Has anyone called out mask slip ups in shops?

160 replies

Dollyparton3 · 28/08/2020 16:01

I use the term "slip ups" politely.

Last week in Matalan, man at the tills with his family had pulled his mask down to his chin. Another woman walking round the store with it pulled under her nose so her moutb was covered but nothing else.

Yesterday a couple in an antique shop both pulled their masks down then took them off whilst walking around the shop. I get very huffy and loud every time I see it but what I really want to do is call it out and ask them to "put the mask on properly or leave the shop". Is it just me? Does anyone have any witty suggestions of how to suggest to people that they follow the guidelines properly for the good of everyone?

Call out culture is giving certain kinds of people free rein to act like complete arseholes.

@PhilCornwall1

Blimey Phil, that's a bit strong. What with you being a nun and all that...

Pinkbunny2811 · 28/08/2020 20:46

Wow. Why is everyone so angry? I know it's uncomfortable but I've been wearing one since March for work and I'm thankful to have not caught Covid as I've seen what it's done to people I work with and I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

OP - just don't bother saying anything as clearly someone might punch you. It is very annoying when people wear it on their chin though. I actually saw a woman wearing it on her chin and buying another one 🤦🏻‍♀️

EarringsandLipstick · 28/08/2020 20:51

@TrickyKid

You'd probably huff at me. I can only wear it a short while before my glasses steam up so do sometimes take it off in shops so I can actually see!
There's loads of advice on this - wash your glasses with washing up liquid before going out. No steaming up.
EarringsandLipstick · 28/08/2020 20:54

@QueenBlueberries

EarringandLipstick, there is no point in trying to have a sensible discussion about face masks on here. You are making perfect sense, but you will be shut down in a minute by anti masks.

My favourite moment recently was going into Homesense where they are making sure people are wearing masks to go in and finding one woman with hers round her chin burying her nose in scented candle after scented candle. Yes, masks are sweaty, claustrophobic and annoying but it has been proved that they help restrict viral load. All this talk about hitting people for pointing out masks aren't being worn properly etc! It's bloody shocking and sadly points the way to us not coming out of this thing any time soon if people patently think masks are 'useless' or 'a joke'. They are a minor inconvenience to most - do you think WW2 civilians made as much fuss about gas masks?

Byallmeans · 28/08/2020 20:58

So odd that no one wears them in busy pubs and nobody bats an eye...

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/08/2020 20:59

do you think WW2 civilians made as much fuss about gas masks?

TBF gas was never used on civilians in the UK so it's not really comparable.

Babyboomtastic · 28/08/2020 21:07

Had masks only protected the wearer. Or was an individual's rush to take. wearing a mask protects others and not you, so it becomes less of a personal choice and more of a civic duty.

Babyboomtastic · 28/08/2020 21:07

Gas masks.

DullDullWeather · 28/08/2020 21:09

Who made you the Mask Police ?

Get your head out your arse, you are talking nonsense

Please don't do this if you have coatings on your glasses. You will trash them. Voice of experience here.

No busy pubs in Ireland. 'Wet' pubs are closed indefinitely. Pubs serving food can open with strict restrictions & time limits.

Table service only. No one can get up & walk around or go to the bar. Mask on to go to toilets.

Oops sorry!

Here's a link from Specsavers that might help

Honestly, whilst I internally get a bit rolley eyed when I see people wearing masks incorrectly, I just let em crack on. People can be very unpredictable when challenged in public, just because you’re reasonable doesn’t mean others are.

InFiveMins · 28/08/2020 21:27

Grow up. Biscuit

Autumnsloth · 28/08/2020 21:31

Thank god for you OP saving us all from certain death one witty comment at a time. Being berated and told to leave by a stranger who has to get her quips off the internet is exactly what people with possible medical or psychological reasons to not wear a mask need.

minnieok · 28/08/2020 21:56

We just laugh, it's ridiculous that my light chiffon scarf counts as a face covering anyway! Our favourite thing though is spotting the ott mask people - a guy in full nuclear warfare suit in Lidl was the most extreme but saw a guy in a ww2 era gas mask last week. Does it annoy me? A bit because I am toeing the line but I think we should abandon masks

Floatyboat · 28/08/2020 22:04

Some people are just selfish wankers op it's hard to change that. At least it's easy to identify that type of person now - they'll always be the one not wearing a mask.

During lockdown my DD was working in one of the small local supermarkets in our village. Masks weren't mandatory then and not so widely available. A few people did improvise though, sometimes with comical results.

A man came into their shop wearing a snorkel mask. He resembled the Man from Atlantis in it, for those old enough to remember that (dating myself a bit there). He proceeded the staff had around the shop wearing the snorkel mask and the staff had to keep a straight face until he had left.

Missing the point of the thread I know

But poor old Dolly Parton having this nonsense posted in her name*

Grin I thought the same

I know, but people had to carry theirs with them and be involved in drills etc - my point was around compliance
userxx · 28/08/2020 22:45

No I haven't because I'm not a massive twat.

1940s · 28/08/2020 22:49

Don't be a dick. And passive aggressive huffing is the worst

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/08/2020 22:54

Compliance was actually pretty poor, after an initial good period. People don't change!
