Chris Whitty to hold briefing tomorrow

molifly14 · 20/09/2020 22:09

According to sky news, Chris Witty is to hold a briefing tomorrow and will not be joined by any members of the cabinet or Boris Johnson and won't take questions. He will apparently discuss different scenarios.

Does that sound odd to anyone else and does this maybe mean no further restrictions this week, let's just try and scare us all into being good instead?

@baytreetavern I am at home all day, alone, with a non verbal toddler and soon a newborn. If they say 'no mixing of households for the forseeable' I am literally looking at speaking to NOBODY, all day, every day. I am sorry. I cant do it. I will honestly break. At the minute I see 2 friends and they are the only reason I am sane. My family live abroad. I am guessing I will be introducing them to their grandchild over Skype .....

Papyrus · 21/09/2020 11:33

@Polkadotties

So worst case 200 people die a day from it. That is still a tiny number. 450 die a day from cancer and that is likely to go through the roof due to cancelled services
It won’t just stay at 200 deaths a day, it will keep doubling.
GreenGoldRed · 21/09/2020 11:33

@Jrobhatch29 I read it same way as you. We will be told to not socialise with other households, but works and schools will say open. Kids can keep going to school (as transmission rate low). Companies have put measures in. If we lockdown again economy crashes and that leads to health problems and death.

And they are praying vaccine by end of this year and that is distributed widely by end of 6 months.

I don’t believe they said that was the ‘worst’ case. Why would the figures stop exponentially growing just because it was the end of the graph?

Besides, we are entering the time of year when hospitals end up collapsing due to the weight of winter, adding covid on top of that seems disastrous. Not at all the same situation as the spring.

And sadly I can’t see any half-arsed measures working at all. We are in a ‘locked down’ area and no one is paying any attention to it, life is going on as usual on the whole.

Most people will not bother with any extra measures while the schools are still open, parents/teachers won’t see the point.

ksohh0 · 21/09/2020 11:35

I think we just have to readjust our expectations for the nect 9 months. I do think by the middle of next year there will be vaccines firmly on the horizon, but until then there just isn't going to be a 'back to normal'.

I think some people will choose mental health over the risk of covid and that’s okay. There will be a lot of us making that decision this time round I think.

MarshaBradyo · 21/09/2020 11:36
@MarshaBradyoso so you can only see people if you’re spending money? Bleak and incredibly divisive, not everyone can afford to go out for a meal every time they want to see their mum. It’s putting economy before mental health.
Buffalo it’s incredibly difficult. Hopefully outside contact will remain.

But mental health won’t be improved by mass redundancy or rising cases that cause lockdowns that bring job losses.

That’s the tightrope and it’s horrible but it’s all we’ve got.

Incidentally if you are in a deprived area and less likely to be able to afford to go out the cyclical effect of above is heightened. Part of why we are already seeing such disparity.

On a personal note my family couldn’t be further away geographically nor logistically as they o/s in a cove free state. I find it very hard and have empathy for others who do too.

One thing they should keep is support bubbles as a priority.

Not a worst case.

What four doubling will lead to.

It continues to double.

Put 200 in a calculator and double it another 4 times. That's approximately how many people will be dying every day at Halloween without action.

Double it another 4 times. That's approximately how many people will be dying every day at Christmas without action.

Unless it starts doubling faster as it did in March when it was doubling every three days.

MarshaBradyo · 21/09/2020 11:37

Covid free state

ChicCroissant · 21/09/2020 11:37

@MJMG2015

We don't have to agree you know - I think it would put Boris on the spot. You don't. Fine both ways.

LarkDescending · 21/09/2020 11:37

200 deaths a day is not the worst case number, it is the projected level to be reached by November on current trends.

Everyone has individual circumstances. It doesn't make anyone special.

Areyousureted · 21/09/2020 11:39

Is it really maximum 200 a day? I am not sure that is what they meant?

PasstheBucket89 · 21/09/2020 11:41

I think the issue is, we KNOW the powers that be do not hold themselves to tje same rules and standards, theres whispers of Boris going abroad for a christening. People have no trust or faith.

The80sweregreat · 21/09/2020 11:42

This is so depressing.
I feel for anyone stuck at home with little children.
It is hard.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 21/09/2020 11:43

Government during the summer: Send your kids back to school, go shopping and pubbing.

Government now: wtf you do that for, you're all spreading covid.

Hmm
Hardbackwriter · 21/09/2020 11:43

What a callous response @baytreetavern

DisappearingGirl · 21/09/2020 11:44

So trying to look on the bright side ... the heartening message I'm getting from it is that we are very likely to have some sort of vaccine in 2021. That is currently the long term plan. So this is not forever - it is a case of battening down the hatches till a vaccine arrives. So yes it will be a difficult, and boring, winter. But then it will be spring, and easier to meet outside. And I'm very hopeful we will have a vaccine with at least some effectiveness - in sufficient amounts to at least cover the most vulnerable groups - sometime next year. I know it's not a definite, but it's sounding the most likely scenario.

You’ll probably still be asked to do that over winter

Quite. And here's 50% off to go to all the restaurants you can fit into one month...
Polkadotties · 21/09/2020 11:45

Ok I probably heard wrong. I thought he said worst case was 200 deaths per day.

Areyousureted · 21/09/2020 11:45

Is there a plan for boris to do a briefing at some point later ?

People saying you’ll make your own decisions, how about everyone around you ? You can’t make decisions in isolation.
I know it’s difficult. But it will be much worse if there isn’t an itu bed for you/a relative or friend.
I also don’t know how long the itu staff will be able to continue physically and mentally.

Leafbeans · 21/09/2020 11:46

The government wanted to give the economy as much of a boost as it could during the summer, but winter was always going to be more savage just due to the fact it's favourable conditions for a virus. Even if we had stayed on a strict lockdown during the summer, as it wouldn't have been eradicated we would be facing the same kinda predicament now. My friend owns a cafe, because of EOTHO and people being encouraged to go out to eat, she has a hope of her business lasting through the winter.
