My teens are saying they will ignore any new restrictions

Big argument this evening. My teens are saying they will ignore any new restrictions because they are mixing at school/college anyway, so what’s the point of not mixing outside of school?

They are really furious. I am quite shocked at how angry they are.

Are they being really selfish? I’m so cross with them. How are other people’s teens taking the possibility of more restrictions?

Mine are totally fed up with it. I won't be stopping them doing anything.

Sobeyondthehills · 22/09/2020 04:04

I find it odd that people can’t see that not sticking to the rules only makes things worse. The more they are broken, the more the virus will spread exponentially and the govt will ramp up the restrictions. We might not agree. We won’t like it but that is what will happen.

Why the hell should we, when the people who make the rules not only break them but then have the loopholes to skip through them.

I am begging you to tell me why I can't meet up with my family in a garden but can go to a wedding with them. Why my son can socialise with 90 students for 6 hours a day but not meet with 6 of his friends in a park?

The problem is there is the government are trying a whole we are trying to be nice and let you do things, when simply you either close down or open up, you can't have one or another

That sounded just like it came out of the mouths of Whitty and Vallance.

I just don't get what's hard to understand 🤬🤬

Reduce the risk of spread by reducing contact. Schools and work are necessary. Seeing your mates after school or work isn't.

What's not obvious?

Inkpaperstars · 22/09/2020 04:25

@TheKeatingFive

When road accidents start growing exponentially be sure and let us know

So what? We should only try to protect people from dying of things that grow exponentially? How ... odd.

No, obviously not. What a strange interpretation. I was pointing out that a comparison of reponses to deaths from road accidents and to something that is growing exponentially is not very helpful at this point.

Might be worth getting them to watch the conference given yesterday morning. It was pretty sobering. You're right, it's all one big mess.

Hopefully they'll come around. I can't imagine many of their friends will be out. If they clearly won't adhere to restrictions as they come in, then I'd tell them they'll have to pay any fines that are issued by the police who were around a lot more during lockdown

TheClaws · 22/09/2020 05:06

@Arealnumber

I'm not surprised and I have every sympathy with them. Young people are being sidelined, mostly for the sake of extending the lives of ninety somethings. It's unfair and I'm glad young people are starting to stand their ground. I am classed as vulnerable and so is my 70 something Mum but we have led good lives and don't want the lives of children and young people disrupted further in order to protect us.
If this is the kind of amorality you are passing down to your children, I wouldn't be surprised if they break rules without any concern.
redgin · 22/09/2020 05:46

Frankly your teens need locking up. Either by you or the police.

Since when did we get to choose which laws we keep or break?

Every day of our lives we have the choice.
redgin · 22/09/2020 05:58

Indeed we do.

With consequences

Aramox · 22/09/2020 06:08

Mine’s saying this too- it’s obviously the social media line. Thing is, like most of his friends, last lockdown we couldn’t get them out of the house for love or money!

This.

As a secondary school teacher who teaches years 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13 in poorly ventilated rooms without a mask or visor, my health in dependent on community rates staying low. Schools aren’t Covid-secure so the only chance I have of staying well is if the virus isn’t brought in in the first place.

We all need to play our parts. It’s sucks for all of us. I haven’t seen my mum since March as she’s in a care home that has never reopened. I can’t even speak to her as she requires 24/7 care. I go into work full on anxiety. I’m on a antidepressants. None of this I say IRL and people see ‘happy me’. I just have to remember that the rules are there to keep us ALL safe.

I completely agree. It's concerning that people think its OK not to abide by the law because it's inconvenient for them but claim its because the rules make no sense; the rules are not perfect but the principle of minimising social contact does make sense.

The government are trying to keep the economy going, keep schools open and prevent the NHS from being overwhelmed, I'm no fan of BJ or the Tories but I wouldn't want to be walking this tightrope.

I am not optimistic about the winter if few people are willing to be compliant. We went into lockdown at the end of March and started to open things up through the summer when we know the virus spreads less, with winter and less severe restrictions I think we are in for a shock.

I saw an MP in some committee or other asking BJ about utilising the military in the covid response, BJ was clearly not comfortable with the idea but I can see it coming to that if we're not able to put up with a few months of inconvenience.

tempnamechange98765 · 22/09/2020 06:52

No they're not being selfish (well technically they are, but they're entitled to be) - this has been an absolute shit show for many, but particularly for young people. It's not fair, and needs to stop.

MushMonster · 22/09/2020 06:59

I think Boris did set a very bad example when he justified and backed Dominic up. It did not have an effect straight after, but people keeps mentioning it, that the rulers do not abide, so they will not.
There seem to be lots of people saying they no longer care about rules! And now that the cases are going up, so the risk is higher.
It would have been easier to introduce the masks from the beginning, instead of changing direction, contradicting what they said yesterday..... I know there were not enough of the surgical ones, but the cloth washable ones are not difficult to produce and source......

TheKeatingFive · 22/09/2020 07:05

The comparison is about deaths we could do something about but don’t. An excellent reference point to put the CV response in context. The only reason you want to dismiss it is because it doesn’t help your argument.

PhilCornwall1 · 22/09/2020 07:08

Agree with this. Yes, people are saying that this shouldn't be an argument, but it will continue to be. Cummings from the beginning of that farce showed that he didn't give a toss and it was obvious in his press conference that he was bored by it all. He knew he was bomb proof as Johnson was never going to sack him.

So of course a proportion of the country are going to say fuck off to Johnson and his rules.

Nellodee · 22/09/2020 07:12

I'm pretty sure we would respond quite strongly to road accidents if we thought we were going to have 50,000 accidents a day by mid October.

glowworm93 · 22/09/2020 07:13

I don't blame them, I would feel the same.

They are allowed to view things differently to you. There is more than one opinion on how this pandemic should be handled.

swimmingc · 22/09/2020 07:13

"Big argument this evening. My teens are saying they will ignore any new restrictions because they are mixing at school/college anyway, so what’s the point of not mixing outside of school?"

They have a point though?

TheKeatingFive · 22/09/2020 07:14

Well we have 1.3 million a year globally. You’d think that would do it. Apparently not though.

TheKeatingFive · 22/09/2020 07:14

Road accidents I mean

TheKeatingFive · 22/09/2020 07:14

Sorry, deaths by RTA a year. Brain not awake yet.

KnobChops · 22/09/2020 07:15

I agree that it’s hard to tell teenagers off when senior lockdown advocates (Cummings, Ferguson etc) did what the hell they wanted. If I was a young person I too would be bloody cross that my current and future life was being fucked over to save a load of boomers who voted for Brexit and 4 Tory election wins. All the things they enjoyed (Cheaper homes, university grants, child benefit) they have voted to remove from young people. And who continuously mock young people calling them snowflakes. Since when did that age group show any care towards anyone except themselves?

SchrodingersUnicorn · 22/09/2020 07:21

I'm a teacher. Borderline for the shielding group, very vulnerable. I spend hours a day in unventilated overcrowded classrooms with these teenagers with no masks.
I am literally putting my life on the line and risking my own DD being motherless for their education. I have no sympathy whatsoever with them being 'bored' of restrictions. I'm bored too. We all are.
