End social distancing now - it’s time to get back to normal

Four deaths from coronavirus were recorded on 5th September - and yet the economy is on its knees, businesses are folding and my GP refuses to do face to face appointments because of the supposed risks posed by this “deadly” disease. Whilst I have every sympathy for the families of those who died, there are more people killed on Britain’s roads each day than there are from Covid.

People said there would be a massive spike in cases/deaths after the BLM protests and guess what - that failed to materialise. Central London was packed when I was there last weekend so nobody is taking the virus seriously anyway. AIBU to think it’s time we end this social distancing farce now and get back to normal, before more people lose their jobs and homes and the economy tanks still further?

YABU. You obviously don’t understand the 4 cases probably caught it 28 days ago or so. So the current sharp rise we are seeing now won’t translate to possible hospital cases/deaths for a while

In the meantime schools are back, local lockdowns are being lifted or started, cases are continuing to rise, and will rise even more sharply if SD is lifted

We are in the middle of a worldwide pandemic, of a new virus that not a lot is known about

Businesses are reopening and that’s with SD in place.

If your GP refuses to do face to face that’s up to him, ours do face to face appointments, we have to wear masks, so go complain to the local commissioning group about him

Floralbean · 07/09/2020 18:27

OP I’d expect you to access health care beyond your GP, tbh

Surely the risk is heightened by people going to A&E etc rather than their own GP surgeries? I can't see that logic making any sense at all, it's ridiculous that some are still 'closed'.

Floralbean · 07/09/2020 18:28

I've actually considered suicide several times because of these restrictions on my life. I can't do this much longer.

Sorry to hear you are struggling Flowers. You are right there are implications of lockdown beyond covid, and some people seem to forget that. At a guess it is because they aren't affected by those and so covid is all that they see as a risk.

peasoup8 · 07/09/2020 18:28

Like what exactly? Do you expect me to go sit for hours in A&E with a small baby because my GP refuses to do her job?

Chloe the gov have already confirmed that the high cases are almost all mild or asymtomatic

There’s been no major increase in admissions

Thus no increase in deaths

Try not to be despondent, lots of progress appears to be being made in terms of vaccines, treatments and testing. I am optimistic that things will start to improve.
ihatelockdown · 07/09/2020 18:29

Absolutely agree with you! I don't think there's going to be a second wave at all

LadyofTheManners · 07/09/2020 18:29

It's just been released that despite the case numbers rising, the positive cases make up 2.5% of all results. In March it was 40%. If you did the figures like for like with averages, the number of positives would still have been significantly higher from March to May than they are now.
More testing and more accessible testing will always mean more cases being picked up.
I'm not suggesting everything needs to be revoked, but the threat of national lockdown just isn't a good idea financially, health wise or mental health wise.

Ethelfleda · 07/09/2020 18:29

@Pobblebonk

And far too many people suffering long term consequences of lock down and the economy tanking...

It doesn't quite equate to having your health destroyed. Given the choice, would you really prefer being in a long-term minimally-conscious state to having financial problems?

But some people will have their health compromised if they can’t get in to see a GP!

Kittens that’s so hard. I think that for many people it would be very difficult (especially if alone)
pushkinsinsanity · 07/09/2020 18:30

Central London was packed when I was there last weekend so nobody is taking the virus seriously anyway.

That's a ridiculous thing to say, the people you saw aren't taking it seriously (and neither are you). People like you are the ones who are responsible for the increase in cases and the ones who are stopping life going back to normal when it is essential, my mother hasn't been able to have her consultant appointment for her kidney and skin cancer and that is because of people like you who think they can selfishly do what they like.

My mother's check up is more important than anybody going shopping, on holiday or to the pub.

Mywifeandkids1 · 07/09/2020 18:30

@gypsywater what are you not understanding.... cases are going up! So please tell me how your measures you talk so fondly of have helped??

peasoup8 · 07/09/2020 18:31

Surely the risk is heightened by people going to A&E etc rather than their own GP surgeries?

Exactly - I’d love @nibdedibble to explain the difference.

@peasoup8
I agree.

YouJustDoYou · 07/09/2020 18:31

Completely agree.

EDSGFC · 07/09/2020 18:32

@Vinoonasunnyday

Chloe the gov have already confirmed that the high cases are almost all mild or asymtomatic

There’s been no major increase in admissions

Thus no increase in deaths

But is that because of the profile of the population currently infected ie young, fit? Plus what long term implications are there of infection in this group? Reports are coming out of increases in diabetes, heart and lung problems, POTS - what's the percentage affected and the long term prognosis?
Vinoonasunnyday · 07/09/2020 18:32

My wife

Case positivity has gone up 0.3%!!! Hardly anything

Theyre just testing more

gypsywater · 07/09/2020 18:32

@Mywifeandkids1 Surely its obvious, any increase is due to the measures not being followed as they should? Its simple surely.

AmelieTaylor · 07/09/2020 18:33
@CovidHalloween as stated up— thread, it’s my baby not being able to see my GP and the ridiculous inconsistency of it all that’s bothering me. And secondary to that, the fact that I could lose my job and my home.

OP, it must be so hard to live in such a state of anger.

My baby’s health is not being taken seriously by my GP. I’m not just angry about that - I’m totally fecking livid. What the hell do you expect @nibdedibble?
Then why was your AIBU this?

AIBU to think it’s time we end this social distancing farce now and get back to normal, before more people lose their jobs and homes and the economy tanks still further?

Nothing to do with your baby.

Your GP not seeing your baby is nothing to do with the Govt & something to take up with your practice, not stomp about SD should be stopped???

Mywifeandkids1 · 07/09/2020 18:33

@Vinoonasunnyday I know, just trying to prove these measures are irrelevant

Vinoonasunnyday · 07/09/2020 18:34

The long term implications or those who survive are nothing compared to the increased deaths of all diseases etc we will have as a direct result of this lockdown

gypsywater · 07/09/2020 18:34

@Mywifeandkids1 You genuinely believe the measures have done nothing?! Nothing since March?!

Vinoonasunnyday · 07/09/2020 18:35

Sorry misread!

easythatsfragile · 07/09/2020 18:35

It's too soon.

The graph is on an obvious upward trend again. Latest deaths being 4 is a 100% increase on the previous day's 2.

Carry on with 100% increase a day like that and it will be in the hundreds by this time next week, and thousands in the weeks after.

Mywifeandkids1 · 07/09/2020 18:36

@gypsywater lockdown perhaps, the rest, nope!
