End social distancing now - it’s time to get back to normal

Four deaths from coronavirus were recorded on 5th September - and yet the economy is on its knees, businesses are folding and my GP refuses to do face to face appointments because of the supposed risks posed by this “deadly” disease. Whilst I have every sympathy for the families of those who died, there are more people killed on Britain’s roads each day than there are from Covid.

People said there would be a massive spike in cases/deaths after the BLM protests and guess what - that failed to materialise. Central London was packed when I was there last weekend so nobody is taking the virus seriously anyway. AIBU to think it’s time we end this social distancing farce now and get back to normal, before more people lose their jobs and homes and the economy tanks still further?

To be honest I things things are fine as they are. We can still do most of the things we need to do. The only things I’d like to see going back to normal are medical appointments and support for families in need.

Floralbean · 07/09/2020 16:43

GP is doing apps here, they do phone back first if it's not just a routine app, but it's better to be honest, and if you're happy to do it over the phone they can do that which for some things is better.

puffinkoala · 07/09/2020 16:46

We don't need to end social distancing but we need to stop the hysterical reaction from GPs. As you say, for most people it's not deadly but other things are. You can provide care perfectly well with minimal risk.

secretllama · 07/09/2020 16:48

People asking what you cant do normal ... how about the fact you're not allowed a group of friends together in your own house.... yeah you're right life is pretty normal now 🤣🙄 no weddings (and I mean normal weddings not this spaced out seating wearing masks weddings), birthday parties, going out without prebooking everything!! Life is NOT normal.

Lucked · 07/09/2020 16:48

There was only one death on the 8th March but over a thousand on the 9th April.

I don’t think we will get back there but the idea we can now all return to normal is ridiculous. Only way to keep transmission low is maintaining a degree of social distancing. The lack of deaths means we are doing something right. I am not overtly panicked by the increasing cases but we need to watch the numbers. Schools and unis going back is enough of a change at the moment.

I'd quite like to get back to my theatre groups at some point. Performing is my passion and I am desperately missing it. So, for me, things aren't 'fine as they are'.

Totally agree. We need to get a grip and get back to normal. Death rate is absurdly low in comparison to the over reaction to it. I honestly think all this sitting around waiting for the death rate to rise is bonkers and indulgent. Whoever said we’ve been told it will rise after every demo etc is absolutely right. It hasn’t risen yet still we sit here blindly following the utter nonsense the government puts out.

peasoup8 · 07/09/2020 16:50

This. My GP is about as far from an “NHS hero” as you can get - she wouldn’t even see my baby when my child was unwell and I was left to diagnose the issue myself. The government should force them all back to work and by that I mean offering face to face appointments.

Hell yes OP!

Yup. I’m really glad the BLM protests went ahead, despite the Covid fanatics’ best efforts.

I agree.

Tootletum · 07/09/2020 16:53

I think it's likely more people will die. Of all sorts of things. Like they do every day, and particularly in winter. Meningitis is contagious, particularly in students, and often fatal even in young people. Nobody ever lost their job or couldn't go out because of that.

Cornettoninja · 07/09/2020 16:53

How are people not making the very simple connection between measures like social distancing, masks etc. equaling low deaths?

Only 5 people a day die in road accidents - why do you need to wear a seatbelt.

It’s blood tiring. This isn’t all going to be finished just because you want it to be.

Bluemooninmyeyes1 · 07/09/2020 16:55

I don’t think they’ll have a choice soon. I don’t know anyone who is actually sticking to the ‘rules’ anymore now.

Oh, but on MN, everyone is.
Inkpaperstars · 07/09/2020 16:59

Oh how we do love to unite against an imaginary enemy

Some of my medic friends have emerged from this year looking shell shocked. I double dare you to say this to their faces. They can tell you in highly graphic detail just how 'imaginary' it is.

Cornettoninja · 07/09/2020 17:00

Death rate is absurdly low in comparison to the over reaction to it

The death rate isn’t the problem, spread over time it’s more than manageable, but how do you control that (Go on - I’ll wait)?

1% of a 66million+ population is an absurd number of deaths over the space of a few months which we haven’t got the infrastructure to deal with in the best of circumstances and certainly not while the other 59% of the population is off ill (and I’m being generous allowing for 40% asymptomatic).

You’ve spectacularly missed the point.

peasoup8 · 07/09/2020 17:00

I don’t either. Many people are socialising with others as they did before lockdown. When I was in London there were people who weren’t bothering to wear masks on public transport, and most people weren’t wearing them on the fairly crowded pavements. Despite this there’s been no spike in cases.

How are people not making the very simple connection between measures like social distancing, masks etc. equaling low deaths?

See above.

I agree with you.

MarshaBradyo · 07/09/2020 17:01

I’m in London and people are wearing masks. I’d say 95% are where they need to.

Sennetti · 07/09/2020 17:03

is the baby needing to actually be seen??

Well we’re fucked then aren’t we? Just because people can’t comprehend a situation could happen to them.
MorrisZapp · 07/09/2020 17:03

Everything's open? Why are there mass job losses announced every day then? Pret is on its knees because people aren't going back to work. Pubs are open for those who like to forward plan their drinking habits and sit at booked tables. Nobody can try on clothes in the shops.

This is not normality, or anything like it.

midgebabe · 07/09/2020 17:04

I have travelled a bit this last 2 week

On the whole distancing and masks and caution has been seen everywhere

The only exception that I have seen is groups of teenagers

How old are you OP?
