Corbyn trumps Cummings

Jeremy Corbyn ensures continued spread of coronavirus by attending non-socially distanced dinner party for 9.

Well at least it’s not just the Tories who think the rules don’t apply to them but seriously, what the hell were these people thinking?
Presumably they thought it they would get away with it until someone took the photo!!

Meanwhile I’m here explaining to my son why his friend can’t come over anymore Angry

Still doesn’t justify anyone else breaking the rules though!

I’m not sure ‘trumps’ is quite right. We are not at the same level we were in March. The social response is now not what it was at all. When Cummings did what he did, vast swathes of the public were literally bunkered down and terrified, and genuinely believed that we had to stay at home to save lives. People were making plans for what they’d do if they became too unwell to look after tiny children, because asking a relative to come into their home was a no-go. People were only going for one walk a day and not visiting elderly relatives they loved and supported otherwise, for fear of breaking the rules they’d been told were so critically life-saving.
Whether we agree or disagree with Corbyn now breaking the guidelines, or we agree or disagree with public response to lockdown etc. What Cummings did was worse, because the spirit of the public at that time had been very much pushed to be terrified and sacrificial for the greater good. And yet here roll the tories doing what the fuck they like. It created masses of people suddenly thinking that it must be over hyped , not that dangerous, and that it was one rule for us and another for them etc etc. The fact Boris backed him on it only solidified that public response.

The fact we are now all so bored of the ‘Cummings effect’ being mentioned, is quite frightening to me actually. They knew this would happen. He backed him because he knew that the British public would throw their tantrum but eventually if they just dug their heels in, the public would get bored of moaning about it, and if they could ignore the contempt long enough we would all just get sick of mentioning it.

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 01/10/2020 08:13

What Cummings did was definitely worse but both Jeremy Corbyn and Stanley Johnson who didn’t wear a face covering in a shop should both be fined in accordance with the law as any other member of the public would be.

SquishySquirmy · 01/10/2020 08:19

Stupid of him.
Cummings was worse though.

It is a stupid, pointless game of top Trumps anyway.

Buckwheat80 · 01/10/2020 08:20

I didn't realise it was a competition. They both broke the rules and both have contributed the cynicism and lack of trust the public have in politicians, both generally and on this issue.

NotAKaren · 01/10/2020 08:37

They are just representative of the population as a whole. No big surprise there.

Gobacktothe90s · 01/10/2020 08:41

There's also Stanley Johnson shopping without a face mask who claims since being on holiday for 3 weeks and just getting back to UK he doesn't know the rules Hmm

KetoPenguin · 01/10/2020 08:43

Corbyn isn't one of the top (unelected) policy makers, very involved in making the rules.

noblegiraffe · 01/10/2020 08:46

Piers Corbyn is more of a covid liability than his brother right now.

Jeremy is now basically irrelevant.

Parkrunmum · 01/10/2020 09:07

It's nowhere near as bad or anything like as what Cummings did.

Anyway, Jeremy Corbyn is a nobody. Cummings is a government adviser.

Itsabeautifuldayheyhey · 01/10/2020 09:17

There's also Stanley Johnson shopping without a face mask who claims since being on holiday for 3 weeks and just getting back to UK he doesn't know the rules hmm
That is nowhere near as bad as thousands of protestors failing to wear masks and social-distance because they don't agree with the measures.

Jeremy Corbyn was like a rabbit in the headlights when he realised his photo was being taken precisely because he knew he was doing wrong. I don't believe realisation just dawned in that moment.

I wonder who released the photo of JC at that dinner? Presumably not in his friendship group now.

Mrsjayy · 01/10/2020 09:22

Dominic Cummings made the slogan "coached" Boris in all aspects of prime ministering went on his holiday mid lockdown and then had the audacity to hold a press conference Jeremy Corbyn meh

Parkrunmum · 01/10/2020 09:22

I wonder who released the photo of JC at that dinner? Presumably not in his friendship group now.

That's what I'm wondering. Why did the person taking the photo release it?

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 01/10/2020 09:27

Corbyn and Johnson both apologised, a fine would be appropriate even though both could easily afford it as it sends the right message, also the rest of the dinner party should be fined.

Thinkingg · 01/10/2020 09:36

Corbyn broke the rules. Which was stupid, and not responsible for someone in a position of power. I expected better of him.

Cummings broke the rules with his wife who had symptoms after spending time with Boris who had just been diagnosed with covid. They must of known it was highly likely they had coronavirus, and should have been self isolating - not doing so is actively dangerous. Plus he was the one who wrote the rules. I think his action is worse.

Shakespearsister · 01/10/2020 09:39

Cummings isn't an anti-semite though, is he !.

Itsabeautifuldayheyhey · 01/10/2020 09:42

Presumably the person who released the photo of Jeremy Corbyn and co was either present or it was passed on to them by someone who was present.

You never know who you can and can't trust.

PicsInRed · 01/10/2020 09:52

You never know who you can and can't trust

...when you're breaking the laws others are expected to follow.

Some are more equal than others, eh?

myrtilles · 01/10/2020 10:06

This is not on the scale of Cummings but still infuriating.

How many households are present at Corbyn's dinner party? Looks like at least 3, yet those of us with kids can't even meet one other family for a meal (on assumption average family has 2 children)

I wonder if there are any politicians who have actually stuck to the rules we are all being asked to adhere to.

MummyPop00 · 01/10/2020 10:44

Politicians are sometimes hypocrites no matter what colour of rosette they wear shocker

MRex · 01/10/2020 10:52

He's not as bad as his brother, who's actively encouraging people to think it's all a conspiracy theory. Public fines are helpful, Stanley Johnson too. Ignorance of the law is no excuse.

Mrsjayy · 01/10/2020 10:56

Corbyns brother is batshit! I saw the photo on TV and I think arrogance. Is the pain event at the dinner party .Corbyn and chums think they are above the rules.

Qasd · 01/10/2020 10:59

Also Cummings had the virus which is always the element that to me made his actions so unforgivable...the one time we surely only get isolation is totally necessary is when you are confirmed to actually have it!!

Mrsjayy · 01/10/2020 11:01

Cummings was v v worried about his family though it was a 5 hour mercy drive really the man's a trooper Confused

frozendaisy · 01/10/2020 11:07

Cummings put a possible/he thought they were Covid-19 positive family in a car and drove length of the country at peak lockdown.

Corbyn had dinner with an extra 3 people.

I am not political point scoring but the two actions are vastly different.

bellinisurge · 01/10/2020 11:09

Corbyn is a back bench piece of shit. Cummings is a government adviser.
