Is the U.K. in danger of becoming a police state?

We have now been living with restrictions to our civil liberties for 6 months. The state now has the power to force us to dress in a certain way (face coverings), to restrict our right to family life (no more than 6 in social gatherings), to give up our personal details to retail establishments (contact details to restaurants/pubs), to give up our children’s right to a fair education (continued closures of schools following coronavirus cases), in some cases to give up our right to run a business or work (for example those businesses that can’t run properly due to social distancing etc), and now we have more police powers for enforcement of these rules and apparently “Covid Marshalls” to spy on people and control their behaviour. And there is no definite end point to any of this. None at all. There are vague “hopes” that the state will “try” to return to some kind of normal by a Christmas, but now that’s apparently dependent on regular mass testing - which in itself is a restriction on liberty. My worry is this: now that the state has realised it can control people in this way, will it give up those powers at all? Even if we get a vaccine, will the state actually give us back our freedom like it was before? And what if we never get a vaccine? People may say that all of this is justified by a virus (though a virus that has overall an extremely low fatality rate) but many governments throughout history have taken their citizens’ rights away permanently. How do we know our government won’t do the same?

Government says it will introduce covid restrictions.
People mock them and say it’s pointless as they won’t be policed.
Government attempts to actually police restrictions...people become horrified and start to object.

For better or worse (the former in my view) we had a softer lockdown than similarly-hit European countries. No locking up children in apartments, no timestamped slip needed before leaving the house, no roadblocks. A completely toothless quarantine procedure with a handful of people actually being fined. What we have had a summer of people taking the piss with the regulations and seemingly incapable of understanding them.

Mass gatherings /superspreader events are the main problem. It’s not rocket science.

clopper · 09/09/2020 21:31

Yes it’s like a police state I hate it. The Covid Marshall’s...what on earth!

Valleydad99 · 09/09/2020 21:32

Yes we are. We are in a fascist state now with no safeguards & no opposition to power. Civil liberties have been removed & no mp, red, white or yellow cares. I'm scared of the future honestly.

SqidgeBum · 09/09/2020 21:32

I agree. It really feels very Orwellian with the marshals, neighbours twitching curtains and reporting those who dont 'comply for the greater good of society', and people crippled with anxiety over breaking the rules. Christ, I had a woman in a card store today apologise like she had physically hurt someone because she accidentally missed a one way system! She was mortified.

The whole situation makes me very nervous for the future.

ShamPayne · 09/09/2020 21:32

It’s very worrying

Malachite234 · 09/09/2020 21:33

And why would the UK Government want to do that ? What do you propose is the rationale behind this ?

yawnsvillex · 09/09/2020 21:33

Yes. We are fucked. The public blindly following this shit are SO fucked.

Hospitals are empty.

Wake up U.K. before it's too late!

Pixxie7 · 09/09/2020 21:34

Not whilst we have a monarchy.

PushyMeez · 09/09/2020 21:35

I agree OP. Really wish I didn't. I don't like dwelling on it as the long term implications of these steps make me feel anxious.
The goal posts seem to keep changing and I'm really not sure what is we're aiming for at this stage - all I know is the restrictions keep coming (with enough backing from the public, which I find most chilling of all).

stovetopespresso · 09/09/2020 21:35

well if thats true maybe we got the government we deserved then @Leafyhouse

RhubarbTea · 09/09/2020 21:35

I agree completely, OP. It's insane how many of our rights have been eroded in such a short period of time.

cologne4711 · 09/09/2020 21:38

Not at all.

I've just been reading a twitter feed by someone from Jersey who currently lives in Kuwait. It makes even the Spanish lockdown look lax.

7 months' lockdown with three weeks total curfew. That's a police state.

stovetopespresso · 09/09/2020 21:41

yes we're not doing anything out of the ordonary restrictions wise compared with nearly all other eu countries, eg france, have a google

DarkHelmet · 09/09/2020 21:41

Very much so. And the fact that so many are willing to blindly accept it is horrifying in itself. Never has a virus been so vastly oversold to the public.

stovetopespresso · 09/09/2020 21:45

@DarkHelmet really? have u seen whats happening in America, u OK with that? I'm not.
vulnerable and elderly and frontline workers, bame dying? health service overwhelmed?

WingingItSince1973 · 09/09/2020 21:47

Um no. I have friends in Russia. They live in constant fear of being arrested for reasons we wouldn't even consider an offence. They have no freedom of speech or right to their peaceful way of life. They have no choice. Its the authorities way or prison. We are in the middle of a pandemic. Early on people on MN were crying out for lockdown and restrictions. Neighbours were willing to shop people they knew to the police if they dare leave their house more than twice a day. There was uproar that the government didn't impose mask wearing early on. We don't know half of whats going on behind the scenes. Why on earth would they want to impose these restrictions just for control? It makes no sense. Just do what we have to do to get through this. Stop being selfish and just tow the line for a few months and hope enough has been done to stop the devastating deaths we saw earlier on

Nicedayforawedding · 09/09/2020 21:49

Not a police state, that would be too organised. Maybe just a place where none of the rules make sense.

Doncaster Races - 1000s of people all in a mass gathering
Yet we now have the rule of 6, wtf

I have no idea how they will police this stuff

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 09/09/2020 21:49

No. These are temporary laws to protect us.

Samiad85 · 09/09/2020 21:50

Yes. I’m scared. Since the start of all this, today is the worst I’ve felt about it all.

Jaxhog · 09/09/2020 21:54

So what would you prefer? Anarchy? Mass deaths? Gilead?

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 09/09/2020 21:55

No. I’m sick of people comparing what’s happening to actual police states. The comparison makes me angry because it trivializes what really happens in police states- people are taken from their homes and shot; tortured, etc.

That isn’t happening.

fishywaters · 09/09/2020 21:56

No - our lockdown has been lax compared to many other countries. Current government far too disorganised to “police” every social gathering anyway - a bit like quarantine, nobody is actually checking. More “hot air” I reckon but people do need to be more careful before this spirals out of control again. Re restaurants, you are handing over your data so I hope most of them are aware of their data protection obligations.

fishywaters · 09/09/2020 21:58

No deal Brexit scares the s... out of me because this government is just not in control/on top of things. It is a sh..show currently and given corona we shouldn’t be bluffing at this stage even if we think it is a better negotiating strategy.

MrsGradyOldLady · 09/09/2020 22:02

Yes. And I do think this is the thin end of the wedge.

wafflyversatile · 09/09/2020 22:03

Putting aside this governments incompetence the first part of your post is bullshit conspiraloon nonsense. There is a global pandemic.

If you are actually worried about a police state you should be worried about their reactions to protests and demos and attempts to control the media.
