Are you routinely checking your/family's temperature?

Just wondering.

I've never checked my own temperature. I remember checking DC's once or twice when they were ill as babies, so I do have a thermometer somewhere. (Checking just confirmed that yes, they did have a temperature, so I haven't ever bothered since).

Since temperature is one of the three symptoms, are people checking routinely on otherwise well-seeming family members?

Or would you only check if your child seemed unwell and hot anyway? (In which case, it would be obvious they did have one anyway).

Nope, not before Covid and not now.

I had a colleague who checked her infant son’s temperature every day. She was constantly emailing to say “Jonny’s temperature is raised so I’m keeping him off nursery”. All I could think was that a perfectly healthy child was being dosed with calpol for no reason! Generally if your child is ill, you’ll know, taking their temperature doesn’t really add to that knowledge (pre Covid, of course).

Er, no. It honestly hasn't entered my head.

AgeLikeWine · 13/09/2020 11:49

Yes, I have taken my temperature every day since before the first lockdown. 36.5 this morning Smile.

FromTheAshes · 13/09/2020 12:00

Yes, I started about 10 years ago when I started monitoring my bbt when trying to get pregnant. It helped me to know when my (very irregular) periods were due so I carried on. Took a break after my dd was born, but back to doing it again now for covid reasons.

CeeJay81 · 13/09/2020 12:03

No but while kids at school they get theirs checked every morning, as they go in. If one looked unwell or felt hot, then I would do.

QuacksInTheDark · 13/09/2020 12:05

No.i only check if they look unwell or are complaining of feeling unwell.

FinnyStory · 13/09/2020 12:06

No! The guidance says that a fever means the patient will be hot to touch, you don't need to know if they have a slightly raised temp. That way madness lies.

But maybe I'm the wrong person to ask. I've managed to raise two DC to adulthood without ever owning a thermometer.

doubleshotespresso · 13/09/2020 12:07

We invested in a no touch thermometer before schools returned and have all been doing temps morning and evening .
Just seems like a sensible approach

zafferana · 13/09/2020 12:07

Nope! Only do it if someone feels unwell, as raised temp is a reason to a) medicate and b) stay home from school.

cliffdiver · 13/09/2020 12:08

Twice, when doing DD2's hair, I noticed her head felt warmer than usual, so I checked her temperature.

But no, I'm not routinely checking.

JamSarnie · 13/09/2020 12:10

No. If I feel fine, feel well and don't feel hot or shivery I take it I don't need to take my temperature to confirm I am well.

overwork · 13/09/2020 12:11

No. I remember at the height of lockdown someone asked the OH nurses at work how we would know if we had a temperature and shouldn't come to work. She assured us if our temperature was that high we would definitely know about it

Grrretel · 13/09/2020 12:13

No, you can feel if they are feverish from touching them.

DappledThings · 13/09/2020 12:46

Nope. Only if anyone feels unusually warm to the touch. The handful of times we have done this year they haven't actually been raised anyway, just felt they were when feeling by hand.

I’m the same, I’ve never owned one ! You can tell if a child / adult is running a fever without a thermometer!
Waxonwaxoff0 · 13/09/2020 13:31

No. I can tell if any of us has a fever, don't need a thermometer.

Oopsiedaisyy · 13/09/2020 13:36

No

badlydrawnbear · 13/09/2020 13:51

No. I assumed that we would feel unwell if we had a fever, so it never occurred to me to do so.

Confuzzlediddled · 13/09/2020 13:58

No, even though I am extremely vulnerable I don't own a thermometer. DH was commentating on a football match yesterday and had his temp taken before he could enter, apparently it was 32, which shows the thermometer was probably crap or being wrongly used!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 13/09/2020 14:02

No kids but I take mine on the days I'm in the office but I don't have a thermometer at home

DominaShantotto · 13/09/2020 14:04

Not unless they're complaining of feeling ill - nope. Only bought a thermometer recently.

OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer · 13/09/2020 14:07

No. The thought never even occurred until now. My DC do have their temperature checked at the door of one of their activities though, with a nifty looking forehead thing.

LBOCS2 · 13/09/2020 14:26

Nope. We don't own a thermometer 🤷🏼‍♀️

CremeEggThief · 13/09/2020 14:28

Nope. There hasn't been a thermometer in the house since DS was about 5 (and even that wasn't the most fancy or reliable).

xyzandabc · 13/09/2020 14:32

We don't own a thermometer so no.
I did buy one when eldest was a baby (13 now) but we could never get it to say anyone was hotter than 34 so we binned it.
Look and touch can tell you if someone has a temperature.
