To think the government should enforce mask wearing by directing shops not to allow people in without them?

I’m not talking about the very few people with genuine ‘exemptions’ . I’m talking whole families and couples who can’t all have medical/psychological issues so can’t wear them.

Several times over the last few weeks, I’ve seen young couples (only younger people funnily enough) and family groups not wearing masks in my local supermarket and town shops.

I asked my supermarket why they are letting them in and they said they can’t enforce it.

Why should I and the majority of people go through the discomfort of having to put one on when ignorant twats like that just decide they’re not going to. We’re protecting them but they don’t give a shit about protecting usAngry?

I think we should all start heckling them to get out and get a mask on like I’ve seen happen in the US.

AIBU in that they deserve to be shamed into wearing a mask if they government aren’t going to be stricter about it?

We all want to get back to normal. It’s imbeciles like this who are going to prolong it for the rest of us.

@hellywelly3

I work in a shop the amount of abuse we get on a normal day is shocking never mind having to enforce this. We couldn’t physically stop someone entering without putting ourselves in danger
Exactly this. I don't even get PAID for working in a shop, I do it free of charge because it's a charity shop. I am not there to act as a police officer.

If someone doesn't have a face covering on, I'll assume that they probably have a genuine reason for that. It's not my place to quiz them, and none of my business. They will be welcomed and served as any other customer would be.

People who get all judgy and start talking about enforcement - when surveys consistently show that levels of compliance are very high - are cunts.

And I don't use that word often.

@MyNameIsNotMummy

I take it those who are personally attacking me are mask refusers who are selfish and pig ignorant enough to put others at risk, and prolong the agony for everyone, because they don’t want to make the effort or endure the discomfort (that we all feel) of wearing one.

Ho hum.

Guess again, Einstein.

@Eastie77

I'm so confused about how this is being applied across the U.K. We are on holiday in Wales and before arriving I read that rules around masks etc were being strictly enforced here. On our first afternoon here we went to a large Tesco and virtually no-one amongst customers or staff was wearing a mask of any description. I actually felt quite self conscious as it seemed as if people were staring at us for wearing one. I know the specific area we are staying in hasn't recorded a single case in about a month but I thought as tourism picks up they would be very strict about this kind of thing. Coming from an area of London where people cannot board a bus without a mask, never mind go into a supermarket, I'm finding this all a bit odd!
You must live in a different London to me.

I see people using public transport and going into shops without masks. Went in a supermarket the other day, a couple of staff weren't wearing them. Not even all tfl are wearing them,

Boogiewoogiebugleboy · 11/08/2020 14:49

So where’s your expert inside information OP on the very few who are truly medically exempt?!! Suggest you keep your mask on permanently so we’ll just hear a muffled noise when you try to spout shit at the supermarket and tie a couple Of masks round your hands to stop you typing such utter bollocks.

Underhisi · 11/08/2020 15:14

"because they don’t want to make the effort or endure the discomfort (that we all feel) of wearing one."

I've been wearing one since March and have never felt like I am making an effort or enduring a discomfort. I think you are overplaying the "effort" you are putting in. Some people will experience real distress if someone tried to force a mask on them but you can't see that because it is beyond you.

newmumma43 · 11/08/2020 15:37

@Boogiewoogiebugleboy 😂😂😂👏👏👏

newmumma43 · 11/08/2020 15:39

@SockYarn perfect way of thinking! 👏

Waxonwaxoff0 · 11/08/2020 16:02

YABVU. Shop staff do not get paid enough to deal with abuse from shitty customers.

And no, it's not a job for the armed forces. We do not live under a dictatorship. Fuck that.

HeIenaDove · 11/08/2020 16:05

No @MyNameIsNotMummy Im not a mask refuser

In fact i wrote this because i got fed up of being gaslighted by people like you

Masks are a real drag
But its all about the price tag
Now you need to do your duty.
And shop for clothes and beauty.
Dont forget about shoes.
And stuff you possibly wont use.
And you can go to the pub
Eat lots of lovely grub.
With not a mask in sight.
You can party all night.
Drinkers getting a free pass
So they can drink and fall on their arse.
Had enough of this crap
Sick of being in this trap
Up to me if i dont shop
It doesnt mean you can have a pop.
Now i play the waiting game.
But you wont make me feel shame.
I DO wear a mask
But being happy "bout it. Too big an ask.

Nope, you're wrong on that. Getting things wrong seems to be your specialist subject and I have to admit, you're bloody awesome at it.
Waxonwaxoff0 · 11/08/2020 16:12

I'm not a mask refuser either, I just don't want to live in a country where the government has totalitarian control.

QueenCT · 11/08/2020 16:18

With the couples - my dad will be wearing a mask, my mum can't. She has dementia so no he can't leave her in the car or shop alone and he's not found a mask that she can tolerate

minnieok · 11/08/2020 16:29

@Midsommar

Was the same every time I took trains in the Midlands (no problem in the SW interestingly)

OhReallyThen · 11/08/2020 16:59

selfish and pig ignorant enough to put others at risk

Nope, you're the selfish one who can't be compassionate to people with genuine medical issues or trauma that mean they can't wear a mask.

You're the pig ignorant one who clearly lives in your own little bubble. Ignorant to other people's MH struggles. Ignorant to other people invisible medical conditions and disabilities that mean they can't wear a mask.

You want to heckle and bully disabled people out of shops? Shame on you.

Not just that, but also use soldiers trained to kill people to forbid their entry to shops.

canigooutyet · 11/08/2020 21:16

Omg I think myname might be my mum haha. Although I use the word mum very loosely.

Back in the beginning the mad cow wanted the army to come in and keep people like me locked away. If people like me didn't cooperate we should all be gathered up and secluded from everyone else. Asked for my name to be on top of the waiting list it sounded amazing. Something must have happened to her phone as the call got disconnected 🤣

We'd be shipped off to somewhere that of course took into consideration the importance of sunshine and physical health, so we'd all have outdoor space and own access to gyms etc. Going out and shopping a thing of the past, forget book your slot next week, we are talking deliveries as quick as if you'd been able to go their yourself. Round the clock care as needed in our little bedsit. And of course cos I'm such a lazy cow, of course take-aways but more like home-made. And of course we could still have pubs and nightclubs as they would be outside. And even if we wanted to take the risk, at least the rest of society wouldn't be at risk.

Might actually go and unblock the last lost of contacts she used to get in touch. See what batshit ideas she has had since.

I have just come home from Tenerife ( went before the self isolation came in) over there it’s the law to wear face coverings in all shops, bars, restaurants you have to have a mask on you at all times the police have the power to stop and search you and issues fines if you do not have a mask with you. No mask no entrance to shop etc. Sadly From what we witnessed it was just the British holiday makers giving us all a bad name by not complying to wearing masks, refusing to social distance, having mask on around chin but not covering nose or mouth. Lots of the locals were wearing masks walking around the town.

Yellowbutterfly1 · 12/08/2020 03:35

I think we can clearly see who the school bullies like the OP are.
Get on with your own life and let others try and get on with theirs.
People like you are the reason I’m now too afraid to take my disabled daughter to a shop.

mathanxiety · 12/08/2020 04:56

Let's see your stats then, @fedupwiththeidots.

onedayinthefuture · 12/08/2020 04:56

Has anyone seen the video footage of a women being choked by a police officer for not wearing a mask? www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.abc.net.au/article/12548866

That male police officer should be struck off. I don't believe mask wearing should be enforced any further. Yes the virus is real but the consequences of those in authority who get off on using their power is extremely worrying.

VashtaNerada · 12/08/2020 05:35

I don’t blame shop staff for being fearful considering the footage coming from America of people being abusive when asked to wear a mask. I’d like to see more high-profile fixed penalty notices from the police just to remind people that it’s not acceptable to just choose not to wear one. I’d also like a clearer system for medical exemptions. I have seen police refuse to allow people to board a tube without masks (no medical exemptions, just couldn’t be bothered) and that was satisfying! As a PP has said people in other European countries seem to be managing this much better than us.

DanaScully53 · 12/08/2020 06:59

I followed a bloke into the shop the other day who said to the assistant on the door "asthma mate, no need to wear a mask" and walked in. Saw him later with a fag on. Sorry, but if yo have asthma and can breathe well enough to smoke you can wear a mask.

QueenofmyPrinces · 12/08/2020 07:26

I was reading an article last night about a woman who had emailed ASDA to make a complaint about the number of people she saw in their store who weren’t wearing a mask.

Apparently she had approached those people to question them about why they weren’t wearing markings, and then she spoke to a member of staff about it in order to say that non-mask wearers should be told to leave the store. Because she wasn’t happy with the response she got she then emailed the Head Quarters.

She was told that ASDA encourage people as much as possible to wear masks in that they offer masks to people at the entrance doors, they have stickers and posters up on the entrance doors around the store and they have a tannoy system that encourages mask wearing for those who aren’t medically exempt.

The woman had then responded that “encouraging masks” isn’t good enough and reiterated that all people without a mask should be forced to leave.
