I'm a teacher and Boris you have failed us

My school has no ppe, we have a cleaner wiping touch points all through the day. We have antibacterial hand-wash and sanitiser, but it still isn't compulsory for us to wear masks/face shields. Two weeks in to us starting back and I'm off sick waiting for a home test and I've been trying to get hold of one for the past 2 days and all I am getting is this. Come back later, what when I'm calling an ambulance or dead. So much for having key workers as a priority. University lecturers are making students wear masks and so are they but us teachers are being completely forgotten. If you want your children to have an education, you need to protect and look after the teachers! Boris you have failed me!

As a parent, I’m so angry about the way teachers have been treated. It’s wrong. I think there will be repercussions down the line but that doesn’t help now. I think you’re all beyond brilliant.

ParlezVousWronglais · 23/09/2020 00:54

I'm a teacher and Boris you have failed us.
I’m a preacher and like Christ you have nailed us.
I’m a creature and with lockdown you have jailed us.
Like a train with no track you derailed us.

I’m a teacher, and Boris you have failed us.

Bluelinings · 23/09/2020 00:55

@Itisasecret

This is why schools will close. The head in the sand brigade on Mumsnet think if they say, ‘schools must stay open‘, then they will. No staff = no school. We’ve only just begun and that’s why Boris hinted at school closures tonight. They know.
Yes. They think believing in school fairy dust will make it all ok. The real world isn’t like that.
SistemaAddict · 23/09/2020 00:55

It's appalling op. School provided me with two tests for dc this week as I could t get hold of any. Could your school give you a test from the ones they get given? I don't know the criteria but surely staff would be allowed to use them if need be? I hope you feel better soon and that things improve at school Thanks

H0Tcarrots · 23/09/2020 00:57

I’m sorry that you’re in this situation.

Has the school been able to secure any additional tests for you? I believe it’s been possible to order these as a priority from the end if last week but I don’t know if that’s been successful.

NewnameNelly · 23/09/2020 00:57

@nsa2103 I know it's late, but don't comment if you haven't read previous comments. My school will NOT allow us to wear masks or shields in classes due to the pupils possibly feeling anxious. I have my own, on me constantly, do you think this post is about me being cheap and refusing to part with a pound for a bloody mask... It isn't! I'm not feeding anymore 'teacher hating I can't bloody read' trolls anymore.

I completely agree that this is madness and I so feel for teachers right now. I am also so tired of disappointing my daughter who was so excited to return to school but came down with a fever three days later and has now been in isolation for 13 days. I worry how little time she will have at school once she is back before this happens again. And I disappoint her again. I wonder if she would have been happier at home not having her hopes dashed again and again. I think the idea of using offices is great, smaller bubbles would be great, PPE would be to and fast turn around on tests. Otherwise how can this work.

NewnameNelly · 23/09/2020 00:59

@bercows thanks for your comment, I'm going to ask my head tomorrow and explain I've been unsuccessful at getting one. X

Same here, I am missing being at school so much this week. I love being around the children, everyday I come home with something I've learnt from them. I have always wanted to teach, but I can only do this if I'm well and so are my students. I hope your DH is feeling better soon x

Wow - try and give a balanced answer and that's the reply! Shock

I did read your original post, I didn't say anywhere that you weren't washing hands etc I simply said everyone needs to be vigilant in doing this.

I am a key worker. I am a nurse. I work with incredibly vulnerable frail older people. It also took me 3days to get my symptomatic 3year old son tested 2 weeks ago. But do you know what? We isolated so no one was at risk, and by day 4 we had the results - for better than 2 full weeks. So you might want to fact check that everyone else is getting something you are not. We have a plastic apron gloves and a mask for close personal contact. The point is that on a regular prolonged basis you are not doing this and therefore the risks have been weighed up.
Yes you should have PPE available if there are symptomatic children you need to deal with etc and this is completely right.

Please don't post if your only willing to take the replies that are completely agreeable with your opinion.

NewnameNelly · 23/09/2020 01:09

You have PPE, I have PPE which I have bought myself. YOU have to wear PPE, I am not allowed to wear the PPE I have bought to protect myself. This is the crux of what I'm saying, because schools like mine as waiting on the powers that be to say this is compulsory. This is where I am being failed and so are my colleagues.

You are a key worker and you and your family should have had the tests ASAP. As should I. This is my point.

Separately, I can post what I want and when I want.

OP posts:
NewnameNelly · 23/09/2020 01:12

Actually we are around people on a regular and prolonged basis, this hasn't been weighed up, as children and teachers are getting ill. So please come in to my school and fact check for yourself first hand.

Most independent schools have continued to carry on as usual with all "normal" educational activities since 23 March 2020.

State schools should learn from the independent sector, to see how they do it.

NewnameNelly · 23/09/2020 01:14

Independent schools have half the pupil capacity of state schools. I went to one and teach in the other.

University lecturers are working from home, or at least at my sons uni they are. I think as this second wave sweeps in, teachers need to stand up for themselves and address their own safety in this, tell your Head and your unions and work together, it's not safe for you, the schools should look to remote educate instead.
LomasLongstrider · 23/09/2020 02:03

I read on Twitter that all the children at Eton were tested before they were allowed back. Angry If true.

Lifeisabeach09 · 23/09/2020 02:06

Quite frankly the govt should have enforced universal mask usage for anyone above a certain age along with drumming in the message of social distancing and hand hygiene continuously from the start.
Working from home (for employees), remote/blended learning for students should have been kept/put in place where possible.
Why they thought this wouldn't become and issue in schools, I never know.

Becuna · 23/09/2020 02:12

@SlB09

I don't think teachers are alone or unique in this situation, and I'm sorry you feel so let down. Tests are hard to get for everyone and that is incredibly frustrating. I do think we need to balance our respective risks though and take into account the emotional/psychological impact PPE wearing can have on children alongside the anxiety this may cause some individual adults/professionals. You could very well catch it in a supermarket or other public space, we just all have to muck in and be vigilant with all the other measures and that's the best we can do.
I disagree totally with the statement that teachers are not alone or unique. Working in an office, going on public transport, shopping, we as adults are required to wear masks, teachers have been told not to. They are spending hours in enclosed places with loads of children. The children will get through this.
RepeatSwan · 23/09/2020 02:17

Sorry op. It's s mess and teachers, parents and children have really been let down.

I hope you get a test soon. It doesn't fix anything but it is what we were promised.

Susannahmoody · 23/09/2020 02:32

You just realised?

Itshissister · 23/09/2020 02:52

Hope you feel better soon and you get a test Flowers

Marchitectmummy · 23/09/2020 03:01

I feel for you OP; I have no idea whether the tales of young people being less of a C19 risk is true or not. But if it is able to spread through them, I dont hold much hope for anyone avoiding it.

My girls attend independent schools with 10 to 15 per class. However, 2 of them have already had a cold since being back as have most of the classes and 1 teacher now. In one of the other girls classes 2 children have come down with an infection / virus that has seen both in a high dependency ward. And one came home with nits.

So my point being if C19 is as infectious I don't see how its not going to spread. Clearly for our girls to pick up these issues at school things are passing through the air and they.must all be too close together for nits to transfer.

And these are in pretty spacious rooms with limited numbers of children.
