Would you go on holiday from a lockdown area to a lockdown area?

Just that really! I was due to go on holiday October half term to an area that is in local lockdown, I am also in a local lockdown area. I’m thinking it’s probably best to cancel?

Thanks all, it is haven we are going to which has the coronavirus guarantee of money back.
In local lockdown I was aware that we could travel to go on holiday, I just wondered if other people would, therefore wasn’t been selfish just trying to gage opinion.
It was only my family going so wouldn’t be mixing with anyone, just wondered if people would go or not!

The local lockdown areas in England haven't banned people from leaving or entering the area. A holiday doesn't necessarily involve significant extra risk (eg if you are staying in self-contained accommodation with people your normally live with and travel there by car). For some parts of Wales it is against the law to enter or leave without a reasonable excuse. OP, I think you should abide by the law. If the holiday you are planning is legal, use common sense as to whether it involves significant extra risk. If it doesn't, there is no reason to cancel. Some of the responses on here are nasty and ill-informed.

Fluandseptember · 26/09/2020 11:14

If the rules say you can go, and none of you are ill/isolating/super-vulnerable, then I'd go.

manicinsomniac · 26/09/2020 11:16

I think it depends on where you're going and what you're doing tbh.

Legally, you probably can. Morally, I'd be a bit more wary.

For example, my Mum lives in South Lakeland. NOT an area of local lockdown. It seems like nearly the whole of the North West is in local lockdown. She's surrounded. And also in one of the prettiest parts of the North West. If tourism were to surge there over Half Term I don't see how South Lakeland could avoid ending up in the same state as most other areas in that part of the country. And (I think) a large percentage of the full time residents are elderly. It doesn't seem fair.

But if you wanted to go from, say, Newcastle to Manchester, I don't see what difference it would make.

canigooutyet · 26/09/2020 11:24

Life still has to go on. If it's allowed why not? We cannot put our lives on hold indefinitely.

SirVixofVixHall · 26/09/2020 11:26

In Wales this is not allowed, in England it is. I am not sure of the rules in Scotland or NI.

gingajewel · 26/09/2020 11:36

I’m going from the West Midlands to Blackpool.

And (I think) a large percentage of the full time residents are elderly. It doesn't seem fair. The ethos of the "lockdowns" is that most transmission is within private households. So long as people keep themselves to themselves when on holiday, why should the risk be greater than the opposite risk of the collapse of the tourist industry in these areas?

LilyPond2 · 26/09/2020 12:14

What do you plan to do once in Blackpool, OP? I wouldn't personally go on a holiday that involved me spending time indoors in busy places such as pubs and restaurants.

lljkk · 26/09/2020 12:57

I would do what's legally allowed, OP. Sounds to me like it's all within what's allowed, so just do it.

IntoTheDragonsLair · 26/09/2020 13:22

But Blackpool? Find somewhere nicer. Wink

borageforager · 26/09/2020 13:39

manicinsomniac I live in a tourist area & everyone has spent months convinced that tourists returning will infect us, but we still have the lowest numbers in the country after an incredibly busy summer.

Same here

user1471447924 · 26/09/2020 13:49

You CAN, but SHOULD you!? 🤨

Bickles · 26/09/2020 13:52

Yes as long as you’re travelling with your household only it is allowed.
We went from a lockdown area to Somerset in the summer, it was lovely. We followed the rules re distancing etc once we were there.

luckylavender · 26/09/2020 14:08

If you're in Wales it's not in the rules.

SirVixofVixHall · 26/09/2020 14:30

I think they may ban it in England too. Staying local helps minimise viral spread.

gingajewel · 26/09/2020 16:06

@LilyPond2 once we are in our caravan we can go to the beach, go for walks, go to the pleasure beach. My girls love Blackpool lol! We are along way from the sea where we are so they absolutely love a beach!
I am all within guidelines and just didn’t know what to do morally, I was asking for opinions on that, but the goady and vile people on this thread who would rather have us locked in our houses 24/7 have made me realise people will judge whatever I do so I may aswell make my kids happy!
Thankyou for everyone that responded!

@IntoTheDragonsLair 🤣🤣 that’s how I feel about Blackpool too but my children love it there!!!

True. But that was over the summer when numbers were low everywhere and most people were doing things outside. Not sure it would be the same if lots of people from high infection rate areas visit low infection places like South Lakes and Cornwall in Autumn/Winter and do a lot more indoor things?

Toothsil · 26/09/2020 17:53

Some people aren't being very nice in their responses...

We live in a lockdown area and people are still coming here on holiday. The caravan parks are still open. As far as I know, the only rule is that people can't mix households.

AmelieTaylor · 26/09/2020 18:09

I don't think travel out of the area should be allowed myself, but I don't get to make the rules (most of you will be pleased about that I'm sure!!)

@gingajewel

I'm not happy to stay elsewhere right now, so no I wouldn't.

However, you've booked it, so you obviously don't feel the same. So in YOUR situation then yes I would, but I'd be very careful & go to the pleasure beach when it wasn't so busy, wear masks & use lots of hand sanitiser. I'd do takeaways rather than eat inside places and I'd focus more on the beach & that kind of thing.

Obviously, if possible, I'd go by car & not stop en route.

gingajewel · 26/09/2020 19:24

@AmelieTaylor I booked this holiday in February! It’s my final payment this week and then we went into local lockdown this week and then the place we are travelling went into lockdown in the past few days!
We will spend a lot of time out doors! We aren’t one for pubs etc and as we love two hours ish to the nearest beach it’s all about the seaside for my children!

OP posts:
WorriedMummy2020 · 26/09/2020 21:08

I'm assuming you're in England as in Wales you can't leave a local lockdown area to go on holiday elsewhere.

England's lockdowns aren't exactly strict are they?

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 26/09/2020 21:39

Well it is really not a lockdown is it? I mean, the pubs are open, early doors.

The restrictions say you can go. The restrictions do not even "advise against". You won't be mingling households. I don't see why you shouldn't go.
