My school has no ppe, we have a cleaner wiping touch points all through the day. We have antibacterial hand-wash and sanitiser, but it still isn't compulsory for us to wear masks/face shields. Two weeks in to us starting back and I'm off sick waiting for a home test and I've been trying to get hold of one for the past 2 days and all I am getting is this. Come back later, what when I'm calling an ambulance or dead. So much for having key workers as a priority. University lecturers are making students wear masks and so are they but us teachers are being completely forgotten. If you want your children to have an education, you need to protect and look after the teachers! Boris you have failed me!

@CayrolBaaaskin I have heart disease (from another virus), spikey blood pressure and lung problems. If I get it I am at v high risk. But nice to know you can tell me I'll be fine. Thanks.

Useruseruserusee · 23/09/2020 21:22

It’s been just under a month. We are both teachers here and DHs school is completely closed for a week due to staff outbreak. It’s called a staff outbreak as staff have been able to get tested but most pupils haven’t - many are reporting symptoms but unable to find out if it is Covid.

I have a bubble colleague isolating, tested on Monday 8am and awaiting a result that was supposed to take 24 hours. She seems pretty ill; could be Covid or could be another virus that is making her cough. If it is Covid we are all still in mixing and due to the nature of my job (SLT) I have also covered in two other year groups. One of these year groups is EYFS so I was completely unable to distance.

And we have an ECV toddler at home as well.

Cookiecrisps · 23/09/2020 21:23

@alwayslosing if it really was ‘all about the teachers’ then we wouldn’t be back working in these conditions.

School staff predicted what a mess this September was going to be months ago and many posters told them they were lazy, didn’t want to work and that they didn’t care about the children.

I think the staff are the glue keeping everything together in schools at the moment trying to make the children feel safe. School staff wouldn’t do that if they were making it all about themselves.

mumsneedwine · 23/09/2020 21:24

@Useruseruserusee I'm with you. I'm in 6 bubbles of over 300 each. Not a clue what happens if I'm positive. Think I could shut the school.

Useruseruserusee · 23/09/2020 21:26

I know, guidance says SLT can enter any bubble. So I’m covering a lot, which I don’t mind doing at all - I like covering and there is no one else to do it. But if I get a positive test, it’s a real issue for the school.

A very sweeping statement @cayrolbaaaskin, you don't know mine, this poster or anyone else's medical history.

@alwayslosing

Well I wasn't going to respond but I got a notification...damn...you miss out the point ... unfortunately it's shit for everyone for others is worse as they have no income as they lost their jobs. I'm not even going to bring up the hospitality staff that can't afford to pay their rent/mortgages because they don't have a job to go to.

And yet it's all about the teachers and how unsafe they feel having a job to go to

It's very sad that you lot mumsnetters don't see it. I'm tired of hearing about teachers on the radio/tv constantly. As I said before get over it.

You don’t sound too happy in yourself. Also a top tip, turn off notifications. It’s just Mumsnet. I never get any because mine are switched off, even tags. You are rather over invested in being hateful. That’s sad.
deflationexasperation · 23/09/2020 21:32

Sorry if it's been mentioned but how are school closures or cases being reported?
I suppose they are being reported, and we get a clear picture as to what's going on?

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 23/09/2020 21:32

@CayrolBaaaskin

Tbh I doubt you will be dead or calling an ambulance even if u get COVID. Its more likely you will get it and show no symptoms at all than you will die.
More likely for some but not those with underlying conditions

I'm not SLT but I'm teaching years 7-11, that's 125 kids. Then all of my colleagues are now in the staff room on their free periods as the year bubbles are using their rooms as breakout rooms. It has not been well thought through, the kids may as well not be in bubbles if their teachers aren't and we could be the ones to spread it.

@alwayslosing

Oh really? I thought it was about you and how unsafe you feel going to work. Your posts didn't show much empathy towards those poor children.

But then again it's all about the teachers

And with this I say : Good night 🙏🏻

Do you say prayers?

I am really worried. I teach secondary school, and I am 34 weeks pregnant. I teach up to 150 students a day, none of which wear a mask :(

Others may disagree but in my opinion if you are stressed, get signed off. You need to be healthy mind and body wise for you and your baby. X

Or see if you can start your mat leave early. Sorry I hadn't thought of that when I posted x

Two days ago my dc year bubble was asked to leave the school because a child (Y9) had tested positive for coronavirus. Today we got an email admitting the result was actually negative and the entire year can return to school tomorrow. Hmm

pastandpresent · 23/09/2020 22:30

alwayslosing, I think you are totally missing a point. Teachers need to be safe. Otherwise school will close. It's going to affect so many children and parents. It's not the same as if you gets it and need to take days off work.
I'm not a teacher, just a parent. But I can totally see why teachers are worried.

CarpeVitam · 23/09/2020 22:46

@ivfbeenbusy

Yawn

I'd like to know how many children have actually infected another child whilst at school or indeed infected their teacher. Bet the numbers are minuscule

BiscuitBiscuitBiscuit
Bluelinings · 23/09/2020 22:48

Carpe

Last week there were 122 outbreaks in schools involving children passing it on.

Bluelinings · 23/09/2020 22:50

Sorry Carpe that was got Ivebeen not you.

notanoctopus · 24/09/2020 00:00

You have been failed. I'm not a teacher, but yes teachers have been thrown to the wolves. It's beyond disgusting. Wanting kids to be back at school as normal, doesn't mean it is viable in their current form, despite the minor changes to make them 'Covid-secure'. With the testing situation, it's a crying shame. I'm not a teacher but I think teachers as a minimum should be allowed to wear masks to teach and ask children to do the same, unless they are exempt obviously. It's shit, but so is the current situation. Hands, face, space ... yeah, right.

Zandra123 · 24/09/2020 00:30

I'm not a teacher but work two hours a day supporting teachers over lunch time. I'm mid fifties and diabetic and really don't know if I can carry on much longer, I don't feel safe at all. There's staff having to swap bubbles due to shortages of staff, bubbles already burst and classes sent home. A child tested positive with no symptoms at

This is my 20th year doing the job, I've enjoyed it, the money has been my own little spending fund and I'll miss my colleagues and the kids, my mind goes from panic to convincing myself the risk is tiny. I really don't know what to do.

Vivana · 24/09/2020 00:42

The government do not care for anyone be it retail workers or teachers etc

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 24/09/2020 00:58

The whole government response has been awful BUT it is also up to your employer to keep you safe.

Yes the kids at my school appear completely oblivious to the fact there is a pandemic and touch each other as much as before but SLT have put everything possible in place, every staff member has been provided with a visor to wear, it's mandatory in communal areas and many wear them to teach, masks can be worn as well if not teaching from the front and doing smaller group work. Visors aren't perfect but are reassuring when trekking from one side of the school to another with stairwells full of students. We have hand sanitiser wall mounted around school as well as a bottle in every classroom along with wipes to clean keyboards and extra tissues etc. Yes it's the government's fault but employers need to be held responsible too. I've never been so glad to be a member of a MAT, as it has meant the school can pull from their finances to provide us with some PPE.

onanotherday · 24/09/2020 01:19

Most independent schools have continued to carry on as usual with all "normal" educational activities since 23 March 2020.

State schools should learn from the independent sector, to see how they do it.

Half the class sizes and funding. I also read that schools such as Eton tested all children and staff....doubt many of our comps. Will get this🙄

OpheliasCrayon · 24/09/2020 11:29

@Vivana

They definitely didn't care about NHS staff enough to make sure they had the right ppe.

You're not quite right though that they don't care for anyone.... They care about people who want to go hunting....
