Second wave of Covid-19

Hi All

I’ve just read this article by the daily mirror that apparently Boris Johnson thinks there could be a second wave of Covid-19 in the U.K. in 2 weeks.

Anyone think this will happen or does anyone think it’s the DM just talking bull sh1t as usual?

@CountessFrog My DC's grandparents shielded when it suited them. They started off so well but were still having garden visitors, going to the garden centre etc.

I think the problem is/was, that even though we've been told to social distance, there was still people meeting up with vulnerable / elderly family members with no social distancing at all.

For me personally, the time being ill if I caught it and then the long term effects of it, is what worries me the most. As a single parent to 3 young children, I can not afford to be in the position of not being able to take care of them for any period of time.

@PatriciaHolm @midgebabe

I see what you're saying!

PatriciaHolm · 03/08/2020 17:39

No, I think the fact the number of cases is up, but the % of positives is flat, is a bad thing

No - it means we are testing more but the prevalence of infection in the community is the same. So the number of cases found is up, but not the % of the community that is infected.

If the % prevalence were going up steadily, that would be concerning. At the moment, it's been bobbling between a seven day average of 0.59% and 0.54% for the last 3 weeks.

Interestingly, the Covid Zoe app seems to have been steady at UK level for about 10 days now after a week or so of going up.

oh sorry crossed messages there! Didn't mean to lecture you ;-)

labyrinthloafer · 03/08/2020 17:40

@SomeWateryTart

If they had a little humility/apology, a la Sweden, I reckon I could give them a second chance

I don't think I'm not objective, I just think objectively they've been really, really bad Grin

Here is a good twitter thread that is (I think!) also saying what Patricia is saying

@labyrinthloafer

It seems to me as if a balance needs to be struck between full lockdown (not good for the ecomony) and a total free for all (a bit like the states). I actually think, for all their faults and they are many, the government is trying to do this.

I think they're just falling between two stools really, they need to decide what the f they are trying to achieve, set out a plan and enact it.

They're just drifting.

We can't afford another lockdown and letting Covid just run rampant would be a disaster as well going through winter (for the economy as well as health). It's obvious we need a balancing act and this is where the government have struggled to have any coherence or consistent message. With schools going back in September while the curve is going up they're in a much harder position.

Trying to get everyone back in offices is a clear error. Yes, get some back, but not where people are productive at home. Busy public transport, offices, schools, pubs, restaurants are all breeding grounds for the virus.

The idea that we'd shut pubs to open the schools while telling people wfh to get back to the office makes no economic sense either.

annabel85 · 03/08/2020 18:04

938 cases today? That is seriously bad. We were down to 300 and something a few weeks ago. I have the same feeling I had in late February when I could see it all coming but no one was doing anything to stop it."

It was inevitable when all the flights opened back up and millions flocked to their foreign holidays (across Europe, not just UK).

Foreign holidays should have been scrapped this year IF we wanted to keep a lid on this thing heading towards autumn and winter. Instead they were encouraged.

labyrinthloafer · 03/08/2020 18:06

If I remember correctly Johnson said he wanted to see 'bustle', excellent notion, thanks for that!

Thanks for this. Good to read different points of view and will be interesting to see if /how analysis changes over the coming weeks.

I don't know if anyone else has notices but Tesco have brough back in limits to no of items in a shopping delivery, and max 3 per customer of some items.

Antibacterial cleaning products are rapidly going out of stock too.

SomeWateryTart · 05/08/2020 11:21

I didn't know the limit at Tescos was newly reintroduced? I thought that had been the case all along... I did an online shop with them recently and they were limiting number of items in your basket as well.

MintyCedric · 05/08/2020 11:27

Maybe I hadn't noticed. It was 80 items at the outset, but the last few shops I've done with them I hadn't noticed any basket limit.

Might have to check back and see if I've imagined it!

SomeWateryTart · 05/08/2020 11:37

It was 95 this time...

MintyCedric · 05/08/2020 11:43

Yes mine was 95 this morning.

Might just be that I've not noticed it.
