End social distancing now - it’s time to get back to normal

Four deaths from coronavirus were recorded on 5th September - and yet the economy is on its knees, businesses are folding and my GP refuses to do face to face appointments because of the supposed risks posed by this “deadly” disease. Whilst I have every sympathy for the families of those who died, there are more people killed on Britain’s roads each day than there are from Covid.

People said there would be a massive spike in cases/deaths after the BLM protests and guess what - that failed to materialise. Central London was packed when I was there last weekend so nobody is taking the virus seriously anyway. AIBU to think it’s time we end this social distancing farce now and get back to normal, before more people lose their jobs and homes and the economy tanks still further?

I still think it’s time to end this bollocks and get back to normal!

NerrSnerr · 08/11/2020 15:03

@HeyBaby2020 have you read the thread? 8 weeks ago 4 people in a day died. It's now 400. What do you think will happen if we go back to normal?

AlphaJura · 08/11/2020 15:19

Tbh I'm happy to keep the social distancing rules in public forever! 😂. I get social anxiety and claustrophobic with people crowding me and getting in my face and talking to me. I love it that I can just drop dd off at the door of nursery (so much quicker and easier) and if I had primary school dcs, it would suit me that I wouldn't have to stand around chit chatting small talk. I used to deliberately just leave enough time so I wouldn't have to do that. I found it excruciating.

boohooyoutoo · 08/11/2020 15:27

It absolutely sucks OP. I'm struggling to cope mentally.

I don't understand why vulnerable cannot shield.

I don't understand why they did eat out help out.

I don't understand why ventilators cannot be produced on mass for people to treat themselves at home if they get it - surely much cheaper than furlough?

I don't understand any of it.

I just don't fucking get it, I feel like we are being withheld information - none of it makes any sense to me.

If you genuinely don't understand then do some research.

Ventilators at home? Do you even know what one is?!

MushMonster · 08/11/2020 15:33

5th September seems so long ago! This is a reminder of how fast this virus spreadsSad

This should get an award for the stupidest post on the internet, who knew someone could beat Trump 🤷🏻‍♀️

boohooyoutoo · 08/11/2020 15:41

Yes I do know what ventilators are - I've HAD one at home.

Do you know what's more stupid than my post?

The whole country not being able to leave their home except for exercise and essential work - that's stupid.

Oh and I will tell you what's more stupid, only a few weeks ago the country being incentivised to 'eat out and help out' and spread the 'deadly virus'!!!!!!

Utterly ridiculous.

There's a lot you don't understand. Perhaps you are just stupid.

Do you even know what a ventilator is? Do you seriously think that an untrained person can set one up? It's not just a mask you know.

As for EOTHO, no one forced anyone to crowd outside fast food joints and jostle eachother to get in for a half price burger. Anyone with any sense would have seen the queue, seen that they were busy inside and gone elsewhere. Govt said what people "could" do, it didn't force them to do it!

lunar1 · 08/11/2020 15:45

Ventilators in itu are a completely different thing than somebody having a long-standing vent at home. Even then they would be supervised by someone trained and experienced.

Treat themselves at home with ventilators?! That's your serious suggestion? Must have heard it all now.Hmm
Chestnutsandsprouts · 08/11/2020 15:49

@boohooyoutoo I don't know what the right thing to do is with regards to restrictions etc etc but you are misunderstanding how ITU ventilation works - patients are put under general anaesthesia and intubated - how could that be done at home?

JeannieTheZebra · 08/11/2020 15:50

@boohooyoutoo you’re getting confused between nebulisers and ventilators. A nebuliser is a mask connected to oxygen or medication helping you to breathe. A lot of people have nebs at home or have been treated with one at home-my mum has one under the bed; that’s not hugely unusual for severe asthma. A ventilator is a tube down the throat, breathing for you. You have to be sedated and it’s seriously invasive. There’s a huge huge difference between the two.

www.nihr.ac.uk/news/life-saving-breathing-aid-developed-to-keep-covid-19-patients-out-of-intensive-care/24542

...but instead paying everyone's wages and making it illegal to leave the house sounds like a good suggestion?!!

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 08/11/2020 15:55

I think YABU. Why can't we get back to as normal as possible while taking precautions such as masks, hand hygiene and social distancing ie 2m from other folk in shops etc? Not too much of a hardship.

Eckhart · 08/11/2020 15:55

@peasoup8

So, do you think that, if we stopped all restrictions, the cases and subsequently, the deaths, would not rise?

boohooyoutoo · 08/11/2020 15:57

I know a CPAP machine is different to a ventilator, but clearly makes a significant difference to the need for a ventilator so why has this not been a consideration when people use these machines a the time at home for other illnesses

And you can get ventilators at home, please do a simple google search.

boohooyoutoo · 08/11/2020 15:58

@Chestnutsandsprouts it doesn't have to be the same as an ITU one - there are many different types of ventilators

I've been ventilated in icu and I can say with a near 100% certainty that not a single member of my family could anaesthetise me and put tubes down. A family friend 'might' just be able to being a doctor but I'd still be a bit worried they'd fuck it up.

But yes this is a very sobering thread that in just a few short weeks it's all going out of control again.

I'm vulnerable. I'm also heavily pregnant, high risk too. What do you suggest I do? Free birth? Because currently I'm being checked weekly in the hospital, meaning that I see several health professionals that can infect me. I need people to keep them safe so they can keep me safe. The vulnerable need health care too.

This.

We should give people ventilators for home use. We should also post them out the drugs that they need to put themselves into an induced coma at home, whilst under ventilation should it be necessary. To make it safe, we'll send out an instruction leaflet along with it.

And to answer your question of "I don't understand why vulnerable cannot shield." Vulnerable people can shield. But they may need carers in their houses, they may need to shop to get food if they're unable to get deliveries (and even if they can get deliveries, they're still in contact with the delivery person), loads of reasons why they'll still need to be in contact with other people, even if they are shielding. They can't just lock their front door and keep it locked till next year.

@TheSeedsOfADream and you do clearly, good for you.

I do understand thank you very much I was using a figure of speech to express my dissatisfaction and anger at the situation.

JeannieTheZebra · 08/11/2020 16:07

@boohooyoutoo Most home ventilators are very similar to nebulisers, in that they use masks, except they’re meant for longer use, usually overnight, and are supposed to help treat someone who’s long term very sick. They’re absolutely not meant for treating someone who’s quickly deteriorating from an infectious disease. If you’re sick enough from COVID to need oxygen then you absolutely should be in hospital; that’s totally different to someone who has an ongoing condition.
