...Coronavirus cases across England appear to be levelling off, despite flare-ups in local hotspots, according to estimates from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

An estimated 1 in 1,900, or 28,300 people in England currently have the virus.

This is from BBC News. Chances of you meeting someone with covid is slim. Some people just seem to think it is everywhere. The constant covid news deluge needs to stop, so people can move on and not fret about something they are unlikely to get.

OP posts:
yawnsvillex · 14/08/2020 14:10

100% agree.

But sadly the blind obedience and lack of critical thinking with the general public will cause more damage than the virus.

I'm with you OP @UserNeedsGin

ohthegoats · 14/08/2020 14:12

If we're still in this position at Christmas, then that will be the time to breathe out a bit.

Nellodee · 14/08/2020 14:13

Cases in the UK, ONS data.

The reality is.
SatanicDesk · 14/08/2020 14:14

YANBU to highlight this, the frothing and fear needs to reflect the level of risk proportional to individual vulnerability and not applied across/to society as a group.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 14/08/2020 14:14

I agree. I don't think things are as dire as some people make out. School reopening will be the big test.

Layladylay234 · 14/08/2020 14:20

Yep totally agree. Well done OP for highlighting this x

duffeldaisy · 14/08/2020 14:35

I'll feel a bit more informed if/when they release yesterday's case numbers first. (It's been in the 1000s per day for a couple of days, and yesterday also would have included the new figures from the outbreak in Northampton).

I want to be reassured, but I don't trust the figures yet, especially as everything's starting to up again.

Ellsbells12 · 14/08/2020 14:39

Thank you for this x

Reading that Spain has found covid in sewage dated back to March 2019 I believe we have had this rumbling around here for a while. I suspect we saw the second wave in spring 2020.

I personally know several people who have had a mysterious coronavirus in Dec 2019. Tested for all known coronavirus’ at the time.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist at all, and I do agree lockdown was necessary, but I think this has been living among us for a lot longer than we’ve been told.

TableFlowerss · 14/08/2020 14:47

Not this post but just in general. I’m sick to the back teeth of people moaning it’s too soon for schools to open.

I don’t know what people actually want. If they’re that concerned why can’t they just keep their own DC at home and tell their employers that are too worried to go back. They can keep them selves shielded and ‘safe’ in their own bubble for the next 3 years if they want and only make necessary outings.

TableFlowerss · 14/08/2020 14:48

Why do they insist everybody else has to keep their children off too?! Brainwashed springs to mind...

I had every single symptom of COVID in december, never had a temperature as high as that in my life I don't think, not even with flu.
Jrobhatch29 · 14/08/2020 14:55

I think alot of people haven't moved on from march and think the threat level is the same. I also don't think people realise how bad it was in early march when we were all roaming about doing what we wanted as well. The reality from antibody testing is that 1 in 10 to 20 had it around march and april time... And more like 1 in 5/6 in London. Compared to 1 in 1900 now the situation has improved massively

Chaosalways · 14/08/2020 15:04

I totally agree but also agree that if we're still like this come December that's the time to breathe a sigh of relief.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 14/08/2020 15:04

@TheMumblesofMumbledom

My manager was very very ill. ITU for weeks, off work for 6months. Tested for all known coronavirus’ in Dec.

Had all symptoms of covid-19 in hindsight. Still not 100% now. I can’t believe it wasn’t here last year.

Chaosalways · 14/08/2020 15:09

Also my grandmother died after contracting a 'Covid like' virus in December too and developing pneumonia. But of course lots of other viruses would have been circulating.

It's not beyond belief to think it might have been here earlier.

TheMumblesofMumbledom · 14/08/2020 15:10

Careful Dobby those of us on here that are reasonably sure we had it last December have been shot down in flames many a time this year and called nutters and theorists.

GoldenOmber · 14/08/2020 15:12

I also don't think people realise how bad it was in early march when we were all roaming about doing what we wanted as well.

Yes! It must have been absolutely bloody everywhere by that point.

Really glad cases are so low now. I remember a lot of worry on here back in early lockdown that we weren’t having a “proper lockdown” so it wouldn’t be enough to get cases down. Very glad it was.

Chaosalways · 14/08/2020 15:13

'Proper lockdown' doesn't seem to have helped Spain anyway does it? It's increasing there despite them having had a very strict lockdown.

Chloemol · 14/08/2020 15:15

@TheMumblesofMumbledom

Why? China has admitted it was there end November, beginning December so it’s obvious it must be around in Europe December time as there was still worldwide travel

Why wouldn’t people understand that?

vinoandbrie · 14/08/2020 15:19

Totally agree OP.

Morfin · 14/08/2020 15:20

But the rates are low because of SD, extra cleaning masks etc I'm currently sat watching workers at a theme park and they are regularly washing their hands with a new sink that's been installed, the overwhelming majority of people are using anti bac at the station before they get on the ride. That's why levels are stabilizing.

TheMumblesofMumbledom · 14/08/2020 15:20

Exactly Chloemol and I live and work somewhere that I was in contact with a lot of travellers from Europe and China.

My dd and dh also came down with it, whatever we had was very contagious and covid like!

So I've said all along, I think April was the second wave and it's petering out and not as aggressive now.

yawnsvillex · 14/08/2020 15:21

@Chaosalways exactly! Finally .. someone who sees common sense

TheMumblesofMumbledom · 14/08/2020 15:22

The theme parks have recently re-opened haven't they? We've been back at work for ages now and trust me, the hand washing and sanitising is definitely less than it was when we first went back.
