Covid

Do people actually realise how few are dying from coronavirus now?

It’s all still doom and gloom on the news as normal regarding coronavirus. Loads about cases going up, local lockdowns, negativity regarding schools going back but nothing about the fact that hardly anyone is actually dying from coronavirus or being admitted to hospital. Can we not hear about positive things for once?

@AlecTrevelyan006 - I was trying to explain it as simply as possible!

Cavil if you will!

People are semi compliant now

Furlough ends soon

Employers will want to recoup their losses and debt for the last 6 months

No one has acted yet but they will and millions will be made redundant

Businesses can’t return to normal with distancing

No normal means for many less staff

Let’s see how much people want all these measures then

Suddenly 5/6 deaths a day doesn’t seem so bad

Out of 67 MILLION

@Vinoonasunnyday

Oh cherry please

Look at hospital figures

They’re ridiculous for a country of 67 million

I look at mortality figures. Deaths over 28 days re not reported as coronovirus deaths. Hospitals are not where most deaths occur.

@CuriousaboutSamphire
And a winter outbreak could increase infection rates enough to put the NHS back under breaking strain
When was the nhs ever under breaking strain?

So just to check, your genuine belief is if we stop social distancing etc., the number of cases and deaths won't rise?

For the record, I don't 'want' any of the measures.

@CherryPavlova the figures have been low for weeks now. It's absolutely ridiculous the way people are still acting 🐑 and moaning about going back to work

Deaths over 28 days are not reported as coronavirus deaths
This isn't true. If coronavirus is listed on the death certificate as a cause of death it will still be recorded under CV stats, no matter how long ago the person tested positive. It won't be recorded under those stats if the person died of other causes, unless the person had a positive test in the last 28 days.

People like OP really don't understand exponential growth. It creeps up on you before you know it.

On March 6th the UK reported its first coronavirus death. Three weeks later that figure was around 460 deaths in total. By April 1st the UK was reporting 500 deaths a day.

So yes, if your deaths are starting to rise rapidly, you're kind of already screwed.

Figures are very low at the moment and this is a good thing.

We've all played a part in getting them to these low levels.

I'll be following what the public health people say (those with access to the real raw data).

I don't think we are necessarily out of the woods as yet and I suspect there will be a second wave in time for winter.

Life however seems largely to have returned to normal locally. Businesses are still open and the only one we lost was a big company store who were always empty before lockdown.
Am amazed they didn't close before.

Well I realised. They announce deaths alongside the cases daily.

All info also on their dashboard.

Why would you assume people don't know?

To be fair all hospital deaths are still counted regardless of when the positive test was taken. You can also still find the 60 day COVID test data as well out there

@ChanceEncounter

if we stop social distancing etc., the number of cases and deaths will probably rise

But the fact of life is that every country since the dawn of time there has always been an ‘acceptable’ number of deaths - there has to be, otherwise the world would come to a standstill.

And I would that we are now at the point where the number of deaths from coronavirus is acceptable

@Mrschickpeabody

I suddenly realised that they’re quarantining people from Portugal because cases are 20 per 100,000. It’s crazy 0.02%. You’d think it was ripping through the island killing everyone the way they’re reporting it.

You do realise the measures are in fact to stop this very thing.

Like we had back in feb/March?

Because you seem to think you're the only one who noticed death rates are low I take it you understand all the science?

"I look at mortality figures. Deaths over 28 days re not reported as coronovirus deaths. Hospitals are not where most deaths occur"

Were the government going to publish the 60 day figure as well at one point? Maybe then we could see how many people get run over by a bus after a positive test

Evidently the government feels that precautions are warranted given the potential for a large number of further deaths. If the pattern of low deaths stays the same once we get to October/ November then maybe things will relax

Hospital admissions and deaths are not increasing

The numbers of daily positive tests has increased a little bit (nationally) but is not showing any sign of exponential growth

It's doom and gloom because this is still a really shit situation. The measures we have taken have brought our numbers down, great. And as a result we are able to do more things.

But given the virus is still having to be heavily controlled, we can't afford to stop any of these measures now. That sucks.

And we are coming up to Winter, which will complicate things. So numbers fluctuating IS doom and gloom. It hasn't gone away and so neither will social distancing for the time being, which has huge implications for businesses and people.

Report
Vinoonasunnyday · 02/09/2020 17:09

Most deaths are still in hospitals actually

Deaths in care homes were ‘suspected’ deaths as almost none had test or treatment for that matter

Deaths over 28 days are not inc in one of the TWO figures released because after 28 days all their data shows that death wasn’t caused by covid but people died with it

There’s a difference

itsgettingweird · 02/09/2020 17:10
