No sympathy for people who booked a recent holiday

fairparie · 26/07/2020 07:13

Headlines this morning have got me cross. People who are 'devastated' that their holiday to Spain that they booked last week won't go ahead as they can't quarantine on return and lost all their money.
How stupid to book a holiday when you know it is a risk. We were going to go away and had not booked anything as was leaving it till the last minute. . We still could but I would not expect my work to pay for me in quarantine on top of two weeks away. It is understandable if I had booked before the pandemic but why should a firm pay for quarantine for those who knowingly knew it may be a risk.
I have full sympathy for those that booked before the pandemic and at least they will be insured. But c'mon how can you be upset that you have lost your money for a holiday you booked last week and now can't go on due to quarantine?

OP posts:
GilderoyLockdown · 26/07/2020 08:50
@GilderoyLockdown found it!

The OP is venting her frustration at those who have booked a holiday and are now moaning that it's been cancelled. That was always a possibility. The reports on sky and BBC this morning are ridiculous. People saying if they'd known they'd never have booked etc.

The OP is quite clear. I'm sure she has sympathy for the examples you cite but that's not who people are moaning about here.
Why are you sure? She's said absolutely nothing to suggest that.

RaspberryToupee · 26/07/2020 08:50

It’s interesting, 3 months ago everyone who took the refund offered by their travel companies was selfish and were killing the travel industry. Now, people book holidays as restrictions ease, which is much needed help to the travel industry, and they’re selfish for travelling during a global pandemic. Let’s all gloat at their stupidity.

The thing I’m most fed up of about this bloody virus is how sanctimonious everyone is and how people gloat over another’s misfortune.

sonicbook · 26/07/2020 08:50

Nobodies laughing. The government said that rules could change at any time without notice and Boris the great idiot himself even said not to book holidays due to uncertainty.

user1497207191 · 26/07/2020 08:51

Have none of those people who went/should be going to Spain been monitoring the situation there? Surely it couldn't have been that much of a surprise?
It was obvious around 10 days ago that cases were on the rise, in the 2000+ per day by Thurs/Fri this week, I'm surprised it took the UK so long to reinstate quarantine, I fully expected it the early part of the week.

Pertella · 26/07/2020 08:51
@Pertella what's nasty and spiteful? Again, it's frustration and annoyance at stupidity and entitlement
people rushing to gloat at all the families who are now going lose thousands of pounds for holidays booked pre pandemic that they can no longer go on. Its spite pure and simple.

Don't try to hide behind "ooh, its just frustration". Starting a thread to express irritation at someone else being upset is spiteful, nasty and lacking empathy no matter how much you try to wriggle out of it.

sonicbook · 26/07/2020 08:52

@GilderoyLockdown because she repeatedly refers to holiday not very important trip to see loved ones etc.

Quite clear she's talking about those who booked a holiday because that's what she says

dotdashdashdash · 26/07/2020 08:52

At what stage do we accept this and live again

I'd advise not until our NHS is properly funded and has sufficient staff and resources to meet the increased need caused by COVID. Or are you proposing that we just blanket ban health care for covid patients?

Dominicgoings · 26/07/2020 08:52

YANBU OP.
I’m a ‘keyworket in healthcare’ and I wouldn’t even dream of booking a holiday or travelling.
The whole whiny ‘But I neeeeeed my week in Benidorm’ attitude is pathetic.

Spend your money at home, boost your local economy and stop being a nation of pathetic cry babies Angry
We’re in the middle of a fucking worldwide pandemic ffs.

BillBaileysBum · 26/07/2020 08:53

I don’t think international travel should have been reopened as quickly or fully as it was, though I do understand how hard that would have hit the industry.

I don’t really blame people who booked things they were allowed to, though it was always a risk. And it would be gutting to lose out.

But this isn’t the year for international holidays.

sonicbook · 26/07/2020 08:53

@Pertella so we're not allowed to be annoyed at people behaving in a stupid way and then moaning about it as if they are the aggrieved party?

user1497207191 · 26/07/2020 08:54

Oh FFS. I'm a key worker in healthcare and I NEED a bloody holiday.

If we get a second wave of covid due to people taking unnecessary risks, then you will be back to where you were in March and April.

We ALL need to continue taking precautions.

Cartright · 26/07/2020 08:54

@sonicbook

Grant Shapps is beyond stupid. HTH
So you don't have a justification for why you think the general public should be better informed than the person receiving the transport briefings?

Good to know.

sonicbook · 26/07/2020 08:54

Nobody's

TinyMetalBirds · 26/07/2020 08:54

@Whathewhatnow

I love how travel within the uk confers absolutely no risk at all but going abroad is the most selfish thing you can do. Yes yes aircraft but here's hoping those off to Devon and Cornwall have bladders of steel and dont need to stop at service stations .....oh.
I am pretty sure service station toilets are open and have been for a while. Or do you mean you are worried about catching Covid in a toilet? It’s hardly the same as sitting in the same place near a whole lot of other people for hours.
Pertella · 26/07/2020 08:54
@Pertella so we're not allowed to be annoyed at people behaving in a stupid way and then moaning about it as if they are the aggrieved party?
yes, you are allowed.

And others are allowed to point out how spiteful and lacking in empathy it is.

FinallyHere · 26/07/2020 08:54

It's unwarranted air travel that has circulated this virus around the globe.

In my book, it's the combination of air travel combined with the lack of test, track and trace.

Cargo flights that bring medical equipment don't fly without people. It would be sensible to test and quarantine everyone who travels

GilderoyLockdown · 26/07/2020 08:55
@GilderoyLockdown because she repeatedly refers to holiday not very important trip to see loved ones etc.

Quite clear she's talking about those who booked a holiday because that's what she says
I didn't say anything about visiting loved ones?

sonicbook · 26/07/2020 08:56

Grant Shapps and the general public we're both informed with exactly the same earnings. Grant Shapps actually said on a radio programme that booking abroad wasn't advisable and he wouldn't be doing it. Then he did.

Everyone was informed of the risks and those who chose to ignore them were all as equally as silly.

Raimona · 26/07/2020 08:56

My DH has worked right through the pandemic and is taking his holiday at home. He’s going to sunbathe in the garden and spend time with his DC. I have no sympathy for any idiot who was dumb enough to book a trip abroad during a pandemic. Nobody needs a holiday, it’s a modern luxury.

Barrychuckle2 · 26/07/2020 08:56

In fairness some people will be rubbing their hands as they will see this as getting an extra 2 weeks holiday as many employers will just have to pay them for self isolating when they get home.

user1497207191 · 26/07/2020 08:56

people rushing to gloat at all the families who are now going lose thousands of pounds for holidays booked pre pandemic that they can no longer go on. Its spite pure and simple.

The OP is clearly taking about people who booked recently in full knowledge of the covid risks, not those who booked months ago. She mentions "last week" twice in her post.

SpnBaby1967 · 26/07/2020 08:57

You're a nasty human being OP.

I didnt realise that alongside making you unwell, and causing people to sadly die, that coronavirus also removes the empathy and humanity in some people.

Sheesh Hmm

MarshaBradyo · 26/07/2020 08:57

In fairness some people will be rubbing their hands as they will see this as getting an extra 2 weeks holiday as many employers will just have to pay them for self isolating when they get home

If you can’t wfh I’m not sure they will. It may be unpaid leave.

jasjas1973 · 26/07/2020 08:57

The government said that rules could change at any time without notice and Boris the great idiot himself even said not to book holidays due to uncertainty

How many people would know that? & it didn't stop Gove or Shapes.

Just a few weeks ago Hancock said No summer hols abroad this summer..... then restrictions relaxed, they gave the Green light to book 7 people did.
Spain does have 1000s of new infections per day... so does England, i certainly didn't view a rise in cases in NE Spain as a reason to block travel to Spain quite so soon.

AccountAntsy · 26/07/2020 08:57

Of course they can be upset, you have to be spectacularly lacking in empathy to gloat at people’s misfortune at losing money/their holiday.

I’ve had 2.5 days leave since lockdown began and if someone cancelled my (admittedly UK) holiday now then I would be absolutely be upset.

And trying to explain it to disappointed children would be really difficult.
