When babies have their jabs

and the big side effect is a temperature (mine have always had one after a jab), I'm guessing you still have to test? Even if you haven't been anywhere else? 🙈🙈

Argh! So in this case except to have to isolate 2 weeks post jabs as no tests.

How do you even test for a baby?

I wouldn't. It would be fairly obvious as they get the temp within hours or at the most a day of a vaccination.

Jrobhatch29 · 16/09/2020 20:24

No. My baby got a high temp after her third set of injections a few weeks ago and it didn't even cross my mind to test her as I knew what caused the temperature

Bellamybells · 16/09/2020 20:25

That's what I thought initially but you can't know for sure. You could've technically picked it up at the doctors surgery. So I think you would still have to tbh.

If that's what you feel is right....
But If you go out with a baby who is young enough to need vaccinations it's not like they're getting out their pram and running up to people. I feel like it would be a bit of a pointless two weeks

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 16/09/2020 20:27

I wouldn’t personally.

Itsabeautifuldayheyhey · 16/09/2020 20:31

I wouldn't. Leave tests for those who genuinely need them.

BunsyGirl · 16/09/2020 20:32

If every baby who gets a high temperature following routine vaccinations is tested, we are fucked. I have tried for the past two days to get a test. Just get a message saying “The Service is Currently Busy”.

Bellamybells · 16/09/2020 20:34

It'll be his one year jabs so he is old enough too. I think I'll have to go with my gut. If there were millions of tests then of course I would as want to keep everyone (including my elderly parents!) safe, but I agree I wouldn't want to do it with current shortage.
I have a month so let's see.

An ex GP friend of mine helped me out on this one for my DD’s preschool jabs when I was worrying-suggested I preemptively calpoled her and then the temperature would never materialise.......

mynameiscalypso · 16/09/2020 20:36

The practice nurse who did DS' one year jabs said they didn't usually cause a temperature unlike the earlier jabs. She was right in the case of my DS (and he also got one after the earlier ones).

Megan2018 · 16/09/2020 20:37

I have been specifically told by my surgery that a fever within 48hrs of jabs without other Covid symptoms like a cough should be disregarded for Covid testing. We have our 12 month old ones Monday.

Bubblesbubblesmybubbles · 16/09/2020 20:42

Oh one year jabs you quite often get a reaction a week later so that's going to be a right pain! We were told with our baby to assume for 24hrs any temp was jabs then after that test

Kittykat93 · 16/09/2020 20:44

I wouldn't even think to isolate because of this. Just dose up with calpol and if temp persists then test but for the first 24 hours??? No way would I be worrying about that.

Mmsnet101 · 16/09/2020 21:05

My DD had her 1yr jabs today and I asked mainly because I don't want her nursery turning her away tomorrow if the fever materialises. They said that as it will be linked to the jabs, then no test needed just Calpol. If the fever doesn't go with Calpol /ibuprofen alternating after 48hrs and/or other symptoms then seek advice from nhs24 covid line before trying to book a test.

I gave her Calpol ahead of the jabs and no fever so far, so hopefully we've avoided it this time around!

Bol87 · 16/09/2020 22:28

We got the same advice, if the temp is within 48 hours of their jabs we can carry on as normal. If it continues after 48, we need to test.

My DD1 got a really bad fever after her 1 year jabs but calpol sorted it & she was right as reign the next day.

My DD2 got a fever after each set of baby jabs despite being told she wouldn’t after round 2. Within an hour she was boiling?! But again, calpol & slept a lot and the next day, totally normal.

rainbowunicorn · 16/09/2020 23:00

People really need to be applying some common sense. If your baby spikes a slight temp after in the 24 hrs after the jabs then don't test. If they show any symptoms other than taht then do test. If they spike a temp 3 days later then test.
It really isn't difficult. I despair for how we will get through the winter. It appears that people have completely lost the ability to think for themselves.

Hellomoonstar · 17/09/2020 00:01

Ds3 has had two vaccinations that raised his temperature so far (12 weeks vaccination didn’t raise his temperature). We didn’t isolate nor got him a test. Just calpol and comfort.

Torvean32 · 17/09/2020 00:38

If your child gets a temperature straight after the vaccine it's nothing to do with the doctors surgery.

My plan was if it's within 24 hours and there are NO other symptoms then assume it's the jabs. And you say that but the cases are clearly going up and if you think of the thousands of babies having their injections, some of them will actually be infected. So there will probably be some covid kids that are missed. So it's not a completely thick, selfish thought. 😐 But agreed that I think you need to wait a few days to see if it improves or not.

Oh no! Crap 🙈 might just self isolate for a week.

CoronaBollox · 17/09/2020 09:43

My DD was born in lockdown so obviously have had 3 sets of jabs,
And had a temperature with 2 of them. The temperature set in within the day so common sense told me it was the normal side effect. I didn't bother testing, didn't think we had to? I wouldn't suggest other parents to do it either tbh.

CoronaBollox · 17/09/2020 09:45

Also my friends DS was told the same from her GP surgery after his 1 year jabs. If just a temperature and no other symptoms then treat as you would before covid. Calpol and a cuddle.

Frazzled13 · 17/09/2020 10:02

The nurse who did DD’s one year jabs in June said no need to isolate if she got a temp 24/48 hours after.

Hellomoonstar · 17/09/2020 10:08

Hope your little one feels well soon.
The thought of ds3 being exposed to covid did also enter my mind. It is a normal thought after being bombarded with get a test and isolate if someone has a high temperature from almost everywhere.

If you are unsure call your gp surgery of advice. The nurse who administer the vaccination should have giving you the after care advice that should now include when should you get a test. I was told up to 5 days was fine (well dh took him and that is what he was told). These were not the 12months vaccination as ds3 is almost 5months now.
