Being denied entry because you dont have the track and trace app?

I haven't downloaded the app due to personal reasons.
I have started hearing stories about people being denied entry to pubs/ restaurants and cafes because they havent got the app.
Is this true?
Now I'm wondering what I'd do if it came into work, or if I'm told its compulsory to have to go to the supermarket?
Pretty sure its not a legal requirement yet.
@Danglingmod because the Bluetooth setting means I am notified if I am standing within 1m of a positive case for too long. Standing next to a man on the bus with an old phone doesn't guarantee me that safety net.
So are you suggesting everyone should update their phones just so you feel happier?

Danglingmod · 27/09/2020 20:45

Yes, I understand about the Bluetooth. My question was: how does having an older phone that you can't afford to upgrade make you selfish??

JamSarnie · 27/09/2020 20:46
@JamSarnie because you're Bluetooth will pick up other active bluetooth connections while you're there. Once you're home you won't connect with people there after you've left.
But everywhere I have gone all the tables are over 2 meters away and I don't need to isolate in that case. Therefore I still don't see any benefit from having the app.

Carrotgirl87 · 27/09/2020 20:47

@WhentheDealGoesDown1 my personal risk assessment, that more likely to be in contact with more compliant people than in a bar that doesn't enforce any app tracing at all. Each to their own. 🤷🏻‍♀️

StarCat2020 · 27/09/2020 20:47

Is it selfish that I only own an iPhone 6 too?
Having a phone for a while is surely less selfish than getting frequent new handsets?

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 27/09/2020 20:47
@JamSarnie because you're Bluetooth will pick up other active bluetooth connections while you're there. Once you're home you won't connect with people there after you've left.
But you might be the only one that has bothered to keep the Bluetooth tracking on Grin

Carrotgirl87 · 27/09/2020 20:48

@PinkSparklyPussyCat don't know where I said that. Said I will feel safer going out where the app is a necessity. People don't want the app then they can do what they like.

Rudolphian · 27/09/2020 20:48

@ivfbeenbusy

For what "personal" reasons wouldn't you download it??? You just sound petty and silly. Just download the ruddy thing
Whatever my personal reasons there are people who have legitimate reasons. Be it a learning disability, age or just not being able to afford a phone upgrade. Unfortunately for them they aren't able to 'just download the ruddy thing'. From the start the pandemic has affected the most vulnerable disproportionately and this is continuing. If there are businesses that are turning people away because they are confused about 'the rules' then the government needs to clarify them.

Well, my personal risk assessment is that anyone who goes into an inside space to socialise is more likely full stop to be a risk to me, so I'm not. And especially so if they have an expensive phone.

Carrotgirl87 · 27/09/2020 20:51

@WhentheDealGoesDown1 you're right, I might be the only one. But I still stand by the fact I will feel safer knowing it is more likely a stranger testing positive will notify me than in a place that doesn't enforce it. I like that there is choices, places that enforce it for people like me, and places that don't, for those who are against it.

Augustbreeze · 27/09/2020 20:51

I think it's appalling that only those who can afford a certain "class" of phone can use the app.

lyralalala · 27/09/2020 20:51

One of the bars in our village is now requiring ID for all customers as so many people were giving fake details.

I imagine if we had better signal locally they'd probably insist on people having the app.

VivaMiltonKeynes · 27/09/2020 20:52

The idea is simple and all restaurants I have been in since then are using it . If you don't have a phone to do it with then they will take details on paper . I don't know what happens to those bits of paper though . I am happy to use the app , I don't believe in conspiracy theories and if someone in a place I was in records as positive then it would be good to hear that. Of course the app is voluntary and has its obvious limitations . Everyone just needs to try and do their bit.

lillylemons · 27/09/2020 20:53

I don't have a phone to download the app and won't be getting one that can I will just have a avoid places that need it to be used.

Mum2jenny · 27/09/2020 20:54

I’ve been told by work not to download this app as I work in an area with Covid positive ppl so it’d say I had to isolate all the time! So I am not downloading it for anyone!

Enoughnowstop · 27/09/2020 20:56

@Carrotgirl87. And what of those of us who would like the security of the app but have an iPhone 6? Why is our money not valuable to all these businesses? Why should we be turned away through no fault of our own?

tribpot · 27/09/2020 20:57

@Mum2jenny the advice to staff is to pause the contact tracing function whilst at work, assuming you are either in PPE or the phone isn't with you. Details here.

Sundaypolodog · 27/09/2020 20:57

@SoUtterlyGroundDown don't worry. No need to feel hard done by. I couldn't afford them til I was in my 50's, even though I worked solidly in a professional job. I couldn't afford to buy a house either til I was 50 either

You switch it on and off if you wish - so at work you would not use it but if you went into a restaurant then you would/could.

Oh I don’t feel hard done by at all. To be honest even if I could afford it I wouldn’t buy a new phone when I had a perfectly serviceable old one. Replacing things that work is awful for the environment.

SoUtterlyGroundDown · 27/09/2020 21:00

Thanks for the sympathy about me losing my job though, much appreciated.

Carrotgirl87 · 27/09/2020 21:02

@Enoughnowstop you're the group that I feel bad for, because I agree it should be accessible for more people, and I hope they work on expanding it for you.

BatShite · 27/09/2020 21:03

My phone is an old fashioned brick and I have no plans to pay hundreds for an update, I only use it for calls and texts anyway, no internet use like many so no need to update even if I wanted to!

I wonder how accurate this app is. DH downloaded some steps tracker thing not that long ago and it used to tell him he had taken 20000 steps while he had been in bed with the phone on the kitchen bench!

NicNac85 · 27/09/2020 21:03

@BewilderedDoughnut

but here businesses have paper forms which can be filled in by those who can't use phones

It takes SO long!! If there is a group of six doing this, it's not very fair on all the people queuing behind them is it?

It’s also not very fair if the phone you own isn’t compatible with the app. Do you expect these people not to go out?
PinkSparklyPussyCat · 27/09/2020 21:06

Does everyone in the party have to scan the qr code or give their details now then? I've only ever given my details when I've gone out with DH.
