Does anyone else not really go anywhere that needs masks??

I was just reading a different thread and someone said they had taken their mask on/off 15 times a day and it made me realise maybe I'm in the minority?!

I can't remember the last time I put on one away from work (full time NHS so always on there). I don't go to shops, only shop online. I don't go to bars / restaurants / indoor entertainment / indoor services etc. Do pay at pump. Never use public transport etc

We live in the south west in a coastal area near the moors and spend all our time avoiding the hoards as DS is autistic and needs quiet. We go to the beach, forest, moors, sea swimming, national trust and that's about it....otherwise we're at home. I wouldn't go anywhere that needed masks with ds as he can't cope with a mask and I know there's judgement when not wearing one.

Anyone else?

I am perfectly happy to wear one when I have to, but as I don't like the feeling, I'd prefer not to be in situations that require them. For me this means masking for the post office and Coop, but am only in each for about 5 minutes twice a week. Wore a mask for a longer shop in M&S yesterday, which was about twenty minutes, and was glad to take it off. Also worn for a smear and a GP appointment.

Winter will present challenges: typical winter weekend usually involves popping to one of the nearby cities with DS, have a bit of a walk, go into a gallery, museum or cathedral for a mooch, buy anything we need, often go for a swim. Mask will be fine for half an hour in a museum, but not really keen on the idea of anything longer. Certainly not cinema, bowling.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 08/08/2020 03:28

I wore one more on holiday as I was out more but now I am back home just once a week really when I go to Waitrose or M&S for a top up shop, everything else bought online.

Mintjulia · 08/08/2020 03:47

I do my food shop once every 10 days so I wear a mask for about 50 mins. But otherwise, no, I haven’t worn one.
I live in a village with no crowds, I run & cycle to exercise, I socialise in friends’ gardens or chat on the phone. We don’t eat out and I order anything else online.

Uhoh2020 · 08/08/2020 05:04

Only for GP appointment, chemists and what is now a trolley dash around Tesco. Other than absolutely necessary I don't go anywhere that requires a mask. At least its keeping more people at home thats one positive you could say.

Underhisi · 08/08/2020 06:17

I wear one once a month to pick up prescriptions. I haven't been in a shop since lockdown. Dh wears one to pop into local shops and to pick up takeaways. Ds who is autistic and wouldn't be able to keep one on, hasn't been anywhere around other people even outdoors apart from school since the start of lockdown.

Just Co-op!

I work in retail but choose not to wear one at work, I do find I am shopping less now (don't buy on line - just do without) yesterday I visited a lovely market town but the thought of going in and out of different shops and putting on and off my mask put me off so I barely looked round and consequently spent no money. I know that attitude will have a serious effect on the High Street, and therefore people's jobs - including my own - although as I live in a tourist destination we are fortunately busy (at the moment).

U8myufo · 08/08/2020 07:39

I have got one but haven't worn it yet. I don't go to shops I shop online and I don't go to pubs or restaurants. I work from home even before Covid so I don't use public transport. I am fully prepared to wear it though if I need to use the bus or train anytime or if I go into a shop (but that's unlikely). My other part time job where I would have had to wear one has bitten the dust now anyway.

Don't you care about your customers or co-workers?

britINscotland · 08/08/2020 09:34

My work have said we will all need to wear one when we return to the office (public sector offices) which I'm not happy about at all (I'm disabled so I have genuine reasons).

I can't see my colleagues being happy about it either although it was the union who pushed for it apparently.

LaserShark · 08/08/2020 09:56

I feel lucky that wearing one doesn’t bother me - I don’t have glasses and don’t suffer from any conditions that would make it uncomfortable and luckily don’t have heating impairments or need to lip read and I really do feel for those who do. But for me, I feel reassured by places where mask compliance is high; I went on holiday and wore a mask for the four hour flight, in hot temperatures abroad, to shops, the entrance to my gym and medical appointments back home and I feel able to do a lot more now as the sanitiser, masks and distancing signs make me feel that everything is being done to reduce transmission and make things as safe as they can be. So whilst masks will restrict some people’s activities, for others it might make them feel confident to do more.

That said, I work from home anyway and we do a lot of outdoor activities plus we have enjoyed trying things like the drive in cinema for something a bit different and so I haven’t got sick of wearing a mask as I do a lot of things where it isn’t required. We have also enjoyed takeaways in our garden more than going out to eat. It will definitely be more of a challenge in the autumn/winter.

Unless you work in a huge offices all with individual rooms, you union is doing well.

Or would you all rather have an outbreak in the office at any time?

People with glasses, get a good mask with a nose clip that fits snugly around the nose.
Also coat your glasses to prevent fogging.

Might just be my area, but i've found that since masks became mandatory many people don't give a shit about social distancing. Just a few weeks ago in the supermarket people would keep their distance, where as now they're reaching over to get items, pushing past people and getting far too close to other shoppers.

TheSunIsStillShining · 08/08/2020 11:02

I said to my husband that I needed shampoo from Bodyshop over the river (20 mins walk, London). His reaction: Oh, you want to travel the world now? :)

I wear a mask to any shop that I go to (2x a week to small local tesco), but i didn't wear it on the street as there was enough space to not go near people. As soon as I approached a more crowded area I put it on.

Smileyoriley · 08/08/2020 15:45

I don’t decide whether or not to go somewhere based on whether or not I need to wear a mask. I carry them with me for when when the situation arises-food shopping, other shopping, have my hair done etc. I haven’t noticed people being less willing to SD since they were made mandatory. Some people are just a bit ignorant but at least their selfishness is now slightly mitigated.

catshavestaff · 08/08/2020 18:35

I‘ve switched to click and collect rather than going to the supermarket to reduce the time in a mask — collection is from customer service desk so still need to wear one briefly. Not normally prone to panic or anxiety but supermarket full of mask wearers and some glove wearers just freaked me out so won’t be going to any other shops. Am rural so plenty of space when out to keep your distance.. Have eaten at local pub in the garden but wouldn’t go if masks were required as it wouldn’t be pleasurable.

tsmainsqueeze · 08/08/2020 19:05

I hate wearing a mask so i am limiting where i visit , i don't have much faith that they are needed and feel quite squeamish about being around people wearing one .
I feel more uncomfortable that there are people walking around in damp ,germ ridden masks that are not being washed and think this could be come a risk as time goes on.
I feel really sorry that business's may suffer further over something that scientists can't agree works /does'nt work.
What was once a nice experience mooching around shops for me is no longer fun , so i will be keeping away for now.

No I've definitely noticed that in my area, too. Plus I live in a country where the 2 metre distancing is still mandatory, and that's not being adhered to by people visiting from our neighbouring country, who've reduced their distance to 1m+.
