New study shows the huge role children play in spreading Covid

Biggest study so far on the role of children in spreading Covid has come out today. Surely this has massive implications on children going back to school as normal. It’s very concerning. news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2020/08/looking-at-children-as-the-silent-spreaders-of-sars-cov-2/

This doesn't work with secondary school. They are virtually adult.

Shitfuckoh · 20/08/2020 09:56

@Iamnotthe1 1 of our schools is doing year group bubbles - primary school.
The other one, Specialist school, is forming one big bubble, Age 2 - 11 years old. Class sizes anywhere from 8 up to 16 I think. They figure most of the children can't SD so they aren't even going to attempt the class / year group bubble. Confused I think it's also due to that whilst they try to keep staff consistent, they do appear to have changes in the staff quite often - TA's mixing within classes etc.

“Parents of healthy NT kids simply do not understand.“

Sad but generally true. 💐

Summersnearlyover · 20/08/2020 09:58

@ElizabethMainwaring of course. But the clinically vulnerable and disabled children don’t have a voice, parents have to shout for them. It really concerns me how many people see adult or child shielders as expendable.

onlinelinda · 20/08/2020 09:58

"Did you really not know this"

"Anyone with any sense would"

Meow, meow, do you really not know how to conduct yourself with civility?

Barbie222 · 20/08/2020 09:58

If they're carrying the virus but not shedding, they won't be transmitting.

Presumably to shed you just need to cough, sneeze or speak, though? Which young children do most messily? Or does the virus hide away in asymptomatic people in a place where it can't do that? Genuine question.

Bupkis · 20/08/2020 10:01

@ElizabethMainwaring
I wonder what will happen when the shielders are told that they need to shield again?
Most children have been removed from the shielding list so will be told to carry on as normal.

Iamnotthe1 · 20/08/2020 10:03

@Barbie222

The current prevailing belief is that asymptomatic people and presymptomatic people are responsible for over half of the transmissions through silent spreading.

Summersnearlyover · 20/08/2020 10:03

@LouiseNW also many on MN were under the impression that all children with an EHCP were going to school as normal during term time, this is not true, my sons school shut it’s doors to all because there were to many clinically vulnerable children and staff. Many parents have been struggling with caring for their disabled children 24/7 for the last 6 months, none of the usual services have been available and no respite yet we don’t moan and whinge, we get on with it.

ElizabethMainwaring · 20/08/2020 10:03

Bupkis, I was mainly referring to staff.

Yes, I quite agree.

Absolutely, it's really worrying. My child has a reasonably high risk of having to go to hospital with any illness. This hasn't changed because a letter has been sent. The only thing that has changed is that there is now no government support for me wanting to keep my child safe.

Mindy98 · 20/08/2020 10:35

I'm not fully on board with the "oh but many kids are asymptomatic and symptomatic ones won't be in school" excuse.

The same is true of adults. And we have measures in place absolutely everywhere adults go to stop transmission.

Mindy98 · 20/08/2020 10:36

"It really concerns me how many people see adult or child shielders as expendable."

me too.

ExmoorPony · 20/08/2020 10:41

I'm fed up of people staying covid has long term effects without any evidence. Long term means LONG TERM not just a few weeks. I took 2 months to get over a bad chest from a cold ffs. Do you people want our economy to die so everyone can starve to death or commit suicide?!?

Fucking insanity.

Cantaloupeisland · 20/08/2020 10:53

Why do we need to keep explaining that we don't want schools to be closed, we want them to open in a way that means they will stay open. The government is currently telling us that 35 16 year olds (who physiologically are adults) packed close together all day in a room with no windows, no masks or screens and no distancing is ok. This is totally at odds with the guidance for every other venue. We will end up closed by half term. I can't understand why the government won't let us be more flexible with numbers on site.

ancientgran · 20/08/2020 10:54

I feel for people with children who have been shielding, it must be very scary and some people seem incapable of empathy.

ancientgran · 20/08/2020 10:56

I can't understand why the government won't let us be more flexible with numbers on site. Because they can't believe they could possibly be wrong despite the evidence. They will keep saying it is all OK until it so clearly isn't they have to do a u turn and then they will look for someone to blame because it is never them.

ancientgran · 20/08/2020 10:59

@Summersnearlyover But the clinically vulnerable and disabled children don’t have a voice, parents have to shout for them. It really concerns me how many people see adult or child shielders as expendable. None of my children or GC are vulnerable or disabled but please believe that many of us without vulnerable children understand your concerns and if there is anything we can do then please tell us.

I'm happy to sign petitions, write to MPs/newspapers or whatever. Is there anything you would like us to do?

doubleshotespresso · 20/08/2020 11:07

@MaxNormal

Well that else does OP want? Schools to stay shut because she's scared?
Maybe keep them shit until they can be made safe?

HipTightOnions · 20/08/2020 11:13

My point is, the discussion has been done to death. This thread isn't adding anything that hasn't already been said over and over and over again.

It is keeping a critical public health issue visible, and not pretending it has somehow evaporated.

🤣🤣🤣🤣 Forgive me I was on a call whilst posting and simultaneously assembling something for D.C.

SHUT obviously 😂

Agree. And teachers.

Cantaloupeisland · 20/08/2020 11:14

All we will have in secondary is year group bubbles. That's it. So James in year 10 picks up the virus somewhere. He goes into school where he can potentially have close contact with 200 other year 10s, up to 7 teachers plus 9 TAs during the day. James has 2 siblings in year 7 and 9 who he will have close contact with at home. If they pick up the virus from him they will take it to their respective bubbles. James hangs out with his mates on the way home, most of whom are in year 11.
We really do need some better measures. The 2 weeks before we had to close in March were chaos and I don't want that again.
