Anyone Changed Their Mind?

As the second wave approaches and hospitals and ICUs start to fill up again, have any of those who spent the summer saying the pandemic was over changed their minds? If so, what caused that change? If not, why do you still believe this is nothing to worry about?

How much will it cost if we continue doing what we're doing?

Proper lockdown with restricted borders (continued after easing of lockdown) might cost upfront but it's the cheaper option longer-term. It might not eliminate Covid but it will contain it. Meaning small outbreaks could be quickly managed.

Not doing it is a false economy.

walksen · 19/09/2020 22:50

"Not doing it is a false economy"

I certainly don't know enough to work out if that's true or not and I suspect neither do you.

The people who do have access to the figures and the expertise to properly assess them apparently disagree with you.

SheepandCow · 19/09/2020 23:04

In the UK. They don't disagree in other countries, where things are going rather better than here. I know whose expertise I trust more. And that's not the country that can't even organise testing without it turning into an utter shambles.

walksen · 19/09/2020 23:24

"In the UK. They don't disagree in other countries, where things are going rather better than here. I know whose expertise I trust more"

We are not new Zealand etc. We were talking about the cost of closing the borders of the UK Vs local or national lockdown. This will be different for us than new Zealand or any other island nation due to our economy etc.

I trust that the government advisers and civil service will have properly coated and assessed these options even if it is Dom or Boris making the final decision.

Which experts have you found that say the UK could be better of by shutting the borders. I'd be interested to see their analysis.

Or is it More likely this is just your opinion no better informed than anyone else's on here?

SheepandCow · 19/09/2020 23:55

Well we can see the costs of not doing it. Six or so months on, it's cost us dearly. To health and the economy.

It's not impossible but unlikely there can be mass distribution of a vaccine until this time next year. So, we either spend a bit upfront to contain the virus, or we continue as we are. Which has proved very costly.

I should think it's reasonable to suggest the government hasn't made the best decisions so far. Indeed it's been incompetence at it's finest.

Talking of my opinion. I don't believe we'll actually make the sensible choice. I'd like us to but expect we'll continue the false economy shortsighted dragged out it's all a bit shit for everybody approach. Unfortunately.

walksen · 20/09/2020 00:09

"Well we can see the costs of not doing it. Six or so months on, it's cost us dearly. To health and the economy."

But you don't know if these costs would have been worse with closed borders do you?
So how do you know it is a false economy?

I don't think the government have particularly competent either. This doesn't mean that I can claim a different decision would have been better. Once covid was widely established in the uk that option was closed and with the level of imports exports, our still bring part of the single market this year, our well established transport links worldwide I suspect closing the border was never a viable option but also recognise that I lack the expertise to claim this as fact.

SheepandCow · 20/09/2020 00:20

I'm not claiming it's a definite fact. Like you, I'm giving an opinion based on the evidence and balance of probability.

I already said I didn't advocate stopping freight (so we'd still import and export). It would be much easier to manage international arrivals if it was limited to essential travel only. Which includes freight and asylum (with proper quarantine where necessary).

I'll wish you goodnight. I'm off to do some bedtime reading on ostriches. They have very cute faces and apparently don't actually stick their heads in sand.

It’s not the belief in a second wave, it’s the gloating. And if you can’t see that the OP of this thread was gloating, you look pretty stupid
No, it’s not gloating. Pointing out that predicting a second wave was right because it was obvious and asking whether all the people who maintained it wouldn’t happen can now see they were wrong is not gloating. It’s also not being pleased there’s a second wave beginning. It’s being fucking irritated with people who have denied and denied and denied so they can do exactly what they fucking want.
It’s anger. Not gloating.

Um...Dom is an adviser...
Plus I’m not convinced the government are allowing civil servants to do anything like seriously analysing alternatives.

walksen · 20/09/2020 13:03

"..Dom is an adviser..."

If you say so. What ever his title I think most people suspect he has more influence than your typical adviser, and for whatever reason he is treated as indispensible by Boris.

Bit like dick Cheney had lots more power than your typical vice president because bush junior was not a details man....

What a dick

Jrobhatch29 · 20/09/2020 14:56

@MadameBlobby

What a dick
😂 My thoughts exactly. You can almost feel the glee in the post
MadameBlobby · 20/09/2020 15:03

@anxiousanna75

I couldn't care less about it anymore. I'm considered high risk, but I'm past caring. Just taking each day as it comes.
Same here.

I’ll do what I’ve done throughout, follow all the rules. There’s nowt else I can do. I can’t control other people, the government or the virus. What will happen will happen.

Viciouslybashed · 20/09/2020 15:12

I don't think the op is gloating but honestly the heartless attitude of people on here has shocked me. I don't understand what is so hard to comprehend about a pandemic raging out of control with no mitigation measures will cost the lives of people that perhaps would not have been expected to die. Could be someone you love who has no underlying health conditions, which many of you seem to imply means they don't count!, then how will you feel. I mean I am going to carry on being my cautious self and keep away from idiots regardless. But honestly some people should be ashamed of themselves.
