Surely shops aren't allowed to do this?

Our local post office/store has got a sign up outside stating that everyone entering must wear a mask and that exempt people must show proof of exemption before entering. It then goes on to list proof of exemption as :

A doctor's note on headed paper
Exemption letter from DWP
Hidden disabilities exemption card

If you cannot wear a mask and do not have any of these then you are not allowed to enter. They have, so generously, said that children under the age of 11 do not need to show proof.

I am not exempt, neither is anyone in my family, and we all happily wear masks no problem. It just doesn't seem right or fair that someone should have to show medical or personal documents to someone in a shop!

"They could be the very same people hissing abuse for all we know."

People do not hiss abuse because they have asd or adhd. That comment is ablist. It is better not to make comments about things you know nothing about.

QuestionMarkNow · 03/09/2020 11:02

If someone cannot control themselves enough to stop harassing other people, they shouldn't be allowed out.

The whole system is based on the idea that social pressure will be enough to make people wear masks..
Social pressure is what is stopping me from asking to jump the queue to go in a shop because I can’t stand for so long. I KNOW I will get the looks and the tutting etc... so I don’t go out shopping.
But that only works BECAUSE people are judging away and are making comments.
Add to that that some people will genuinely be horrified someone isn’t wearing a mask and you have the perfect recipe for making genuine people uncomfortable.

This is how BRITISH society is working a lot of the time btw. It’s the same with queuing for example....

Underhisi · 03/09/2020 11:10

Some people must live in some really unpleasant places because where I live if someone made comments about someone asking to jump a queue, the one making the comments would be judged. The society you describe isn't my British society.

Underhisi · 03/09/2020 11:13

It is noticeable that the genuinely horrified, so horrified they have to harass people, only seem to target people more vulnerable looking than themselves.

Nothing you have written in this thread suggests you're remotely qualified to accurately identify ablism vodka.

Someone hissing at you could be shut down by wearing a badge and a very loud 'don't you dare abuse me, I can not wear a mask and am exempt!'

I was wearing a lanyard. It's bright green and yellow and says I'm exempt but that's evidently not good enough for some people.

In France, people who are exempt dont have a badge. But they have a letter of exemption that you produce if anyone is asking you why you don’t have a mask

Why on earth would you imagine I would be happy to show the sort of person who hisses abuse at women in public a letter detailing my medical history? Quite apart from the fact that a) hardly anybody has heard of my condition, much less know why it would make me exempt and b) my medical history is none of his business, I'm not required to show ANYBODY proof of exemption.

Imagine showing somebody like a that a letter which states that the holder is exempt due to PTSD resulting from rape. Imagine living in a world where some people think that that's acceptable. Oh, wait...

Incidentally, my friends in France tell me that NOBODY there would be expected to show proof of exemption to some random bloke in a shop. As if people can demand doctor's notes from complete strangers Hmm

The letter doesn’t detail medical history saying WHY you are exempt! It says you are exempt. A bit like a blue badge doesn’t say what the disability is, it just shows you are entitled to park in disabled spots etc.

But why would you be expected to show a complete stranger - not even shop staff - something like this?

Given the huge number of people who believe that many people on disability benefits etc are lying pisstakers I'm not sure it'd be much use anyway.

But the point still remains that in the UK we're not required to show ANYONE any form of proof. Which is just as well, given that most GPs charge around £15 to write a letter and that's a lot of money to a lot of people.

Perhaps people should just mind their own business and be less judgemental - by far the simplest solution.

Right wingers who believe this are also a lot of the ones repeating the "all in this together" rhetoric. Yet when this is all over you can bet those goalposts will move yet again.

How the FUCK do you know that? Really? You don't. You are jumping to nasty conclusions based on what your biases are. Anyone that dares to disagree with your sanctimonious claptrap is shut down with accusations of being ablist. You should be ashamed of yourself for using a disability to point score like that.

Well no, according to quite a few people actually, not just me. The various disabled people and family members who have told you about it and explained why, and the multiple deletions you've managed to incur for shitting all over the MN guidelines on the matter (and you're probably in for another one there incidentally, given the personal attack- you get quite nasty when challenged, it seems). You keep digging the hole though.
