Does anyone else not really go anywhere that needs masks??

I was just reading a different thread and someone said they had taken their mask on/off 15 times a day and it made me realise maybe I'm in the minority?!

I can't remember the last time I put on one away from work (full time NHS so always on there). I don't go to shops, only shop online. I don't go to bars / restaurants / indoor entertainment / indoor services etc. Do pay at pump. Never use public transport etc

We live in the south west in a coastal area near the moors and spend all our time avoiding the hoards as DS is autistic and needs quiet. We go to the beach, forest, moors, sea swimming, national trust and that's about it....otherwise we're at home. I wouldn't go anywhere that needed masks with ds as he can't cope with a mask and I know there's judgement when not wearing one.

Anyone else?

I probably average 3-5 a week between weekly shop, any indoor appointments like dentist, picking up a takeaway, public toilets in the park, church, motorway services, maybe an attraction on a day out. I occasionally have to go into school or drop something into the office and would expect to wear a mask there in the autumn.

Springersrock · 07/08/2020 17:08

I haven’t really changed anything either and I’m still going to all the places I want to. Just never realised how outdoorsy we were I guess

One thing I have stopped is going to the co-op for breakfast and lunch every morning and take stuff from home - which isn’t a bad thing

iVampire · 07/08/2020 17:11

Newly de-shielded, but I wear a mask for hospital and clinic visits.

Other than that, I haven’t been indoors anywhere other than my own home, or my (also shielded) mother’s home since March

I do not wear a mask for outdoors exercise/recreation

DontBeShelfish · 07/08/2020 17:13

I wear one when I'm going into a shop. I try and pack two or three shops into one trip and then I won't take the mask off in between. But that's once or twice a week, at the most. If I'm outdoors I don't wear one.

happymummy12345 · 07/08/2020 17:13

My husband usually does the big shop and goes to get essentials (bread milk that sort of thing) from the local shop. He either goes on his way home from work as he is passing anyway, and he goes on his bike so it's much quicker for him to go alone. So I rarely need to go to a shop.
I don't need one to take or pick up ds from nursery. The only place I go where I have to wear one is when I get my nails done. So far I've worn one to both my nail appointments, i haven't needed to go anywhere else where I'd need one

toohot200 · 07/08/2020 17:18

@ButterMeCrumpets

So I guess I am different to you OP in that I have changed my behaviour of spending time and money on things I used to enjoy because I won't enjoy it if I have to mask up.
I think that's fair enough really!

The only time I go out is to walk the dogs or very occasionally to do a quick run to the local corner shops if we have run out of milk. I do wear a mask for the shop but it is literally five minutes in and out.

Otherwise everything is online now and staying that way. I was never a shopper for entertainment so this is not a huge change although I used to enjoy a coffee and slice of cake from my local cafe (still closed). I WFH anyway.

I do order takeaway from a local restaurant once a week, but I can't imagine eating in a restaurant or going to a theatre or cinema any time soon.

40somethingJBJ · 07/08/2020 17:20

I’ve worn mine for a doctors appointment, a couple of blood tests, to take clothes to my dad when he was in hospital and once to pay for fuel when pay at pump wasn’t working. I’m shopping online and avoiding most places where I can.

Yes, that's it. I never really realised that we live quite outdoorsy and quiet. I don't feel particularly outdoorsy and I'm certainly not fit or anything!

I go where I want and if the rules say I should wear a mask, I wear one.

whatisforteamum · 07/08/2020 17:42

I could be mask exempt as I have asthma and panic disorder that I was overcoming gradually.I have however worn a mask at the garden centre and in a couple of shops returning online items.I wore a particularly thick one yesterday and got so hot I think it will put me off browsing for clothes.I am dubious of not wearing one as I don't want.filthy looks when going out is a massive deal to me on the first place.
There should have been a badge made really.I may get a lanyard.

Orchidsindoors · 07/08/2020 19:31

You dont need one in Wales, unless on public transport. So if you drive, you dont need one.

DipSwimSwoosh · 07/08/2020 19:51

I am claustrophobic and have avoided shops since masks became obligatory. I will have to wear one at the doctor's next week and I'm dreading it.

byvirtue · 07/08/2020 19:59

I despise wearing a mask so I'm actively avoiding every situation where mask wearing is required.

Thankfully pubs and restaurants are open so at least a little bit of normality but I do feel excluded from general day to day life and we are spending much less than before manadatory mask wearing was introduced.

AnnaMariaDreams · 07/08/2020 20:21

I have and wear one but try to avoid going places where they are needed because it isn’t fun. I won’t be going supermarket shopping or shopping for fun- clothes/ toys etc until it’s no longer necessary. I’ll wear one for a quick pop into a shop for a few things I need but shop online where possible.
I won’t be choosing to go to museums etc as much but may occasionally. For example NT places - need one for 10 minutes in the visitor centre- fine. Art gallery or inside museum- no.
DS is 8 so exempt fortunately. He doesn’t like it so I don’t make him wear it as it isn’t obligatory.

Wishfulthinking1977 · 07/08/2020 20:30

I've got an exemption card on a lanyard, but I only feel confident going into my local shops wearing it as they know me and I don't feel judged! Avoiding all other places, online shopping or click and collect, no pleasure shopping and unfortunately we only have limited choice for online supermarkets and the slots book up weeks in advance now! X

Helpel · 07/08/2020 20:47

Yep only going to essential shops now you have to wear a mask. Had just got back into leisure shopping I.e. a browse around a retail park/mall, in and out a couple of shops, a coffee outside the shops. Now you have to wear a mask there is literally no enjoyment in leisure shopping or browsing. Therefore back to supermarkets and like others, only a top up shop if desperate. Masks are beyond shit and I don't care how unwoke that makes me.

Cactus99 · 07/08/2020 20:54

DS just back from Germany (Bavaria), where everyone was wearing one as required, no exceptions. Even when eating out, just masks off for eating then back on again.

countrygirl99 · 07/08/2020 20:58

@Cactus99 this thread isn't about people not wearing masks. It's about people not going places where they need masks. In Bavaria you wouldn't have noticed the people who decided not to go out so it's not really relevant.

Cactus99 · 07/08/2020 21:05

Just following a train of thought about the difference between Germany and UK in rule-following. But there you are.

Am I allowed to say that I go where I want to, and I wear a mask without complaint?

purpleme12 · 07/08/2020 21:12

So lots of people are going less places and spending less at the usual places cos of masks. (Myself included)
So it won't be a good thing for all the high street shops ☹️ which I did want to support actually cos I would rather go in person for things than the internet

Lockdownseperation · 07/08/2020 21:15

Our local high street of independent shops is apparently busy than normal. I’m guessing it’s people working from home.

countrygirl99 · 07/08/2020 21:17

@Cactus99 yes but your point about Bavaria was irrelevant. If 99.9% of Bavaria ns decided to stay home rather than wear masks you would still see the same but the impact would be completely different.
Wear I am 99.9 % of people out shopping are wearing masks but apparently my area is a cause for concern and could face a further lockdown so not convince it works anyway. But it ticks a compliance box and that keeps some people happy.

MinnieMousse · 07/08/2020 21:27

I have been doing the things I normally do and wearing a mask when needed but like you I don't generally visit that many places where they are needed. I mainly shop online and don't need to use public transport. Can't remember the last time I went to anything like a shopping centre as I just buy clothes online.

I wouldn't avoid anywhere that needed a mask. I probably wore one more when I was in France last week than I have done here as we were on holiday so out and about more than usual. Still mainly outdoors but would pop it on frequently to go into the ice cream shop or the bakery or to pay for an activity at a kiosk. I don't go out and about as much at home, I've realised.

Pipandmum · 07/08/2020 21:32

I live in a town and am the sole adult in my household. Today I wore a mask in Boots picking up a prescription. I also wore one in an estate agent discussing the sale of a property. I then wore it in the car picking up someone who works for me - he lives with someone shielding and can't take public transport, he sat in the back with windows open and also wore a mask. I wore one yesterday in the supermarket. I went out to a pub for a birthday lunch, they don't require masks and we sat outside.
For the first couple months of lockdown, other than walking the dogs and occasional trip to the supermarket if there were no delivery slots I stayed at home. But my kids went back to school/college in mid June. We follow the rules but life carries on.
I think the lower numbers where you are may also be a reflection of less densely populated areas.
