Are you routinely checking your/family's temperature?

Just wondering.

I've never checked my own temperature. I remember checking DC's once or twice when they were ill as babies, so I do have a thermometer somewhere. (Checking just confirmed that yes, they did have a temperature, so I haven't ever bothered since).

Since temperature is one of the three symptoms, are people checking routinely on otherwise well-seeming family members?

Or would you only check if your child seemed unwell and hot anyway? (In which case, it would be obvious they did have one anyway).

No, why would I unless I felt unwellConfused

PleasantVille · 13/09/2020 17:36

@PolarBearStrength

I will check DS if he is actually unwell or seems unusually grumpy. Usually just to check if he needs another dose of calpol/nurofen.

When I had a nasty cough last week I checked my temp a couple of times. I will occasionally check my temperature if unwell. If I’m calling the GP for example as they usually want to know.

The GP asks what your temperature is?

Really, is that normal, I have never been asked for my temperature or my DCs

Like a few other posters I've managed to get my DC to teenage years without one.

cologne4711 · 13/09/2020 17:38

Nope. Don't have a thermometer (well I do have one of the forehead strips but it's rather old so not very accurate).

The kiss test works pretty well though, if one of us felt off-colour.

I know what my baseline is because it was taken when I had a sports massage.

Reading this thread, I'm amazed thermometers are sold at all!

I think it might be one of those mumsnet things...

Whenever any of the kids, but especially ds, has had to go to the GP, hospital OOH...they've always asked what their temperature is!

Also, medical people have always said that, on the whole, if you're not feeling rubbish with a fever you don't need to medicate...so it is definitely possible to have a high temperature and not feel dreadful.

Ds can feel fine to touch, but have a high temperature...but he has wonky temperature regulation.

Parker231 · 13/09/2020 18:33

No - why would you?

Shooglywheel · 13/09/2020 18:33

No

Scarby9 · 13/09/2020 18:35

I don't own a thermometer and have not had my temperature taken since I was about 13. This thread is a revelation of a different world!

vodkaredbullgirl · 13/09/2020 18:35

They are not the old fashioned thermometers, where they have mercury in them.

Jemimapuddleduk · 13/09/2020 18:37

We got into using an ear thermometer when my son was undergoing chemotherapy at 16 months old. He had a hickman like for some time later (post treatment) and it was essential that if he spiked a temp had to go into hospital for 48 hours for iv antibiotics. I still use it as really calpol is only supposed to be used when there is a fever. Means I don’t give them calpol if they don’t need it.

Topseyt · 13/09/2020 18:48

No. I've never done this and I doubt that I ever will.

I don't see the point. If the GP wants to know my temperature when I am there then they take it themselves.

insancerre · 13/09/2020 18:54

No
I’ve never owned a thermometer and my children are now adults
If they had a temperature I could tell because they felt hot and were poorly
I don’t see the point of just randomly taking temperatures

Kaktus · 13/09/2020 19:14

I have one, I use it when one of the DC feels hot to touch or if they’re unwell.
I have actually been asked by the Dr/111 if I’ve phoned about the children.
I wouldn’t use it for no reason... that’s the way madness lies.

bengalcat · 13/09/2020 19:17

No I’ve never owned one and kid now at Uni .

user1493413286 · 13/09/2020 19:19

I’ve been feeling DDs head more than usual as I’m fairly well versed in what is normal or hot for her now and if she’s hot I’ll check. Similarly if I felt shivery how I do when I have a temp then I would

Stinkyguineapig · 13/09/2020 19:22

DS school ask parents to check temp before we send them to school each day bit a few days I have forgotten.

Stinkyguineapig · 13/09/2020 19:25

I rarely used a thermometer before covid.

MinaMurray · 13/09/2020 19:27

We have a thermometer, but I don’t check temperatures routinely.

Only if someone feels too warm to the touch or if they seem unwell.

KitKatastrophe · 13/09/2020 19:28

No I'm not. I cant get hold of an accurate thermometer for less than £50 and I'm not wasting money in a cheap point-and-shoot made in China which is probably wrong anyway.
If they feel hot to the touch, I'll get a test.

MsAwesomeDragon · 13/09/2020 19:34

I am currently checking my temperature every morning. I don't do that normally. But I am going to work in a large secondary school every day. I do NOT want to be the person who takes it into school and infects 8 classes full of teenagers. I am also aware that I have 8 classes full of teenagers regularly sitting in front of me who could potentially be asymptomatic and infectious (or even symptomatic but parents don't know the rules/haven't been able to get a test so just sent them in anyway).

If I was working in a different environment I probably wouldn't be temp checking very often. I'm not forcing it on dh or dd, as they are in contact with far fewer people so I'm likely to catch it before them.

GalaxyCookieCrumble · 13/09/2020 20:05

No, you should only be testing when symptomatic, and know how to interpret the readings otherwise what is the point?

Purplewithred · 13/09/2020 20:09

I did to start with but we soon all got bored. Do if I feel mildly off.

BackforGood · 13/09/2020 20:14

Why? Like even now, why - but pre covid?

Confused

I've managed to raise 3 dc to adulthood without ever needing a thermometer. You can tell if one of them has a temperature without a thermometer.
As you why you would do this daily?? Hmm

frillseeking · 13/09/2020 20:29

If the kids are running hot I always check their temperature anyway but definitely even more so at the moment. DH is going back into the office soon and they have been asked to check every day before going in.

BertieBotts · 13/09/2020 20:34

Honestly, if you touch your family regularly on the skin, for example kissing them goodnight, or just hugging or holding hands or being in any kind of close proximity you will 100% notice if they have a temperature, because they immediately feel ALL WRONG.

A thermometer is then useful so that you can check whether it's really a temperature or they are just a bit off colour and/or for little ones whether it's serious enough to give calpol and/or call the doctor, but for a binary test whether or not somebody has a fever, all you have to do is kiss their forehead.

fruitpastille · 13/09/2020 20:36

I've got one but find it pretty unreliable. It's easy to get different several readings within a minute or two. Unless it's a medical type thermometer and it's been calibrated I suspect many are not that accurate. Kiss test works better!
