Are you routinely checking your/family's temperature?

Just wondering.

I've never checked my own temperature. I remember checking DC's once or twice when they were ill as babies, so I do have a thermometer somewhere. (Checking just confirmed that yes, they did have a temperature, so I haven't ever bothered since).

Since temperature is one of the three symptoms, are people checking routinely on otherwise well-seeming family members?

Or would you only check if your child seemed unwell and hot anyway? (In which case, it would be obvious they did have one anyway).

We have always regularly checked everyone's temperature. We have an in-ear thermometer, and used it maybe 3 times a week pre Covid. Nowadays we do it daily. My son enjoys it (he likes checking ours) so he usually prompts us to take it.

dementedpixie · 13/09/2020 10:08

No. I raked out the calpol thermometer I got when the kids were babies (now age 13 and 16!) And had to get new batteries for it. Tested Ds when he had the cold but I don't test routinely

megletthesecond · 13/09/2020 10:08

Yes. Since March, a few times a week. I scribble it on the calendar. We have an ear thermometer.
It's quite interesting tbh. Even in the heatwave when I was rushing around I didn't get above 36.4. Teen DS runs higher.

Thegirlhasnoname · 13/09/2020 10:10

We check ours (3 people including 1 year old) when putting the toddler to bed. She likes the beep it makes when doing the reading, or I assume she does given how much she asks for “beeps” 😂

Muchtoomuchtodo · 13/09/2020 10:11

No not at home.

Mine gets checked routinely at work and bootcamp, ds gets checked at rugby (pointless ime, last week he measured 33.3 and the next boy was 37.1 and both were allowed to train).

If anyone’s not well at home they get checked but we’re not doing it routinely. I’m obsessed enough with trying to do things to reduce the risk of disruption to school and work that this is one thing too many for me.

megletthesecond · 13/09/2020 10:14

this was interesting in New Scientist recently.

Itsabeautifuldayheyhey · 13/09/2020 10:18

I bought a new fast response thermometer and regularly took my temperature just to establish my general base temperature. I bought the same for a relative who lives alone. I also bought pulse oximeters and did the same.
Now, I will just use if anyone feels off-colour.

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 13/09/2020 10:19

I wasn't during lockdown but I've been checking since the 4 DC returned to school/college as it's a lot of mixing. One of the parents of my dds friend has just had a positive test for covid. Her friend and the rest of the household have all tested negative and are isolating but we're keeping a close eye on DD as she was spending 6hrs a day with the friend.

ClarencesMum · 13/09/2020 10:19

Why? Like even now, why - but pre covid?

catchyjem · 13/09/2020 10:20

I have always taken temperature when someone doesn't feel well but never just for the sake of it and I don't intend to start.

PotteringAlong · 13/09/2020 10:21

No.

Serenschintte · 13/09/2020 10:23

No, if I’m ill I feel unwell. I think it’s only really useful if a temperature is really high and it’s dangerous
My dc are a little older tho

CherieBabySpliffUp · 13/09/2020 10:23

For those of you that are what would you do if someone in your household had a high temperature?
Would you automatically get a test?

Thesearmsofmine · 13/09/2020 10:23

No, although DH gets his checked at work. I will if anyone is unwell but otherwise no. I don’t know why anyone would do it regularly pre Covid?

Oblomov20 · 13/09/2020 10:29

No. Never have done. Never will.

Clymene · 13/09/2020 10:30

No

fifteenisthemagicnumber · 13/09/2020 10:30

@JayDot500 why pre COVID?!

passmethewineplease · 13/09/2020 10:34

No, only when the DCs feel hot and appear unwell.

I don’t see the point in routinely testing temperatures. Surely people can tell if they’re unusually hot? Confused

megletthesecond · 13/09/2020 10:41

pass but my unusually hot might be 37°. But the NHS says a fever is 38. I'll know when I'm ill but it's interesting to see the figures.

SeekingCoffee33 · 13/09/2020 10:43

Not unless they are poorly

Dillydallyingthrough · 13/09/2020 10:44

Its interesting that people check temperatures regularly (even before covid?) - do you mind me asking why? Was there something that led to it or did your parents do it with you?

I have a thermometer but I've always been able to tell if DD has a temperature, like you OP used it a couple of times to confirm when she was little or if the GP asks what it is over the phone.

noseresearch · 13/09/2020 10:45

No, I’ve never thought to measure temperature unless actually feeling unwell

NannyR · 13/09/2020 10:49

It's probably a good idea to take everyone's temperature when they are well and keep a note of it with the thermometer, just so you have a baseline to compare with if they are ill.
I don't think there is a need to take it on a regular basis though if everyone is feeling well and symptom free.

AnnaMagnani · 13/09/2020 10:50

No. Thought about it for about 5 minutes but after randomly checking the temperature of everything in sight and getting increasingly odd results when we had panic bought a thermometer, we realised this was a crazy idea.

Our temperatures ranged from 33 - 38 within a ten minute spell on a hot day Shock Decided readings were only of value if we were actually ill.

RiftGibbon · 13/09/2020 10:51

No. Had to go and buy one Thursday when DC felt unwell with a sore throat and was hot.
