I'm a teacher and Boris you have failed us

My school has no ppe, we have a cleaner wiping touch points all through the day. We have antibacterial hand-wash and sanitiser, but it still isn't compulsory for us to wear masks/face shields. Two weeks in to us starting back and I'm off sick waiting for a home test and I've been trying to get hold of one for the past 2 days and all I am getting is this. Come back later, what when I'm calling an ambulance or dead. So much for having key workers as a priority. University lecturers are making students wear masks and so are they but us teachers are being completely forgotten. If you want your children to have an education, you need to protect and look after the teachers! Boris you have failed me!

I knew I'll get attacked for my post but get over it and get on with your lives.

In response to the message about the caugh...I got sneezed on by the colleague who sits well less than a meter away from me...

OverTheRainbow88 · 23/09/2020 20:06

There’s nothing wrong with having high expectations of employers especially when it comes to health, you shouldn’t just settle- you don’t want to always be losing when you can fight for change/better

Itisasecret · 23/09/2020 20:07

@alwayslosing

Omg get over yourselves!

You opted for a career that involves teaching a classroom full of children just as the doctors /nurses have opted for a career that involves taking care of the sick.

Why do you think you are above the rest of the population? Why do you think you need special treatment?

We are all in the same boat unfortunately.
I work for a company that couldn't care less about social distancing...masks are not worn etc. When BJ said we should work from home the management came down and said: nobody will work from home. If you don't like it you can leave or take unpaid holiday. Now all the roles in the office can be done from home however they choose to keep us as sardines in a tin.

What can be done about it? Nothing ... because In these uncertain times I need my job.

Now you are all complaining about PPE! Please if you are so nervous about catching this virus either stay at home or buy your own. Why do you need to rely on the gov to take care of each and any one of you individually?

The children need education and interaction with other children. It's unhealthy for them to stay away from education any longer.

Instead of complaining do what you chose to do at the beginning of your career and help these children get through it.

You’ve spectacularly missed the point in that epic rant. Quite some effort. Schools will close if testing isn’t sorted out. That because schools aren’t safe, the virus is spreading and staff and families can’t get tests. No staff = no school. It is that simple, despite the ranting.

For those who don’t want to realise it or are not very good at listening to others. Boris not too subtly brought education closures back on the table last night. They know the issue, they’ve just lied about it. No one wants schools closed, doesn’t mean they won’t.

I'm not going to attack you but I think you need a think about why you are so aggressive.
deflationexasperation · 23/09/2020 20:09

It was jenny harries who said masks weren't not necessary because of the '' measures '' taken in schools eg desks facing forward.
So all dc face forward.

She should get into the classroom and show us how safe it is. Either at the front with 30 mouths breathing on her freely or, crammed in a forward facing desks scheme where incredible humans use their necksto turn and chat to their neighbours.

KittCat · 23/09/2020 20:10

Totally agree with you op...plus everyone else. This lot are a bloody disgrace 😠

deflationexasperation · 23/09/2020 20:10

They need to remove the fines again so people who can, will keep dc at home.
Dh is working from home again tomorrow, the dc could stay off with him.

IHeartKingThistle · 23/09/2020 20:16

Secondary Head of Department here. I feel battered. I think the mental energy it's taking to be peppy and breezy and grown up and not freak the fuck out during the school day is possibly more than I have to give. But I'll do it again tomorrow.

It's not safe. It's just not safe for us. But the kids are not OK, and they need to be in school.

alwayslosing · 23/09/2020 20:26

Well sorry for being aggressive...I'm not like that usually in real life. However all I hear is complaining and I'm well fed up of hearing people complain.

The truth is we will all get it one day no matter how much you moan . Now yes...not all at once hopefully but we will get it.

To answer to a poster below: the reason why I don't fight it is because I don't stand a chance. I'm too small in that company for anyone to miss me if I get sacked so I need to keep my job. This is not Hollywood we can't make up a happy ending.

If all my colleagues stood up together then yes we could sort something out but on my own I don't stand a chance. None of my colleagues want to do anything about it...so

Lifeisabeach09 · 23/09/2020 20:26

You opted for a career that involves teaching a classroom full of children just as the doctors /nurses have opted for a career that involves taking care of the sick.

Teachers and HCPs are getting on with it. Doesn't mean they can't worry about their safety. They, like you, are allowed to vent if they feel unsafe at work and quite rightly so.

When BJ said we should work from home the management came down and said: nobody will work from home

Contact your union (if you have one) or your local newspaper/social media anonymously if you can-shame them!

Now you are all complaining about PPE! Please if you are so nervous about catching this virus either stay at home or buy your own. Why do you need to rely on the gov to take care of each and any one of you individually?

Teachers are buying their own PPE, most schools do not allow them to be worn (except in corridors!) And they cannot just 'stay at home' for obvious reasons.

Teachers are entitled to feel scared, let down, and to have a vent.

Lifeisabeach09 · 23/09/2020 20:29

Why do you need to rely on the gov to take care of each and any one of you individually?

If a person cannot rely on their govt in times of large pandemics, which can cause a shutdown of the economy, infrastructure and cause immense loss of life if left unchecked, when the hell can or should they?!

RepeatSwan · 23/09/2020 20:30

However all I hear is complaining and I'm well fed up of hearing people complain.

I think complaining is natural given how SHIT things are Grin

alwayslosing · 23/09/2020 20:32

Yeah I guess it's shit indeed. It's absolutely ridiculously shit!!!

If teachers continue moaning the schools will get closed and then what??

babyguffingtonstrikesagain · 23/09/2020 20:34

To the pp who said that teachers could just as easily catch it in a supermarket.

Errrr. No. In a supermarket I do not have 30 people in the same poorly-ventilated room for 4+ hours a day, frequently within 10cm of my face, all touching the same stuff and frequently talking at the tops of their voices.

alwayslosing · 23/09/2020 20:34

@Lifeisabeach09 the government will do what's best for the country not for individuals. It's impossible to please everyone. If they succeed on one side they will fail on another. Can't please everyone

Cookiecrisps · 23/09/2020 20:37

@alwayslosing schools won’t be closed because of teachers moaning. What will close them is unsafe staffing levels which is on the cards the way things are going due to the failure of test, track and trace.

Lifeisabeach09 · 23/09/2020 20:39

@alwayslosing, you can keep large groups safe by supplying the tech, equipt, along with rule enforcement and consistency. Not to mention being prepared!
I'm not saying close the schools at all-the govt should have prepared for schools going back and keeping students and teachers safe.
OP is not the only teacher unhappy with the situation.

Lifeisabeach09 · 23/09/2020 20:42

I would sincerely love to know how other countries are faring with children being back in schools. How are they managing it? Do the teachers feel safe and supported?

mumsneedwine · 23/09/2020 20:45

@Lifeisabeach09 with part time school. PPE and regular testing. Social distancing and masks compulsory. That's how.

mumsneedwine · 23/09/2020 20:48

I spent today with over 2,000 people. In close contact with about 150 for an hour. In between I navigated staircases of jostling kids, some of whom coughed and sneezed. No social distancing, v few masks worn properly and no ventilation in rooms. What could possibly go wrongv?

Nellle · 23/09/2020 20:50

@alwayslosing It's not "teachers moaning" that will close schools, it's teachers forced to stay home without tests that will close schools.

It's really quite simple.

Yep but we also get lots of parents complaining about what is put in place such as windows being open and masks being worn. Then we have a group that are saying we are not doing enough. Schools & Teachers can’t win.
SaltyAndFresh · 23/09/2020 20:51

@alwayslosing what a spiteful post. Why don't you direct your negative energy into challenging your own employees instead of challenging teachers on a race to the bottom?

Cookiecrisps · 23/09/2020 20:51

@mumsneedwine but if you get ill you will still be told that you caught it at the supermarket not at school.

Well that's all right then. We should all just invite Covid into our lives.
