Does anyone else not really go anywhere that needs masks??

I was just reading a different thread and someone said they had taken their mask on/off 15 times a day and it made me realise maybe I'm in the minority?!

I can't remember the last time I put on one away from work (full time NHS so always on there). I don't go to shops, only shop online. I don't go to bars / restaurants / indoor entertainment / indoor services etc. Do pay at pump. Never use public transport etc

We live in the south west in a coastal area near the moors and spend all our time avoiding the hoards as DS is autistic and needs quiet. We go to the beach, forest, moors, sea swimming, national trust and that's about it....otherwise we're at home. I wouldn't go anywhere that needed masks with ds as he can't cope with a mask and I know there's judgement when not wearing one.

Anyone else?

Me. Haven't been anywhere which requires them, won't be going anywhere either. I have ptsd from trauma involving suffocation, my attempts to desensentise nearly got me sectioned and so it's just easier to avoid.

Dh does the shopping (in a mask). It's saving us a fortune because if it's not on the list, he doesn't buy it.

ACNH · 07/08/2020 21:39

I haven’t worn one yet - do all my shopping online now work from home. Not planning on going anywhere that needs one anytime soon.

HeIenaDove · 07/08/2020 21:44

Am I allowed to say that I go where I want to, and I wear a mask without complaint

Am i allowed to say that you are policing people for wrongthink? Delly Lomas?

I wear a mask when required but am entitled to not like it. I only do essential shops now. So am only going to Tesco. Though i did nip to Sainsburys today to get some magazines. (i wasnt sure our Tesco would have) So this and food shopping. And i dont fancy walking in 30+ degree heat and then donning a mask. To enable me to do the latter i got an air conditioned cab into town. And will do this whenever there is a heatwave. Supporting our self employed taxi drivers.

I find masks claustrophobic and hot and have a history of facial impetigo which there is a higher risk of in humidity. The last time i was in a high street shop was 22nd July.

Still not been to hairdressers and it turns out my grey that i was so worried about is a black and white ombre.

Before i even knew they were going to make masks mandatory in shops here, i warned family i wont be shopping for Christmas presents this year. For adults or kids. Kids can have money in a card. The run up to Christmas can be stressful and this whole year has felt like that X a million. So im checking out!

I hope Cheltenham and those footie matches etc were worth it. They made their choices. Thems the breaks!!!

Mcmole · 07/08/2020 21:49

I dislike them so haven't been anywhere that requires one. I do all my shopping online and DD and I do lots of things in the open air that don't need one. If I want to visit a museum for instance, wearing a mask would reduce my enjoyment so much that I'd rather just not go. I can't think I'd anything where the fun of the activity would outweigh the unpleasantness of the mask.

AhGoGo · 07/08/2020 21:55

I have to wear one all day at work (hospo) so I've found myself almost subconsciously avoiding doing more things that involve wear a mask. Driving the car rather than public transport and pretty much just shopping online and my husband does the food shop. I don't mind wearing it, and I understand why they've been introduced everywhere. but after 9 hours a day in one, I just want to give my face a break!

Wishfulthinking1977 · 07/08/2020 22:02

Where I live, small coastal town, the beach is packed but all the shops are empty! I work in the tourist trade as does my son, I am mega busy, holiday let cleaning, my son is a cafe and they are so quiet!! The shops are actually having people standing outside trying to get people in!! The nearest city has announced a drop of 24% footfall since masks were made mandatory and our local radio is full of adverts and offers begging people to go and shop! Perhaps it's different in other areas but masks seem to be destroying the little business that were just getting on their feet! Just an observation may not be the same in other areas! X

purpleme12 · 07/08/2020 22:05

I couldn't say if masks have made people shop less here but it wouldn't surprise me

HeIenaDove · 07/08/2020 22:09

Was playing around looking stuff up on my phone in bed early hours this morning. Found an article on Cheshire Live They did a poll and 63% said they were less likely to shop post mask , 37% said they would be more likely to.

GlassOfPimms · 07/08/2020 22:13

Went to a large out of town shopping centre last week. It would normally have been packed in summer hols as was rubbish weather but it was oddly quiet. I do dislike wearing a mask but it was the million confusing social distancing signs and arrows all over the place that really put me off.

People were being constantly (and nicely!) told they were going the wrong way around. I think it's quite disorientating wearing a mask which you need to have on all the time you're in these places and it ends up feeling really stressful!

Dadnotamum72 · 07/08/2020 22:27

The agro of remembering/ having one with me is my biggest issue, otherwise carrying on as normal and wouldn't not go sonewhere. decided on a neck gator rather than a mask to just leave on and pull up when needed, not the best in this heat but the way forward over autumn/ winter

clopper · 07/08/2020 22:37

I went to the cinema earlier this week and really enjoyed it. However won’t go again as now you have to wear a mask so not enjoyable to sit for hours.

Making the wearing of masks mandatory has discouraged me from shopping plus ( especially as my glasses steam up) also the confusing floor arrows and the miserable attitudes of some shop workers ( not all) has put me off.

Teal99 · 07/08/2020 22:42

I wear one a week, in the supermarket. Don't go anywhere else that needs one. I work at home, I have stopped shopping. At weekends go to National Trust land or woods.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 07/08/2020 22:47

I’m in the SW too OP and have worn a mask maybe 3 or 4 times since it was made mandatory in shops etc. I’ve just got used to not going anywhere that needs them and to be honest, having to wear one puts me off going to places I have a choice to go to. My son is autistic too so like you we tend to go to places with as few people as possible.

Teal99 · 07/08/2020 22:54

As I said upthread, I wear one a week, supermarket shop. I could be a contestant on Supermarket Sweep, list in hand, scan and shop, out fast. No browsing, just quick as I can be. I go Sunday morning, normally a busy time. Last few weeks, empty. The car park was empty. I only buy essentials online now as well, mainly household and Kindle books. I am a former spendaholic, this is alien behaviour for me. This time is shit. I hate masks. I don't want to buy anything that reminds me of this time.

purpleme12 · 07/08/2020 23:06

Yes I don't want anything that reminds me of this time either. We went to a theme park where we had to wear masks on the rides. My friend took a picture of us but I just look at it and I hate it. It doesn't bring me joy cos of the masks. I haven't posted it anywhere

Teal99 · 07/08/2020 23:16

What's the point of buying new clothes. All you see is masks. Retail will take many years to recover from this.

purpleme12 · 07/08/2020 23:19

Exactly we need the clothes shops in the high street. And people aren't going to go as much as we need them to.
I don't shop on the internet certainly not for clothes

HeIenaDove · 07/08/2020 23:19

I should imagine sales of make up have gone through the floor too.

Teal99 · 07/08/2020 23:21

Yes, I spent a lot on toiletries and make up before. Haven't spent much since lockdown, started to when they eased lockdown, stopped when masks were mandatory. No point. On the upside, saved shed loads of £

HeIenaDove · 07/08/2020 23:29

I bought some make up and splurged on luxury skincare in Boots back in June , day after my birthday.

I shopped in the shops that were open during lockdown. Bought lots of toiletries , body spray bubble bath etc.

I just cant do this sort of thing in a mask. And the thought of browsing an overheated Card Factory in the run up to Christmas for the titled Christmas cards (Mum and Dad, Special Couple etc) i just cant do it. So im not going to.

ragged · 07/08/2020 23:31

Not as little as PP, but I am wearing masks a lot less than I expected. I sure hope UK doesn't go to a "must wear masks at all times when outdoors" situation. I tried cycling with one on, today. Ok if you're just pootling.

Tomorrow I need to get DS & me hiking boots. We need to visit real shops (wide feet). Plus DS needs a trouser belt & that will be easier to choose in person, too. Plan to take the train. Maybe 2-2.5 hours total face cover wearing tomorrow. Probably 2x as much time as I'd done in preceding 2 weeks.

ragged · 07/08/2020 23:33

... Post Office (I sell stuff for charity) is one of my most regular places for face cover wearing.

Teal99 · 07/08/2020 23:35

If they do say masks outside are mandatory I am not going to. I have no outside space so I would be spending all my time outside masked. I am mask sceptical though, bern done to get us spending.

Lucindainthesky · 07/08/2020 23:40

I haven't needed to wear one yet. Our food shopping is click and collect and haven't been anywhere else that requires one.

HeIenaDove · 07/08/2020 23:41

@Teal99 That would affect people in flats.

This demographic is pissed off enough as it is.
