Flu vaccine and shielding

Just sat in a boots website queue for ages for them to say they will only give flu jabs to over 65yrs. If you are shielding or live with someone shielding where are you getting flu jab?

Do you mean if you don't qualify on the NHS - presumably anyone shielding does - I don't know about people (under 50) living with them who don't qualify in their own right? I assume you have to go somewhere that is offering them - have you tried Superdrug or Lloyds pharmacy? I did read on here a few days ago that Boots had already run out of slots.

Toomboom · 22/09/2020 09:45

Are you sure about that? I have mine booked with Boots next week and I am under 65. My 19 yr old has his booked with them in a couple of weeks. He went there in person so they know how old he is

Lockdownseperation · 22/09/2020 09:49

We do both qualify for free flu jab. DH due to his medication and I qualify to get it for free this year because he is in the shielding category, although we would happily pay for it. We have separate GP which may make it more complicated.

The website definitely said they were only taking bookings for over 65 year olds. I will try ringing around instead.

Around our way they were only doing the over 65s because they haven't received stocks of the other vaccine yet.
It is different from the one for the over 65s.
They are expecting it to come in any day. Maybe Boots will update their website when the vaccine becomes available.

Racoonworld · 22/09/2020 10:03

If you qualify on the nhs you should have it at your doctors surgery. I always get a text around October time to remind me to book it in. Try phoning your doctors?

Underhisi · 22/09/2020 10:05

We have one booked at lloyds in a couple of weeks. I can have one free as a carer but will probably just pay for it. Ds also qualifies but has to have the nasal spray so have been told check back with the GP in a few weeks to see if they have come in.

frozendaisy · 22/09/2020 10:08

Try Tesco pharmacy

Lockdownseperation · 22/09/2020 10:10

The problem with the doctors is they are not doing it until later on our 4 yr old is getting the nasal flu vaccination at school but due to DH medication there is a risk that he can catch it from her if he doesn’t have the flu jab at least 2 weeks before her.

I had mine done at a local independent yesterday. I’m not entitled on nhs and paid to have it. I called around local ones first to check.

PrayingandHoping · 22/09/2020 10:14

Boots have allocated out all their stock and aren't taking new bookings

Try other places. Our nearest Tescos has slots

PeetaSue · 22/09/2020 10:15

Is it just that they haven't got the stock yet and so are doing over 65s first?

I am pregnant and have been told I likely won't have mine until October.

PrayingandHoping · 22/09/2020 10:20

@PeetaSue they have had some stock. But it's all been allocated out with booked appointments

They will get more in at some point

Other places have stock in though. Just have to look around

I've just looked at Tesco (stupidly didn't even think of there!) And booked mine for next week so thanks to PP for mentioning them!

Lockdownseperation · 22/09/2020 11:00

Thanks for the Tesco recommendation. Neither of our GP surgeries were ready to book appointments but we managed to get appointments at Tesco.

Our GP is doing a mass vaccination clinic on Saturday, iirc - we got letters, because we all fall within qualifying groups on the NHS. Actually, we couldn't go, and we booked jabs at our independent pharmacy for September 16th.

OverTheRainbow88 · 22/09/2020 11:13

ASDA also do it, well the big one by us does!

FascinatingCarrot · 22/09/2020 11:17

Our local chemist does them too. May be worth people checking their smaller pharmacies.

ThatDamnScientist · 22/09/2020 12:05

We have ours booked today, dd1 is 17 (paid), I'm under 65 (nhs).

If you are/were in the shielding group surely you are entitled to the nhs one? (I'm only clinically vulnerable not in the shielding group and am entitled to the free nhs). Maybe phone your gp surgery and see if you are able to get it through them?

ThatDamnScientist · 22/09/2020 12:06

Sorry, ignore my post - I didnt read the thread properly Blush

I’ve booked DH’s at Superdrug. They are starting from 5thOctober and have plenty of appointments. He does it privately but I think they do NHS’s as well.

Angel2702 · 22/09/2020 12:16

I couldn’t get one at boots but managed to book one at Tesco.

ktsc89 · 22/09/2020 12:16

Sorry, this is a really stupid question but I've never had a flu jab. I'm pregnant (just under 12 weeks) and my midwife mentioned in my booking in appointment that I would need a flu jab. All she said was to look out for adverts in pharmacies etc so the suggestion is that my gp surgery wouldn't offer it?

Can anyone help? Could I book in with Lloyd's pharmacy for example and expect to receive a free appointment.

I would phone the doctors to ask this but it's not appointment booking in time/I don't fancy having to stay on hold for 30 mins/not sure how helpful some of the receptionists actually are!

Thanks

PrayingandHoping · 22/09/2020 12:20

@ktsc89 you are entitled to it anywhere. It's usual to get from your go but otherwise u can get it free from boots/Tesco etc.

Have u looked on your gp website/fb? Ours updates there

ktsc89 · 22/09/2020 12:26

Thanks @PrayingandHoping , never thought to look on the GPs website. Will look at that initially.
