It feels like people on MN are willing schools to close

Lots of threads being really negative about schools reopening. These have been largely started by teachers, the latest one being about a gagging order on the BBC. My 2 and every other DC I know are thriving on schools opening again. DS actually stands a chance of doing well and getting back on track with GCSES. DC are happy and animated again. Their teachers have been fantastic, I'm massively impressed. Friends of mine who are secondary teachers are positive and happy to be back teaching in school instead of home learning. I just get a different vibe in RL than on MN about schools. What's the reality?

@Janevaljane

Why on earth would they be the same?!
Isn't nellodee's point obvious?
Nellodee · 05/10/2020 08:43

I’m more concerned about them not opening the windows, as formite spread is a much smaller vector, but yes, I would prefer them to stick to all the meagre protections we have in place.

You are just arguing for the sake of it, aren’t you?

Janevaljane · 05/10/2020 08:46

Not at all. You seem to be saying that people who are not terrified of Covid deliberately don't take precautions? That's a big leap.

If they aren't following school procedures then blame your management team for not enforcing window opening, not individuals.

Nellodee · 05/10/2020 08:51

People who are “terrified” of COVID presumably will be taking precautions, so logic dictates that the ones who don’t take precautions will be the ones who don’t think it’s as serious.

I blame the individuals more than the management team for not enforcing regulations. I am more sympathetic to the management team as their work load has already massively increased and their workforce are professionals who should know better.

@Janevaljane

Schools in the uk won't close because of research in Tamil Nadu.
interesting comment. Lets unpack this.

From that report, it appears to be a very interesting study which provides evidence of transmission in schools.

The place in which the research took place is largely irrelevant, unless you mean to dismiss the scientists because they come from Asia??

Yes, it would be great if the government could adopt measures that take into account emerging scientific evidence of transmission in schools.

No, that doesn't mean schools would have to close (although, if we don't contain transmission well, various difficult outcomes may present themselves).

Sensible measures in schools would help them to stay open for longer/ not need to close. So you would logically be supporting people like @Nellodee if you want schools to stay open.

Yes, there was a really unpleasant undertone to that. I noticed too
