Does anyone else not really go anywhere that needs masks??

I was just reading a different thread and someone said they had taken their mask on/off 15 times a day and it made me realise maybe I'm in the minority?!

I can't remember the last time I put on one away from work (full time NHS so always on there). I don't go to shops, only shop online. I don't go to bars / restaurants / indoor entertainment / indoor services etc. Do pay at pump. Never use public transport etc

We live in the south west in a coastal area near the moors and spend all our time avoiding the hoards as DS is autistic and needs quiet. We go to the beach, forest, moors, sea swimming, national trust and that's about it....otherwise we're at home. I wouldn't go anywhere that needed masks with ds as he can't cope with a mask and I know there's judgement when not wearing one.

Anyone else?

Just the post office and the food shop, otherwise not. I have one in my handbag but it is a relatively rare trip out when I put it on.

FinallyRelief · 07/08/2020 16:23

Argos - Sainsburys - and in a restaurant the other day when I had to walk past a queue of people.

But generally don't need a mask.

I noticed in Argos a chap carrying his mask? No idea why he didn't wear it

Yetiyoga · 07/08/2020 16:24

You don't need one in a pub or restaurant anyway.

Don't you? I though you might have to put one on to walk through or go to the loo? I wouldn't know!

I've worn one for a few minutes only, in the Post Office, collecting a prescription and queuing to buy a takeaway coffee (although not strictly needed there). That's it.

Floralnomad · 07/08/2020 16:29

I go in the chemist once a month and very occasionally a farm shop . I think since they became compulsory ive had one on twice .

lifeafter50 · 07/08/2020 16:30

Mostly just pop into the petrol station for small food items etc where they don't require it. Only times I've worn one is the supermarket twice since it became compulsory and then only for the briefest time possible.
Would not go to any other shops now as do everything else online.

Ickabog · 07/08/2020 16:30

Same here. I wear it once a week / 10 days to go shopping, but other than that I don't go anywhere that requires them.

milveycrohn · 07/08/2020 16:33

Walking about in the high street I don't wear a mask. My DH does the shopping, and I wait outside.
I have been into a cafe (mask not necessary).
I dont want to go shopping while it is mandatory, but may have to at some time.

RiaRoth · 07/08/2020 16:33

I am a teacher so apparently I don't need a mask Confused

Lockdownseperation · 07/08/2020 16:34

@Yetiyoga

Only if you were ordering something to take away.
Lockdownseperation · 07/08/2020 16:36

I’ve worn one 3 times.

  1. buying fence paint I couldn’t get online
  2. buying ice lollies at National trust shop
  3. taking DD2 to get her immunisations
toohot200 · 07/08/2020 16:36

A lot of people I work with have similar lifestyles (online shopping and spend the rest of the time outdoors or home) and I did wonder if that had some thing to do with the low numbers of cases in Devon / Cornwall.

OP posts:
AliceinBunnyland · 07/08/2020 16:36

Same as you OP. I have worn one to go to the pet shop and that's it.

I do my food shopping and all other shopping online and I work from home.

I haven't been to any pubs or restaurants either.

Zoomintheroom · 07/08/2020 16:37

I've only worn one once and that was at a garden centre before it was compulsory to wear them. I don't go anywhere that requires masks.

BlackberrySky · 07/08/2020 16:43

I do whatever activities I want that are currently permitted and put a mask on as required. I would not be put off doing something because of the requirement for masks, ditto my children. But if I had to wear one at work, I am sure I would want a break from it in my free time so might choose differently.

Springersrock · 07/08/2020 16:45

Same here

I hate masks, I’m massively claustrophobic and they make me really panic so I’d decided I’d only do necessary shopping in actual shops and do everything else online

Then realised I kind of did that anyway 😂

I’ve sat in a beer garden twice (didn’t need one anyway) and the odd pop in the shop for essentials.

I haven’t been anywhere else that I’d need one without really trying to avoid it

countrygirl99 · 07/08/2020 16:48

Supermarket once a week and a couple of emergency visits to the dentist. Obviously I don't do the latter every week so that's it, once a week. Everything else can be bought online.

Oh yes. Wearing one for 35 hours a week is quite enough - I want to breathe fresh air when I'm not at work! I'm not changing anything though. I just don't do any of the things that require masks. I wondered if it was because of where we live or maybe because ds is autistic and that has changed our behaviour patterns but actually sounds like quite a few people are similar.

I am no longer doing top up food shops over the home delivery because of masks. I have moved all the clothes shopping to online. Just cancelled part of our uk holiday that involved museums due to the extended mask rules coming into force tomorrow. No takeaways anymore either.

I am only going to places that require masks when there is no alternative e.g. post office, pharmacy.

I am dining inside restaurants and both DH and I have said if they bring in additional masks rules for them, like some countries have done where you have to put them on whilst waiting for food etc then we will stop that as well.

ButterMeCrumpets · 07/08/2020 16:58

So I guess I am different to you OP in that I have changed my behaviour of spending time and money on things I used to enjoy because I won't enjoy it if I have to mask up.

Lweji · 07/08/2020 16:59

I have to wear one at work (not medical).

Otherwise, I'm going where I want and just carry a mask with me. Trying to live life as much as normal as possible otherwise.

Tabletime · 07/08/2020 17:03

Some places offering both eat in and take away choices are expecting anyone entering the premises to wear a mask as you would in another enclosed space. The relaxation is that you may remove the mask, when seated and to consume food.

Obviously this is a tighter restriction than specified in law, but generally wearing a mask and taking off with good reason seems a simpler rule, rather than all the different contexts and considerations.

We only dine at restaurant only places but yes if that was a requirement for all then we wouldn't bother and save our money.
ISaySteadyOn · 07/08/2020 17:07

OP, you're not alone.

@ButterMeCrumpets, I actually have a mask exemption due to both autism and a heart condition. I even have a lanyard but I am still with you.

I don't wish to explain my life history to strangers and the anxiety over being challenged by mask vigilantes means I will avoid shopping if possible.
