Examples of completely illogical ‘roolz’ everywhere - they give me ‘rule fatigue.’ I may even have reached ‘Peak Roolz.’

For example. On holiday last week I entered a shop that apparently had a one way system. It was a small shop, and because everyone was directed left on arrival, they had crowded into a narrow area in the left, thus ensuring no social distancing.

I didn’t know about the one way system, so I noticed the crowd on the left and headed to the right of the shop to browse and stay away from people. The shop assistant shouted that I wasn’t following the one way system And I needed to join the crowd in the left (I left after that).

Second example. In same small seaside town, We were there for two weeks. On our last night we went to a chippy on the seafront that we’d used three times already. They only accepted cards. They made you queue outside, allowing one customer in at a time. Fair enough.

However On this occasion they were now ‘cash only.’ I had no cash, so I asked to place my order and go to the cash point or find DH who I knew to have cash.

They refused this. When I returned with the cash, the shop was empty so I went in. But silly me, I was still breaking ‘the roolz’ Because they had another (less obvious rule) that you couldn’t go in if they were busy doing something. So she was busy battering fish, and this meant I wasn’t allowed in. Because any fule know that’s a dangerous situation.

Ice cream shop where you had to wait outside and stand behind a line when they let you in. Couldn’t see the ice cream flavours from behind the line. Was allowed to ‘step forward two paces.’ Second time I visited, whole family in the shop, primary aged children literally licking the glass counter. No objections raised

I’m totally over the roolz. Anyone else?

Playgrounds still not open near me but in two weeks time kids will be packed into school buses and into classrooms.

Breadandroses1 · 27/08/2020 19:38

Our local swimming pool has got themselves in a right muddle. It has staggered entry slots, one person or family group every 10 minutes. You're supposed to be in and out in an hour.

It has 2 sets of changing rooms. One set is cavernous. Tons of space. That's where you go to change when you come in. Because of the 10 minute interval you're the only one in there.

When you come out, however, you're directed to the tiny poolside changing rooms, with a notice on the door for one group at a time. But you can't see who's in there until you're in, and of course getting kids changed after swimming- especially with one adult as per current roolz- takes forever. You could be outside for 20 minutes waiting which would take you well over an hour. So there are frequently about 12 people in a tiny room all falling over each other and breathing on each other. And commenting on what a stupid arrangement it is.

Just open your ginormous changing room fgs! Loads of room to socially distance in there.

@Thanksitsgotpockets

Tkmaxx have rule enforcers in hi viz jackets standing around in menacing groups to check that you're following rools and discuss with each other what to do if you infringe them. Signs everywhere to not touch anything in a place that's more like a jumble sale and needs you to get stuck in there if you're to find anything worthwhile.

Empty outdoor shopping places with people to make sure you walk on the correct side so that you don't bump into invisible people.

Yes, this!

Was in TK yesterday and the over zealous door bouncer in the high vis vest stopped us before we went in and quizzed my son and me if we'd used the store since the end of lockdown. We said "yes" as we've been a few times and thankfully he believed us, no ID required Hmm. He eventually let us pass.

I might suggest a Gandalf staff next time.

middleager · 27/08/2020 20:15

@WouldBeGood

DP had to do online training on how to enter his (totally deserted) office to collect a new chair.
Ah this would be a dream for Gareth in The Office (recalling the excellent H&S training on how to pick up a box and where to put a coffee cup).

I hope someone parodies these roolz. Catherine Tate did a bit in the sketch for that weird 'live' BBC show at the start of Covid, but this deserves a full on slot, worthy of Catherine or the late, great Caroline Aherne.

NeurotrashWarrior · 27/08/2020 20:17

The very fact that you still have to book to go to national trust properties on line, when hardly anyone is going is ridiculous. In many nt properties you can walk for miles before you see anyone, even pre lockdown. Plus many of their elderly customers are disadvantaged as they arent used to on line booking.

We managed our first trip last week to a property which is mainly all outside (a small chapel and a cafe are the only indoor areas.)

I think they've increased numbers but the car park was almost as full as normal. It felt pretty much as busy as normal. So I wasn't sure what was going on there.

They've shut most of the loos too. So more people using one set of loos Confused

lookatallthosechickens · 27/08/2020 20:19

Why does everyone keep typing “roolz” - I feel like I’m missing a joke?

CountessFrog · 27/08/2020 20:32

Because the OP (me) is using this mis-spelling on purpose to denote pointless ones

@NeurotrashWarrior the NT is sticking out to me as one of the most OTT organisations. I've tried to stay away since I saw the number of signs up everywhere, can't be arsed booking for everything anyway.

CountessFrog · 27/08/2020 21:41

Is anyone else (like me) just staying at home because they’ve tried going out and it’s too tiresome?

I’ve gone to online for everything. I originally thought that staying in would be bad for my mental health, but I find going out is worse!

Retail stores only have themselves to blame when they go out of business!

secretllama · 27/08/2020 22:10

Not sure if anyones mentioned this but my personal favourite was the rule for weddings where the bride and groom must wash hands before and after exchanging rings ... yeah because they definitely won't be having sex later on their wedding night 🤣

Werk · 27/08/2020 22:15

@CountessFrog yes, me. I stay in as much as I can. I am not overly worried about catching the damn virus but I am anxious about inadvertently breaking the "roolz".

I forgot my face mask in Smyths toy shop earlier, I had it in my hand to put on but the bouncer person outside the door barked at me and my DC that we had to sanitise our hands, so I put it in my pocket and did what I was told and then forgot to put it on. They made an announcement over the tannoy, the shame!! I am not anti mask at all, I am happy to wear it, but I get so flustered with all the signs and arrows etc.

Bargebill19 · 27/08/2020 22:16

I can’t be arsed to go out and shop. So I get everything online. If I can’t find it we do without. Stress free, rule free, parking free shopping!!!
(May need a bigger recycling bin)🤣

NationalBust · 27/08/2020 22:24

Nc'd because I've told most of my friends and family this. I sent a (if I may say so) superb email to my local NT after a particularly infuriating visit. Apparently they had found a way to open the cafe and shop, but not the wooden (mostly lumps of old tree) outdoor children's play area because "we haven't had guidance on how to sanitise it" Hmm. I asked if they were also disinfecting the wooden picnic tables, and they assured me they were Confused

It reopened a week after I also commented on their social media but they never did reply to my email. My mother volunteers for them and the emails they have been sent are MENTAL. Pages and pages long, updating them on new roolz. So I do have sympathy in some part. But not for the patronising staff who thought they could clean a wooden picnic table.

Taswama · 27/08/2020 22:27

Agree NT looks OTT (and I'm a member). I don't understand why the cut off time for online bookings is 3pm the previous day. Surely a computer system doesn't care?

Bargebill19 · 27/08/2020 22:28

I’ve cleaned a set of gents toilets - they have a line they have to stand behind to use the urinals....... 2 meters away from the urinals.
If that wasn’t funny enough, it’s ok for me to clean them, but not for men to stand close to them.......and they say women are the weaker sex ?!

AgentCooper · 27/08/2020 23:25

I am getting so fed up hearing about all the outdoor children’s play areas that aren’t open. Why?? What’s the thought process?! I’m in Glasgow and our playgrounds have been open since the end of June, thank God. Young children and their parents just don’t exist in all this. I would have been allowed to take my toddler into a manky pub before I could take him to the playground in the park.

Museums around us are opening up again but with all the toddler-friendly bits shut.

lookatallthosechickens · 28/08/2020 00:01

@Taswama I imagine it’s because some of the sites will need to do ‘offline’ things with the information like maybe decide how many car parks to open, how many zero-hour staff to call in, or even print out paper lists of ticket holders for staff to check against on their clipboards. There might be one property that asked bookings to close at 3pm and then all the rest have to deal with it because it’s a shared system. Software + humans=nonsense (I say that as a software engineer)

Titsywoo · 28/08/2020 00:03

I don't understand the screens in supermarkets at the tills. They protect the cashier when you are paying but when you are loading and packing there is nothing between you and them and when you are at the till that's what you are doing 90% of the time Confused

NeurotrashWarrior · 28/08/2020 07:03

Yes the NT site has closed the playgrounds too, though left a rope course thing open. The playground did always get exceptionally busy mind you. There is guidance on cleaning outdoor equipment. It's quite a lot though.

I think a lot of it is staffing. I think they've been really financially screwed over by this.

Eng heritage get some government funding. NT made a concerted effort to generate more cash a good few years ago which mainly relies on coffee shops, shops, playgrounds and putting on kids activities all summer, bringing the crowds and family memberships in.

Still don't get the toilet thing, unless they're just cleaning one loo set repeatedly with one staff member.

Derbygerbil · 28/08/2020 07:12

Not sure if anyones mentioned this but my personal favourite was the rule for weddings where the bride and groom must wash hands before and after exchanging rings ... yeah because they definitely won't be having sex later on their wedding night 🤣

But that’s ok as they’ll be wearing masks when they do. Hmm

Seriously though, some of the people dreaming up these rules have zero common sense.

MsTSwift · 28/08/2020 07:45

We stayed an overnight at one hotel who had done away with all sun loungers due to Covid so guests had to lie on the stone floor utterly ridiculous

KitKatastrophe · 28/08/2020 08:09

Surely if the bride and groom are living together (which most are these days) they wouldnt need to wash hands or wear a mask to go near each other? They would just need to be 2m from the registrars/ officiant

KitKatastrophe · 28/08/2020 08:10

@MsTSwift

Grin Did people actually lie on the floor??
MsTSwift · 28/08/2020 08:12

Yep! When it’s sunny and you have access to a pool you do what you have to do !
