Unessential shops, whatever, it's Monday.

BikeTyson · 05/10/2020 10:10

The traffic light stuff is worrying me, we’d surely be heading for red pretty much straight away if they brought that in. Not that I’m really going to pubs or non essential shops at the moment anyway but I know a few small business owners who would be finished by a ban on hospitality and leisure.

Snoringferret · 05/10/2020 10:53

bike I agree.
My business just about survived and is currently just about surviving at a quarter of the capacity. If I have to close again I'll be seriously considering if it's worth it.

Snoringferret · 05/10/2020 10:54

I'm also really pissed off by the announcement today that they're solution to the job crisis is to have job coaches helping people find jobs.

If I lose my business which has been very successful for 8 years, my unemployment will have nothing to do with my cv writing skills.

It's so bloody patronising!!!

Dowser · 05/10/2020 11:53

My autistic grandson was deported in his uni accommodation at teesside last night.

He’s 22 so a bit older than most
Not sure he has adequate life skills so am expct8ng a fair bit of input from his parents ..well his mother at least.

Dowser · 05/10/2020 11:53

Deposited..bloody hell 😡

Shitfuckoh · 05/10/2020 12:07

The local restrictions (and the 'essential use only' advice for public transport) means the DC are going to school & walks in the local area only. I do online shopping for most things (and did before all of this) but I was hoping to be able to browse for Christmas Decs / treats / stocking fillers in store soon.
Looking at the figures, I don't think that's going to be happening anytime soon but apart from the stores, not much will change for us Sad Unless they closed schools of course Shock

PickAChew · 05/10/2020 12:13

Yeah, I haven't left Durham City for 4 weeks, now. Just thankful it's small and self contained. I could walk to the opposite side in under an hour, if I was feeling fit.

BikeTyson · 05/10/2020 12:18

I can foresee a long wet winter if the swimming pool closes, that’s already pretty much the last indoor place left to take DD to burn off energy. Sad I work 4 days and we used to have so much fun on my non working day in the week - pool, story time at the library, museums, soft play, visit granny and grandad, music classes at the Sage.

If we do go into a stricter lockdown and the weather is shit I might end putting her in nursery for an extra day, at least then she’ll get some exercise and she wouldn’t just be stuck in the house with me.

BessieSurtees · 05/10/2020 14:24

Speaking of online shopping I missed my usual slot last week and booked another and in a lockdown fuelled panic put 2 items in the basket to hold the delivery. I forgot it was Monday and at 8am this morning the Asda man delivered 1 bottle of Grey Goose vanilla vodka and one bottle of Pinot Grigio. He did ask if I was ok?

PickAChew · 05/10/2020 14:25

I think you'll be perfectly fine :o

dazzlingdeborahrose · 05/10/2020 14:32

Greetings from a grey and wet Northumberland. Just found this thread. Hope everyone is doing okay under new restrictions.

ScarMatty · 05/10/2020 14:40

Whoa, just found this thread!
Sunderland here

Dowser · 05/10/2020 14:55

@ScarMatty
Welcome
And I’m married to a mackem
( love keeping it in the family 😂)

Dowser · 05/10/2020 14:57

@BessieSurtees
Love that story
Utterly brilliant

DaddysGirl36 · 05/10/2020 15:10

@swg1

Looking at the local figures it feels like a much harder lockdown might be coming for us (County Durham) any minute now.

I'm drinking tea then going to do that charity shop sort in case they shut all essential shops again.

Oh gosh. I don't think I'll cope. Two very little ones. Already going mad not being able to go very far. I miss support from family & just seeing people for my own sanity (DH work all day). Going shopping is pretty much the only thing we can do together on our days off

Woah, look at Newcastle's numbers for the last seven days! I know a good proportion of those will be the cases from the universities/backlog issues, but still. It's shocking to see it written down.

In a report in the Chronicle last week where it said Newcastle had declared a major incident, someone from the council said they were on 'red plus' alert. So I think that yes, any traffic light system would most likely have us at red from the get-go. Ugh.

@Snoringferret I know. It's like sticking a plaster on a severed limb, but more insulting. Poor DD graduated this year and her CV is absolutely spot on - a first from Newcastle, loads of work experience including managing a coffee shop, but she can't get a job anywhere. She had one at the start of lockdown which she lost as soon as lockdown hit because the place closed for good. Her plan was to work there until about now then start her master's but that went out the window because she can't afford it without savings or a job. It's all very well patronising people about their CVs and whatnot but if there are no jobs and restrictions mean businesses are closing indefinitely, it's not going to help. DD is on antidepressants and has given up hope of finding any job, let alone in her field, despite working so hard for years. It's awful Flowers

By the way, the Chronicle is reporting today that the vaccine won't be available to under 50s. Looks like it's not going to be the solution we've hoped for Sad

Also sad to see that Cineworld at the Gate has closed and Odeons will only be opening at weekends. I never thought I'd miss the simple pleasure of going to the cinema and then for a drink and a bite to eat (without worrying about checking in/being done by 10pm) so much.

Surely it will be avaliable to buy like the flu jab now?

Rosehip10 · 05/10/2020 17:38

Also many work places (outside health and social care) will vaccinate their staff. My employer provides the flu jab for all staff members.

TattiePants · 05/10/2020 18:18

Just found this thread and can't believe how many Mackem's there are. I'm just south of the city centre.

DD has been in isolation for 12 days now due to a confirmed case in her class. Just 2 more days of home schooling then I can send her back to school. Has anyone been to an Everyone Active Leisure Centre recently? Once DD is back at school I wanted to start swimming or possibly join the gym but I'm a bit apprehensive about how safe it is. It doesn't help that only one of my three local pools is open so it's likelier to be busier than usual.
