting off the train everyone was wearing a mask, even in the shopping precinct.
all secondary school kids on the buses, wearing masks.

Yesyoudoknowme · 09/10/2020 07:49

Was in Wigan the other day and there were 3 security guards standing by the doors of the mall, right by the sign that states masks must be worn. People were going in without them and the guards said nothing. If it's not their job then fine, but why have them on the doors? We were out and about, Wigan, Newcastle, Nottingham etc over the last few weeks and the amount of people not wearing masks - or worse still wearing them over their mouths but not nose was unbelievable! Really not surprised they are continually being locked down. Where I live (SE) people are (generally) more compliant.

Completely agree , I'm in greater Manchester and having to hear in the media that the hospitality is closing on Monday is disgusting. The government clearly give no shits for the working class .
We need a plan the only plan they have is how much is going to cost them to close industries down they don't give a shut about peoples livelihood.
We have been in local lockdown for 2 months which started off 20 odd but now 500 + per 100,000 and it's only going to get worse as we get into winter.
Total chaos and a farce this government need to go .

Tomatoesneedtoripen · 09/10/2020 07:50

i have family who are planning to meet the rest of the family for the weekend in a cottage, despite knowing they mustnt mix households, they are doing it anyway!
i guess they think they are special

Codexdivinchi · 09/10/2020 07:52

People have been in local lock downs for months with cases in the area still climbing exponentially.

It doesn’t work. There is zero evidence that it works. And we should absolutely not go in to a full lockdown again.

Pippioddstocking · 09/10/2020 07:54

In the south here. Everyone wearing masks in shops, and on buses, social distancing where they can. Still cleaning down trollies before you touch them in the supermarket and dancing around each other in the isle to maintain a 2 m gap if possible.
Nobody I know has had it. I haven't come across any rule breakers yet although of course, we have only a few rules at present.

uggmum · 09/10/2020 07:58

I love in the North. We are not in local lockdown yet but it's just a matter of time.

I follow the rules. So many people don't. People in shops without a mask. A large percentage of people wearing it under their nose.

I was in Iceland yesterday. The assistant was wearing a mask but under her nose. So if she is infected droplets from her nose could be all over my shopping.

If you don't wear it properly, then don't wear it at all.

It's just going to get worse as winter arrives. It's all concerning.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/10/2020 08:00

I'm in the North East.

People are wearing masks - very few in shops etc who aren't. I don't know many people who are ignoring the mixing rules, either, even as regards family. Only mixing indoors with people who are "bubbling".

My son and DIL wished me a happy birthday from the end of the drive and we had a 10 minute conversation in the driving rain. My present was left on the doorstep and I sanitised it.

I do think thought hat those people who genuinely CAN'T wear a mask should have to wear a visor - then there is no room for argument . And I also think that Our Beloved Leader should lead by example - everyone in parliament should be wearing masks and obeying the travel and social distancing rules - when people like Johnson senior - horrible man - and Cummings break what are supposed to be strict regulations with impunity, then THAT is what makes people think that it isn't as bad as they are making out.

For what it's worth - I think it IS bad. I'm a licensed funeral minister. I've had funeral directors contact me about four services already this week (normally I'd get that many in 6 months or so).

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/10/2020 08:05

The government clearly give no shits for the working class

Indeed they don't.

Russellbrandshair · 09/10/2020 08:06

I’m in the south. Of course I’m aware of what’s happening in the north but WTF are you expecting us to do about it?! We are all wearing masks here and abiding by the rules despite the fact that cases where I am are very low. I’m not really sure what the point of your OP is- it’s not our choice whether another lockdown happens is it? What exactly are you expecting other areas to do differently?

NannyMcphee39 · 09/10/2020 08:06

No one follow someone the rules and I’m in Greater Manchester.

Ive followed them but feel increasingly resentful towards the many friends who claim ‘ well I don’t understand the rules’. These are intelligent people and it’s broadcast continually on local radio and literally everywhere.

It would take the army to keep them in and obeying the rules

PrtScn · 09/10/2020 08:08

@Ihatemyseleffordoingthis

I'm sick of the finger pointing and assumptions re compliance. Re geographies and demographics.

But more than that, should this continue, I just don't think young people will ever forgive the older generations

Young people blame old people for everything anyway, so no change there. I can’t buy a house - boomers fault, I can’t get a job, boomers fault (I mean how dare old Mavis get a job in B&Q when unemployment among young people is so high!).
kirinm · 09/10/2020 08:08

@lotusbell

I'm in Lancashire. 2 weeks ago, our local police force posted a reminder on Facebook about local rules and a woman commented "I'm in (insert name of Lancashire village), does this apply to me?" Her excuse for asking was that she'd been working shifts and hadn't seen the news Hmm. At the time, there was only Blackpool not included.and she didn't live in Blackpool.
Stanley Johnson uses a similar excuse and that seems to keep him out of trouble.
