End social distancing now - it’s time to get back to normal

Four deaths from coronavirus were recorded on 5th September - and yet the economy is on its knees, businesses are folding and my GP refuses to do face to face appointments because of the supposed risks posed by this “deadly” disease. Whilst I have every sympathy for the families of those who died, there are more people killed on Britain’s roads each day than there are from Covid.

People said there would be a massive spike in cases/deaths after the BLM protests and guess what - that failed to materialise. Central London was packed when I was there last weekend so nobody is taking the virus seriously anyway. AIBU to think it’s time we end this social distancing farce now and get back to normal, before more people lose their jobs and homes and the economy tanks still further?

Well, we have a nice little experiment going on at the moment with the removal of social distancing- schools.
My children's school has been open for three days (including today) and they've already had to send two year groups home due to covid-19 positive tests.
We'll see how many others who've been in contact with those children come down with symptoms.

Chosennone · 07/09/2020 18:12

I honestly think we need to keep this up. It's certainly better than a full lockdown, it's sad, weird and lots of places don't feel the same and I'm nostalgic for the old way but I do feel it has to be done. We can't have people, even elderly dying in pain, unable to have care.

Mywifeandkids1 · 07/09/2020 18:14

@Cornettoninja if the low deaths are due to all the measures in place .... WHY are cases going up ?? 🤨

DoubleDolphin · 07/09/2020 18:15

You know it's not just about the deaths dont you? It isnt either no symptoms or death, there is a massive inbetween. People are ill for months and months on end and then end up with life changing injuries. Do you want that for yourself, your kids or your family? Do you want to have to go on a ventilator? Have you even looked at the number of cases per day? They have been rising for weeks now and the last 2 days it's been close to 3000 new cases a day. The death figures are not going to stay low.

GP hiding behind a phone Grin
I cant deal with people as thick as the OP

peasoup8 · 07/09/2020 18:17

@CovidHalloween as stated up— thread, it’s my baby not being able to see my GP and the ridiculous inconsistency of it all that’s bothering me. And secondary to that, the fact that I could lose my job and my home.

OP, it must be so hard to live in such a state of anger.

My baby’s health is not being taken seriously by my GP. I’m not just angry about that - I’m totally fecking livid. What the hell do you expect @nibdedibble?

"God cases are not rising!!"
Yes, they are.

"How many times!!!!

Testing has doubled since month or so ago!"
Nope. Testing has been stable for a while now.

@gypsywater That’s ironic coming from someone who can’t even use an apostrophe correctly Hmm

I would be angry if my sick baby couldn't see the GP too. I probably wouldn't extend that anger to 'let's just pretend covid isn't happening and scrap all the measures we're doing to control spread' though.

Itsjustabitofbanter · 07/09/2020 18:19

7 of my local schools have closed today due to coronavirus outbreaks. They’ve only been open since Wednesday.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 07/09/2020 18:21

So cases have gone up whilst we are told that wearing masks prevents the spread? Not hugging your nearest and dearest prevents the spread, social distancing prevents the spread....so why with all these things in place are cases still rising? Surely if those worked then cases would be going down?

gypsywater · 07/09/2020 18:21

@peasoup8 Grin right you are

EDSGFC · 07/09/2020 18:21
@Cornettoninja if the low deaths are due to all the measures in place .... WHY are cases going up ?? 🤨
Because the people currently being infected are, in the main, the young who are unlikely to die. However, it doesn't take Einstein to work out that the infections won't stay in that population forever and will start trickling down to.infect the more vulnerable, including the elderly, pregnant women, chronically sick and so on. As a society we are all interconnected and it's not difficult to identify routes of transmission.

Mywifeandkids1 · 07/09/2020 18:22

@trappedsincesundaymorn exactly

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 07/09/2020 18:22

My kids have been back at primary and secondary for a month now (scotland) no rise, no increase in cases, no teachers dropping like flies

Mywifeandkids1 · 07/09/2020 18:22

@EDSGFC totally missed the point 🤔

JayDot500 · 07/09/2020 18:23

@secretllama

People asking what you cant do normal ... how about the fact you're not allowed a group of friends together in your own house.... yeah you're right life is pretty normal now 🤣🙄 no weddings (and I mean normal weddings not this spaced out seating wearing masks weddings), birthday parties, going out without prebooking everything!! Life is NOT normal.
Maybe you're not following the US news, but whenever Covid entered these scenarios, whole families had to face Covid together and often lost a family member, or more. Quite a few stories like this if you look.

Would you want to remember your wedding/birthday party in this way?

Vinoonasunnyday · 07/09/2020 18:23

Double dolphin

See tests are rising by the day

Because people are spreading it amongst the people they live with or by socialising in larger groups, breaking SD rules, having parties. People continuing to SD, wearing masks etc are likely helping to suppress it right now.
Namenic · 07/09/2020 18:23

OP - Maybe deaths will not climb, but maybe they will. You’re risking an awful lot. If you look at US states opening up and what is happening in Europe, I think being more cautious is sensible (especially if we have had recent large changes like schools starting).

Yes, seeing patients will give you more info. However it also increases the risk of transmission - not just to you and your child, but to all the other patients the GP sees. Who are more likely going to be in the elderly and vulnerable groups. It is a risk benefit call and if you feel your child needs to be seen, do ask for a second opinion, call 111 or go to a&e if this is urgent.

nibdedibble · 07/09/2020 18:24

OP I’d expect you to access health care beyond your GP, tbh. Pretending this is a mild illness for everyone is just thick.

giantangryrooster · 07/09/2020 18:24

@Northernsoullover
Denmark, fatalities not high yet. But due to testing you see more young people being positive than in spring, where the positive ones were those in hospital due to fewer tests being carried out then.

gypsywater · 07/09/2020 18:24

Genuinely shocked that there are people - ADULTS - who cannot understand that the current rates are low DUE TO the measures in place. How is it hard to understand?! Its basic logic.

gypsywater · 07/09/2020 18:25

@FlySheMust
Terrifying. The vote and the ability to be a jury member. Chilling.

kittensarecute · 07/09/2020 18:26

I've actually considered suicide several times because of these restrictions on my life. I can't do this much longer.
