Are you routinely checking your/family's temperature?

Just wondering.

I've never checked my own temperature. I remember checking DC's once or twice when they were ill as babies, so I do have a thermometer somewhere. (Checking just confirmed that yes, they did have a temperature, so I haven't ever bothered since).

Since temperature is one of the three symptoms, are people checking routinely on otherwise well-seeming family members?

Or would you only check if your child seemed unwell and hot anyway? (In which case, it would be obvious they did have one anyway).

Only if someone feels hot. I always seem to be able guess quite well what the DC’s temperature is.

When DD3 was a little baby in hospital I could always tell when her fever was high and would get the nurses to take her temp again, even if it had been normal 10 mins before.

I check ds's fairly regularly, as he often has unusual episodes, and one of the causes can be that he is spiking a temperature. He also has frequent reflux and I am aware that this could cover the fact that he is unwell. He finds it hard to communicate how he is feeling so checking things like temp is a good indicator.

The dds, I don't tend to check unless they say they are feeling unwell.

jomaIone · 13/09/2020 14:51

Your 'normal' temp has absolutely no bearing what so ever on you having a fever. Checking your temp regularly is as good as thinking every morning 'have I got a sore throat?'

If you had fever, you would know about it! You'd feel like shite.

No

Occasionally tested at work

No

Not routinely but we did check each of us when we were feeling a bit rough just before showing symptoms of the dcs “back to school” cold. Normally I don’t bother.

@JayDot500

We have always regularly checked everyone's temperature. We have an in-ear thermometer, and used it maybe 3 times a week pre Covid. Nowadays we do it daily. My son enjoys it (he likes checking ours) so he usually prompts us to take it.
Why?!
SockQueen · 13/09/2020 15:58

No, only if I feel unwell, or if the kids feel hot/seem ill. I'm not going to have a temp over 38 without knowing about it.

DramaAlpaca · 13/09/2020 16:03

Nope, I've never owned a thermometer. I could always tell if the DC had a fever without one.

Funnily enough though, I was just saying to DH today that I might get one, as my work has asked us to check our temperatures before coming in every day.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 13/09/2020 16:09

Well if someone feels ill, I’ll stick a hand on their forehead

MNnicknameforCVthreads · 13/09/2020 16:12

Nope, we don’t own a thermometer.

PinkFondantFancy · 13/09/2020 16:13

No, you know when you or your children are unwell or have a fever, no need for routine temp taking

murgatroid · 13/09/2020 16:19

I've never owned a thermometer until this year, and my eldest is a teen. It's usually obvious if someone has a temperature. My MIL bought one for us during lockdown as she was worried we didn't have one.

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 13/09/2020 16:28

No. FFS.

Why? Why would you do this??

We have an in ear thermometer but I only use it if someone is actually unwell.

vodkaredbullgirl · 13/09/2020 16:30

Only when I have work, because we have to.

Sweetpopsicle · 13/09/2020 16:31

I have a high temp and horrid cough. My daughters teacher has been diagnosed so she is self isolating. I cannot book a test online and have been on hold for over an hour.

Im at my wits end trying to get an appy.

PrimalLass · 13/09/2020 16:46

No.

Doje · 13/09/2020 16:51

No, not routinely checking. Although I go into the office two days a week and it gets checked then.

We have bought a thermometer though. We didn't have one pre Covid and it was always a bit of a guessing game. Does he feel hot? I dunno. Does he to you? Err...maybe a bit? I'm not sure... maybe...? So hopefully next time it happens we'll have a definitive answer, especially as we're sending the kids into the cesspit of germs primary school.

PolarBearStrength · 13/09/2020 16:57

I will check DS if he is actually unwell or seems unusually grumpy. Usually just to check if he needs another dose of calpol/nurofen.

When I had a nasty cough last week I checked my temp a couple of times. I will occasionally check my temperature if unwell. If I’m calling the GP for example as they usually want to know.

@JayDot500 Can I ask why you do it so regularly, out of interest? Medical conditions or similar or something else?
crosser62 · 13/09/2020 17:05

No.
Have never owned a thermometer & don’t intend on getting one.

I just don’t see the point in them.

If unwell, have a feel of head, Calpol or paracetamol, but only if in pain or feeling uncomfortable because hot. job done.

RedToothBrush · 13/09/2020 17:23

The heat gun is for the pizza oven not people. And its staying that way.

I can not think of anything more paranoia inducing than checking your temperature daily. "Ooo i'm 0.2 degrees more than usual, i must be coming down with something." It would drive me nuts.

I find it very odd that others feel the need to do this! Would never have entered my head.

Baaaahhhhh · 13/09/2020 17:28

No, because just why? I am another one who has survived without a themometer with two DD's. If you have a temperature you know.

On other threads you have people lamenting the inability to get tested because they have a temp of 37.2 - how would you even know unless you are checking regularly. Just bonkers.

OverTheRainbow88 · 13/09/2020 17:30

I do before we see my mum who’s vulnerable and on nursery mornings
