Second wave of Covid-19

Hi All

I’ve just read this article by the daily mirror that apparently Boris Johnson thinks there could be a second wave of Covid-19 in the U.K. in 2 weeks.

Anyone think this will happen or does anyone think it’s the DM just talking bull sh1t as usual?

The article says ‘he reportedly’ said a 2nd wave could hit here in 2 weeks not that he actually said it.

I’ve read other news reports on this today and the comments are around an increase in Europe. The 2 week idea probably comes from the fact that we were always around 2 weeks behind Spain from the start of the pandemic.

You can’t blame him for being cautious after the backlash the government have faced recently.

I’m just keeping a close eye on infection rates. If they start to increase over the next week that’s a worry.

I hope there isn’t! I’m actually starting to get quite worried now

Well from what I’ve seen when I’ve dared to venture outside and some of the attitudes right here on MN, it’s clear people simply cannot be trusted to social distance so I’m not surprised but very angry.

Can’t see how a second lockdown could or would be enforced. People are happily having half a dozen kids round for sleepovers, doing karaoke in the pub, hooking up with tinder dates etc...

I just wish the vaccine would come out quickly or an extremely effective cure.

CountessFrog · 29/07/2020 00:52

There will be a rise in cases if you end lockdown.

What’s the alternative? Lockdown forever?

5363738383j · 29/07/2020 00:56

The wave word is a bit of a red herring. Cases will increase if we bring back Covid from other countries and spread what we already have around by ending social distancing. This is all happening. So cases will increase unless we have a great test and trace system to squash them. We don't have that. So cases will increase. How much we can limit that outside of lockdown is hard to tell.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 29/07/2020 00:57

Ah Boris the Oracle. He has such a track record of getting it right...

Tadpolesandfroglets · 29/07/2020 01:05

I thought it was widely known there would be a huge possibility of a second wave? Folks have been talking about this for weeks, maybe Old Boris has just got up to speed. 😂

MarcelineMissouri · 29/07/2020 01:06

He’s not saying we’re definitely going to get a second wave in 2 weeks is he!!
He’s saying let’s be careful and not let what’s happening in Spain happen to us.

Pixxie7 · 29/07/2020 01:19

I thought he said a second wave in the EU, I am sure he thinks we are immune.
If not he is being totally irresponsible to keep opening places up.

MintyCedric · 29/07/2020 01:24

He probably thinks that because of Brexit we can't get it...pillock.

Or that by using the phrase 'in Europe' the people of the UK are so thick they don't think he means us.

Figures will go up as lockdown is relaxed...I dont know what stage we need to get to for it to be called a 'wave'.

Spokesman for WHO was very cagey on Newsnight imho.

yeOldeTrout · 29/07/2020 11:55

I don't know what a 2nd wave is. Seriously. There is no definition, except maybe "conditions I don't like".

For people who dislike the control measures then we entered "second wave" back in February & we won't exit until a vaccine is available. Life is one big constant "second wave" already.

frozendaisy · 29/07/2020 12:04

It's reflecting on the figures coming out of various European countries, Italy seems quite stable at the moment and their PM(?) said they think it's partly because they kept schools closed.

It's so difficult to compare as each country has very different demographics.

Time will tell.

Fingers crossed we can keep reducing infection rate and develop a vaccine.

CoffeeandPastries · 29/07/2020 12:34

I thought that infection rates here were going up. They seemed to have plateaued for a few weeks and now it looks as though there's a slight increase.

Wasn't this inevitable, given that lockdown is as good as over? I don't know if that automatically means a second "wave", but I do think they'll be at least ripples.

But then...what do I know? 🤷‍♀️

Uptheclarets · 29/07/2020 12:46

Numbers are bound to go up as people holiday abroad and travel more in this country. We can't be for sure but at least we can be prepared.

In Northern Ireland we have seen a slight increase in positive cases, but we have had a few clusters in some small areas so I think that’s why. I am glad it’s only specific areas this has happened in rather than a general increase in cases across the whole country

Of course numbers are going to go up, but am I the only one who gets pissed off when they say lockdown measures might need to be reinstated? We can’t just keep going in and out of lockdown for all eternity

ohthegoats · 29/07/2020 12:53

How many times during this whole thing do you think Johnson has told the actual truth? Maybe when he said 'lots of people will lose their lives too early' or whatever that speech was. Other than that it's been bullshit to keep 'us' behaving in whatever way they want us to behave. Presumably this is meant to scare people a bit.

CoffeeandPastries · 29/07/2020 13:00

Of course you're not, OP. A lot of people feel the same.

I know BJ is saying that he won't hesitate to "put on the brakes" even to a national degree, I.e another complete lockdown, but I actually don't think the nation would follow another. I really don't.

I had a bit of a wobble last night actually, when it suddenly dawned on me that this little glimmer of light we've only just got back, could soon be taken away again. Not sure my MH could take it again actually and I know I am far from alone.

lifeafter50 · 29/07/2020 13:13

Well back in March when almost everyone I know had the symptoms people weren't being tested so we have no idea how many cases there actually were. Now that people can get tested it will pick up the mild cases do not surprising there are a lot -but it doesn't mean instant death.
It's like before PG tests accurate the day of a missed periond /no one knew how many early miscarriages there were, so you could easily assume from that's that there are more cases of miscarriage now.
Treatment for CV in massive better now for serious cases a rather than the misguided ventilation that killed more people than necessary. So a second wave not likely to be a serious ad the first. Blanket lockdown was not proved to be more effective anyway than sensible distancing and hygiene, so can't imagine they try that again. In Spain and France the lockdowns were much nite draconian than here, and look where that got them.

MorningManiacMusic · 29/07/2020 13:17

I've just this minute watched a news report with Boris saying Europe is entering a second wave and the UK needs to take measures to protect itself.
Don't know when the interview took place (I'm in Italy and it was on our lunchtime news) but he was striding around some sort of bike shop (no mask)
The reporter then pointed out that the UK's figures are still such that it's more likely they are still flattening out the first wave, unlike countries like Spain etc.

Mummypig2020 · 29/07/2020 13:56

Infection rates are going up because more people are being tested, but death rates are still low though. That’s the main thing surely? Maybe the virus is less deadly now..

annabel85 · 29/07/2020 14:00

He thinks a second wave is about to hit yet wants everyone working from home to go back to the office.

Redolent · 29/07/2020 14:06

The death rates take 4-6 weeks to creep up after a rise in cases. Look at the US. Their cases have been rising for almost two months and only now see they starting to rise.

If infections are taking place among young people, it’ll take a while for them to get round to parents, grandparents etc, and for those infections to be reflected in hospitalizations. But get there they will.

MrsWhites · 29/07/2020 14:23

The irony of Boris telling us we need to be careful of following Europe into a second wave...whilst simultaneously beginning an eat out to help out scheme, actively encouraging people back into workplaces and reopening schools with ‘bubbles’ of 300 kids in the next few weeks!

joan04 · 29/07/2020 14:54

I’ve just read this article by the daily mirror

You should have stopped there OP.

The MSM are just dramatising the whole situation and creating fear and anxiety knowing all this clickbait is being shared on sites like Mumsnet and Twitter increasing their advertising revenue.

Last week Boris said he hoped social distancing might be able to end by November. Today he has said this.

Try and use your own judgement by looking at figures on the .gov website and peer reviewed scientific journals. That will give you a better idea of what's going on.
