If you wear your mask under your nose...

WHY??

Don't you realise the same air comes out, and you might as well not bother.
Just been shopping and the amount of masks under noses is unbelievable. I just don't get it!? If I see someone with no mask at all I assume they can't wear one for some reason. But under the nose?? I'm desperate to just ask someone but don't want to risk getting punched in the face 😬

Can anyone shed some light on this? Do they not know that it's the same air coming out as their mouth air?

I've written this on another madk thread. I do see people wearing them under noses alot but the most shocking one was a lady in ikea take hers off do a massive sneeze all over the produce counter (was the food section) then replace mask. The snot literally showerd the area. My friend mentioned it to an assistant who immediately disinfected the area. I was shocked!! Whats the point?!

Mouth breathers.

Not to be trusted.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 22/08/2020 13:55

I work in retail and see this daily. Yesterday a woman pulled down her mask to sneeze, twice, all over the baby clothes.

HeresMe · 22/08/2020 14:08

Ah can see we have the underwear one already, total bollocks but keep posting it.

Maybe three people wear glasses and they steam up who knows but mind your own business

Eaumyword · 22/08/2020 14:10

I don't understand the nose peepers either.
I had a dental check up last week, brilliant safety protocols in place until I got my checkup, which was done by my dentist in a paper mask only over her mouth, not nose. No visor.
I need to be more brave and ask people who are inches from my face and talking, to wear their mask properly, but I'm not confident enough Sad

BallOfString · 22/08/2020 14:16

It is because they are thick

I disagree. I've known lots of people who aren't very bright, but have a sense of responsibility and respect towards other people's wellbeing, and you don't have to look too hard to find clever people who couldn't give a shit about others.

I think it's more about values and beliefs and the breakdown of social consensus. I've no idea how you change those except in the way you treat people, raise your own children, etc - but that's only going to have a very limited influence. How do you convince people that we have obligations regarding other people's wellbeing if it's a value they just don't share? We're far more tolerant of difference now, but that also means there is less social pressure to conform and people don't worry about shame or disapproval from not doing what society expects of you. Which is great in lots of ways, but it does cause problems when there's a national emergency and we suddenly want people to conform to rules they might not like.

Firefliess · 22/08/2020 14:19

Maybe they have the shape of face where the mask won't stay in place if it's over the nose? I used to find my mask would keep riding up my nose until it cut across my eyes and I couldn't see. (I have deep set eyes and a largeish pointy nose!) Until I leaned to tie knots in the ear straps. Now it's a much better fit.

A mask over the mouth will still protect others from a cough so it's not completely useless.

smellyhouseelf · 22/08/2020 14:23

I think it is my business if they're breathing near me.

Some of these stories are so ridiculous, pulling masks down to cough and sneeze. Just unbelievable. It would be funny if it wasn't so dangerous.

Maybe people really don't give a shit any more. I just really hope we don't end up in a second lockdown because of these selfish people.

Similarly I noticed a few times people coming up right next to me reaching for items on the shelf. Even with masks I think we should still be giving people space. I'm not sure if this second wave we keep hearing about is going to come but when I see behaviour like this I feel like it's more likely.

Those who pull them down when there's no one around then back up when someone else is there, that is different I think, and obviously masks will slip occasionally. I was in the pharmacy last week and one of the ear elastics just pinged off and I had to quickly get my mask back on my face. I felt awful , but these things happen. I'm more talking about the people who wear them like that all the time .

They do but they bank on British politeness to not get called out on it.

PJ6M · 22/08/2020 14:30

I think it is my business if they're breathing near me.

Absurd 😂😂😂

You think you're entitled to poke your nose into someone else business because share oxygen

Hahah

That is one of the most entitled and self important pieces of horse shit I've even see written on this site.

Breathing my air.. ,😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

CanICelebrate · 22/08/2020 14:34

I’ve seen loads of people with their mask under their nose. I assume they are either not very intelligent or incredibly arrogant!

smellyhouseelf · 22/08/2020 14:45

Hang on, I didn't say my air 😂, I said breathing near me. The more people who wear masks, the safer we all are. I'm just interested/curious/nosy about their reasons for not wearing them properly. They protect neither themselves, nor me, nor anyone else in the vicinity. So what's the point?

And entitled? Yes I am entitled to wonder about their reasons. Aren't we all entitled to think and ask questions online about things that affect us? I'm not suggesting for a second that I have any right to know each individual persons reasons.

OP posts:
BallOfString · 22/08/2020 14:57

OP's belief: We all breath the same air, COVID is partly spread by coughs and sneezes, therefore we should all take responsibility for trying to protect each other by wearing face masks properly.

PJ6M's interpretation of this belief: "You think you're entitled to poke your nose into someone else business because you share oxygen. Hahah. That is one of the most entitled and self important pieces of horse shit I've even see written on this site."

Hard to see your logic PJ6M. You seem to be saying that your individual right to do as you wish is more important that our collective responsibility to care for one another, and yet you also want to accuse the collective responsibility side of being entitled and self-important? Or do you just not believe that we do all share the same air?

butterpuffed · 22/08/2020 14:58

When I was sitting on a bench waiting for my cousin in our shopping precinct I noticed people coming out of shops pulling the mask under their nose, then putting it back up when they went into the nearby shops.

Presumably they're only wearing them because they know they're meant to in shops and aren't thinking about healthy and safety reasons.

How shortsighted of them Confused

HeresMe · 22/08/2020 14:58

I think it is my business if they're breathing near me

You are breathing the same air if you are in a building with them you do realise that.

smellyhouseelf · 22/08/2020 15:01

Of course I know that. And even if we all wear masks, we still breathe the same air. I'm not thick.

OP posts:
HeresMe · 22/08/2020 15:19

From your post you are paranoid about it , and if you believe the protect others but not me, a mask if it isn't letting it out it won't be letting it in.

Shitfuckoh · 22/08/2020 15:19

You absolutely misread what the OP meant but I fully admit to laughing at that last sentence Grin
SilkCashmere · 22/08/2020 15:21

They do but they bank on British politeness to not get called out on it.

It's not being polite, it's not being arrested for a hate crime stopping me saying anything to some or getting a punch in the face from the others because they have a whiff of being the sort to definitely have a shouting match and road rage stalk you.

smellyhouseelf · 22/08/2020 15:26

I'm not paranoid at all. I don't consider myself particularly at risk, but I'll do whatever I can to protect myself, my family, and others I come into contact with.

I'm just interested in why they do it as it seems so ridiculous to me.

presumably, if virus particles had landed on your mask due to someone else's sneeze etc, holding it there under your nose gives a virus much more chance to enter your upper resp tract than not wearing one at all as, rather than fall to the ground, the particles have a nice base on your mask just below your nose to be breathed in from?

Natural selection. They are more likely to be asymptomatic and pass it on.

I understand there is a theory that these super spreader types, have now built up immunity from having caught the virus, its made many of these asymptomatic men infertile by attacking the testes and the vulnerable have learned to avoid them.

nc600 · 22/08/2020 15:41

"Can go through eyes anyway!!"

What you gonna do @OverTheRainbow88 cry all over them? 😂

LightUpLetters · 22/08/2020 15:41

They don’t want to wear them as they are hot and sweaty but they have to wear one so they are wearing it round their mouth to show they are abiding by the law but putting it under their nose to stop them being hot and sweaty.

This is why my mum wears it under her nose
