No sympathy for people who booked a recent holiday

fairparie · 26/07/2020 07:13

Headlines this morning have got me cross. People who are 'devastated' that their holiday to Spain that they booked last week won't go ahead as they can't quarantine on return and lost all their money.
How stupid to book a holiday when you know it is a risk. We were going to go away and had not booked anything as was leaving it till the last minute. . We still could but I would not expect my work to pay for me in quarantine on top of two weeks away. It is understandable if I had booked before the pandemic but why should a firm pay for quarantine for those who knowingly knew it may be a risk.
I have full sympathy for those that booked before the pandemic and at least they will be insured. But c'mon how can you be upset that you have lost your money for a holiday you booked last week and now can't go on due to quarantine?

But @GilderoyLockdown can you explain what is nasty about this?

Lelophants · 26/07/2020 08:41

It's almost laughable that there is a pandemic and people are still hotrotting around the globe because they want to do an all-inclusive in Spain. 😳 Absolute madness. What I would give to be abroad right now. Clearly, I wont though.

At least assume for the worst so you can be prepared.

Livelovebehappy · 26/07/2020 08:41

Personally I wouldn’t be booking a holiday abroad anytime this year. The risk is still there that countries can go into lockdown again, and having just spent 4 months fighting for a refund for a cancelled holiday, from the airline, and only just getting it back, I won’t risk putting myself through that again.

Lelophants · 26/07/2020 08:42

It's not gloating, more damn frustration that so much of the general public dont seem to use their brains.

Pertella · 26/07/2020 08:42

Wow, some people are actually proud to be nasty and spiteful towards people.

The one thing this pandemic has shown is how many jumped up, sanctimonious, and downright swful people there are on here just itching for the chance to pass judgement.

Leflic · 26/07/2020 08:42

How many will return and not self quarantine? What’s the penalty atm?

sonicbook · 26/07/2020 08:42

@SantaClaritaDiet I'm not following. Did you read what I wrote. That people managed to get home when all this first happened is irrelevant.

Jeremyironsnothing · 26/07/2020 08:43

I agree op.
I'm frustrated at the whole "life is back to normal" attitude. It so patently isn't, and shouldn't be, if we want to avoid a second wave.

sonicbook · 26/07/2020 08:43

@Pertella what's nasty and spiteful? Again, it's frustration and annoyance at stupidity and entitlement

Lelophants · 26/07/2020 08:43

And if there is a second wave in the UK, these same people will be shocked and unprepared. But they never learn!

Bouledeneige · 26/07/2020 08:44

There is still a pandemic in the world and most people know that Spain is still going through a spike of infections. Travelling on planes, through airports and on public transport is risky. The reason why quarantine rules have been imposed is to protect the UK population.

Most people who booked a holiday in the past week or so will have realised they were taking a risk - to their and the UK population's health - when booking. And that quarantine rules could be imposed. They knew it was a risk and knowingly took it. We are all adults and make our own choices and have to take responsibility for them. For some the gamble didn't pay off. Others knew they might have to quarantine and will be fine with it.

I can't quite see why the media are bothering to make a fuss about it. I'm not planning to fly abroad any time soon. There's a pandemic on!

GilderoyLockdown · 26/07/2020 08:44

@sonicbook

But *@GilderoyLockdown* can you explain what is nasty about this?
Scroll up a few posts.
SoupDragon · 26/07/2020 08:44

One might almost think this is either deliberately goady or the OP name changed because they knew they were being nasty.

caringcarer · 26/07/2020 08:45

What worries me is if people go to Spain come back and then just don't quarenteen. I mean what is to stop a person going back to work and sending kids back to school? I know there is a deterrent fine but has anyone been visited at home to check they were in quarenteen after foreign holiday? I have cancelled my hols this year. Now hoping for next year. Maybe we can do painting in house over summer as we were not furloughed.

EvelynBeatrice · 26/07/2020 08:46

“Holidays abroad are non essential trips”
This is true. Having an airline industry, airports, hotels etc is also non essential. Going out to buy chocolate or wine or nice soap, buying new shoes or clothes or paint for the house etc - all these are usually non essential too, as is going outside at all except for very limited reasons. We certainly could minimise risk of infection considerably by avoiding all the foregoing. The consequences would be considerable damage to an already teetering economy. Job losses and misery. And most of all no money to pay for vaccine development and purchase, medical treatment, doctors and nurses. It is all a question of risk assessment and weighing up risk. Many places such as The Balearic Islands have considerably lower levels of infection than even Scotland in the UK. Some people weigh things up and decide that their individual risk is low and that the benefits outweigh the risks. There are no perfect or even good solutions in this situation - it is a case of weighing it up and choosing the least problematic on the basis of risk/ probability.

MushMonster · 26/07/2020 08:46

I have full sympathy for anyone missing on their holidays or finding themselves stranded in the middle of this last minute changes.
I still think that we should all holiday in the country where we live this year. I think travelling was the reason it spreaded to all the globe and that we need to stay put to eliminate this hideous thing once and for all.

Newjez · 26/07/2020 08:46

@AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter

The next person who tells me they need a holiday I’ll happy swing my 7 hours a day PPE at them

Oh FFS. I'm a key worker in healthcare and I NEED a bloody holiday. Ive worked really hard without a break over the last few months and I need a break. Frankly, I dont give a flying fck that this bothers you.

Going anywhere nice?
mccavitythethird · 26/07/2020 08:47

Oh FFS. I'm a key worker in healthcare and I NEED a bloody holiday.

Then have one - in the UK. Either booked away in the UK somewhere or stay at home and spend the extra cash you save on accommodation on some great days out.

Barbie222 · 26/07/2020 08:47

Hmm, there is something smug about your post OP but I can't really sympathise with the devastated holidaymakers either. We all need to step back and ask whether what we want clashes with the greater good at the moment.

sonicbook · 26/07/2020 08:47

@GilderoyLockdown found it!

The OP is venting her frustration at those who have booked a holiday and are now moaning that it's been cancelled. That was always a possibility. The reports on sky and BBC this morning are ridiculous. People saying if they'd known they'd never have booked etc.

The OP is quite clear. I'm sure she has sympathy for the examples you cite but that's not who people are moaning about here.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 26/07/2020 08:48

Going anywhere nice

Nothing booked, but I would like somewhere with a lovely beach.
Just the thought of it makes me want to weep

itsgettingweird · 26/07/2020 08:48

I'm wondering how long it'll be before the OED has the entry

A break - (n)

When a bone gets a crack

A holiday to Spain.

Seriously people. A break does not equate to travelling abroad in the midst of a pandemic. A break is a break away from the stresses of life. So time off work. Days out to quiet spots to relax. Eating out instead of cooking.

jasjas1973 · 26/07/2020 08:49

Govt makes the laws, they said we could all go abroad, even on Friday stating Spain is ok to travel to.
Really can't blame people for acting within the law.

Grant Shapes isn't a member of the public, neither is Micheal Gove both in Spain or about to go...... hang on you re right, some people haven't any brains!

I think its pretty mean to laugh at others misfortune, especially when this will result in very real hardship for many as they lose 2 weeks money or have to carry on into work.

Walkaround · 26/07/2020 08:50

@sonicbook - Yes, I still think your and the OP’s reaction is sanctimonious and bitchy. Someone doing dangerous sports knows they risk paralysis. We feel sorry for them, not just because paralysis is worse than not getting a holiday, but because it’s not what they wanted to get out of the experience. I wouldn’t have booked a holiday in Spain. I don’t do dangerous sports. I feel sorry for people who choose to do these things when they are allowed and who have the experience ruined - not sorry as in, I think they should all get compensation, but sorry as in sympathetic, because it’s shit. To lack sympathy is utterly sanctimonious bitchiness. There are people on Spanish islands with lower infection rates than the UK who will have still to isolate along with people from riskier areas of the mainland; there are people visiting family; there are people on holidays paid for months ago - I feel even more sorry for them than people who booked a week ago, but I feel sorry for all of them for getting caught out.

PeanutButterKid · 26/07/2020 08:50

OP is being mean.
